Veterans, thank you for your service. Regardless of where or how you served, your willingness to stand in defense of the freedoms and values that we hold dear is what has kept those things alive. God bless you and Godspeed.
Everyone carries fire. It is inside of you right now. It may be a spark; it may be embers; or it may be full blown, raging flames.

The Fire You Carry is a podcast about the disciplines, beliefs and habits that we can carry in our lives to make us better, better men, husbands, fathers, workers, friends. It may have been given to you by someone; maybe passed on from fathers, mothers, grandparents, coaches, or friends. The fire may be acquired from tragedy and difficulties in your own life. Or it may be passed on to you from som
eone distant; someone you don't even know; but still they have left a mark. These are the things we talk about on this podcast. We, ourselves, have felt this fire. We continue to strive to become better men, husbands, fathers, friends, and citizens. This podcast is the result of our own journey, of our own discoveries; and it is our hope that you will come along with us and discover your own fire. We are constantly interviewing men we respect; men who have kindled their own fires. They may be successful in the workplace, exemplary as a husband or father, or simply set an example in how they stay fit at any stage of life. We are firemen, and we often focus on issues that we face daily: Trauma and PTSD; from how to stay fit when your life might depend on it; to learning how to be present as a husband and father even when we're gone from home a lot of the time. What we are learning applies to the military, law enforcement, EMS, and even UPS drivers. The principles that make anyone a successful man are universal truths that do not change based on a job description or a phase of life. Come, stoke the fires that you carry and dare to kindle some new ones.
Veterans, thank you for your service. Regardless of where or how you served, your willingness to stand in defense of the freedoms and values that we hold dear is what has kept those things alive. God bless you and Godspeed.
There are a lot of statistics that get sighted when it comes to veteran su***de rates. The number 22 was agreed upon years ago by the powers that be. This number represents the estimated number of veterans who take their own lives every day. While that number is likely higher today it still stands as a recognizable call to action. We are partnering with The Mighty Oaks Foundation through the 22 for 22 challenge to raise money and awareness. Both Nole and Kevin have attended a Mighty Oaks program and found the experience to be life-changing. There are 2 ways you can get involved and support us. The first is to join the challenge as part of our team. In doing so you will choose your own version of the physical challenge that you will commit to for 22 days, starting on October 21st and ending on November 11th, Veterans Day. As you work through your challenge we encourage you to reach out to your friends and family and ask them to support your mission to help financially. The second way you can join is to simply donate to our team. All the money raised will go to continuing the work that Mighty Oaks does to combat veteran su***de. Mighty Oaks is the absolute best at what they do and The Fire You Carry Podcast is proud to stand with them. For more information on Mighty Oaks and this challenge, listen to last week’s episode, #151. Follow the links below to donate and join us in the challenge.
Captain Evan Halquist of L.A.Co.F.D. joins Nole and Kevin on this episode to talk about the upcoming Health Summit event that he has organized and will be speaking at, along with several other amazing guys. This event will be held at the Los Angeles County Fire Museum on October 28th, starting at 0900. It is a free event and is currently open to members of the Los Angeles County Fire Association. Both Nole and Kevin will be there and we would love to see you there too! So make sure you follow the links in the show notes and register today. We also get into Captain Halquist suffering what he was told was a career-ending back injury and how he found the methods and discipline to allow him to continue working at performing at a high level. A link to the episode is in the comments.
In this week's conversation, we are honored to be joined by our good friend Jon Engle of Hold the Line Fly Fishing. Jon is one of the most solid and generous men we know and through his work with Hold the Line, he is helping men and women begin to deal with the trauma that they carry. Jon gets into the science behind why something like fly fishing is such a great tool for dealing with stress, and how shockingly high the su***de rates are in the firefighting community and he shares candidly about a few of his own struggles. Make sure you follow the links in the show notes below to learn more about Jon and Hold the Line, donate, and get signed up for one of his trips! Link in the comments.

In this week's episode, Kevin and Nole are back with an in-person interview with Max Kayes. Max is a licensed marriage and family therapist and life and business coach that both Nole and Kevin have spoken to a lot over the years in their personal lives. We last had Max on two years ago and his episode is in our top ten most popular. His return to the podcast today does not disappoint. We cover so many topics involving mental health, keeping your marriage strong, and balancing your work and life at home. Max even turns the tables on Kevin and Nole and starts asking them questions! You just need to listen to this one. When you're done, share it with someone.
Our brother Rich Zuniga has been battling a crippling G.I. medical problem. He’s been in and out of the hospital for the last few months. Last week, he had to have emergency surgery on his intestines. This has placed him off work as a firefighter for an unforeseeable amount of time. Your support will go directly to Rich and his family to help pay for medical bills and basic necessities. Please donate now - he’s provided us all with joy, laughter, and friendship. It’s our time to help alleviate some stress. Link in the comments.
Next week we have Travis Knabe joining us once again on the show! In order to get the most out of this episode we recommend going back and listening to episode 28 with Travis. If you feel secure and safe in your career this episode is also for you. A link to the episode is in the comments.
On this fine Friday, we recommend listening to our episode with Pastor Jim Stitzinger. While we're not sure what would qualify as a "typical pastor" we do know for sure that Jim is not one of those. In the best ways. He trains jujitsu, does crazy fitness challenges, and has some rock-solid perspectives on life. Go listen now!

I did an episode late last night on our experience in the San Bernardino Mountains during this record-breaking storm. This sweet picture is Heather and the wonderful lady I talked about in the episode after we delivered food for her that was donated by Fullerton Free Church and delivered to us at the bottom of the mountain mom and dad. I've learned some big life lessons as a result of this storm, which is my primary reason for recording this episode.

It feels like all too often we are in a holding pattern in life, just waiting for the next phase to begin. If you are like me, you hate that. Currently, I am in a season of waiting that in some ways has lasted for years now. In this week's episode of The Fire You Carry, Kevin and I talk about some of the ways we've wasted time just waiting for the next thing to happen and how we are trying to make the best of that time now. Link in the comments.
We are part of a non-profit that takes men into the mountains and through an experience that challenges them physically through workouts, mentally through things like ice baths, and spiritually through talks given by myself and the other cadre members. The program our team has built has had a massive positive impact in my life and I cannot wait to see what it does in the lives of the men who come out this year. Do not wait to sign up if you're thinking about it. These dates will fill up!
Tyler Napier and I have known each other since we were teenagers working Wagon Train at Hume Lake together. His episode on The Fire You Carry is out this week and it's well worth your time. He shares a lot about what adopting 3 boys is like when you already have 3 girls. And as an added bonus you get to hear the story of him dealing with the satanic temple as a member of his local school board! (Link in comments)

As we are getting ready to mark the 20th anniversary of the terror attacks on 9/11 we thought it would be timely to sit down with Jason Teter, L.A. City fireman. On the 10th anniversary, Jason rode his bike from Los Angeles to New York to honor those 343 firemen who lost their lives that day. This is part one of two and in it, Jason talks about why he chose to go on this adventure, the planning or lack thereof that lead up to it, and some of the adventures, mishaps, and life-changing events he experienced along the way. We also talk throughout about what 9/11 meant to each of us, how it changed us, and how we feel about it 20 years later. In this episode, we are talking with Nole's good friend Frank. Frank served 10 years in the United States Army as an MP and is now wrapping up the rest of his career in law enforcement. We talk about the effect his job has had on both him and his family. We go into how he deals with post-traumatic stress and sleep deprivation and the unique way he looks at the "bad guys" who he is tasked with taking off the streets. This episode is great, especially if you do not work in law enforcement as it is another window into the life of a man who has dedicated his life to the service of his country and community.
