Record turnout for the Deal Icebreakers Boxing Day Dip 2022

At the 41st annual dip, there was a spectacular number of over 500 dippers, with the potential to raise more than £10,000.

It is estimated that 2000 plus spectators lined the pier and the seafront to watch this unusual event.

Although the sun was out and shining on the day, the air temperature was only 7C and the sea temperature a chilly 6C.

Smugshot was asked to film this by the BBC for inclusion in the news - but like all news stories, you never know what will be in it until it goes to air. So, as a thank you to everyone who took the time to talk to us, we decided to let people see everything we shot.

Thanks to everyone who made this event an outstanding success - the dippers who braved the elements, as well as all those who came along to watch and a special thank you to the support services who came along to make it a safe event.

The event was jointly organised by Deal’s two Rotary Clubs - The Rotary Club of Deal and Deal Rotary Pirates.

SEAS Open Studios is back!
South East Artists (SEAS) are excited to announce that their Open Art Trail is back for 2021. It has been a regular feature for many years organised by dynamic artists featuring new work ranging from ceramics, photography, printmaking, textiles, sculpture, and painting.
Open Studios weekends 19/20 & 26/27 June 2021
It seems like a lifetime ago that we last exhibited due to the pandemic, but it is lovely to see galleries and studios open and all the artists are keen to meet you to discuss their new work.
Based in St Margaret’s Bay, River, Walmer and Deal, artists open their studios to the public with group shows at the Angling Club and the Landmark Centre in Deal.

There are a total of 35 artists taking part over two consecutive weekends: 19/20 & 26/27 June 2021

For nearly 20 years SEAS has organised a dynamic, stimulating and diverse Open Studios/Art Trail event featuring new work by professional and amateur artists in conjunction with other creative events such as the Deal Festival of Music and Arts https://dealmusicandarts.com and the National Gardens Scheme https://ngs.org.uk

The Open Studio trail has become a successful event for both the community and the artists that take part. The art trail widens this year, and you must visit Amanda Thompson in River and David Souter and Maggie Baur in St Margaret’s Bay. Both beautiful areas to visit with some great scenery and their work is even more stunning.

Artists are exhibiting in mini group shows with Chris Birbeck, Caroline Raffan, Helen Komatsu and Kate Baker at 17 Manor Road, Deal CT14 9BT. Their work ranges from textiles, glass fusion, and mosaic. Patricia Barry is exhibiting from her home at Lodge 8, The Chequers, Golf Road CT14 6RG, which is along the Ancient Highway. Just follow signs for the Chequers Kitchen. Her artist friends Mollie Winters and Penny Berkeley will also be showing their work of textiles, needlework, painting, and printmaking.
You can also visit Kaye Walls and Sandra Tracey at 3 Old Gaol, North Barracks, Walmer CT14 7UN. View their indoor and outdoor mosaic, recycled art, and ceramics.
With other artists exhibiting from their studios in Deal and the larger venues at the Landmark Centre and the Angling Club it is a true Art Trail. We look forward to seeing you and to enjoy a great summer.

How to safely view a property during lockdown…
Many people are understandably nervous of visiting houses at present, but still want to move or buy their first home. Here is a video we produced for a local estate agent to show a house for sale in Dover. Contact us at Smugshot for a video of your property, hotel or B&B.

A shining light on Walmer Green
You won’t fail to see the beautifully decorated Sea Cafe On The Green as you drive through Walmer. We just happened to be passing on our way to another job when the decorations caught our eye and we decided to stop and shoot it.

How do you get a tree to look that great and that bright? Well there are 4000 lights on the tree which make it a glowing beacon in the night landscape.

Well done to the owners of the Sea Cafe For making the extra effort during this unusual and difficult Christmas. It brings a little bit of hope and a smile to your face as you drive past or collect your takeaway from them.

Deal Town Xmas Lights Switch On 2020

It wasn’t certain this year we would actually have any Christmas lights in Deal. But the Deal and Walmer Chamber of Trade got together and decided it really must go ahead. But it had to be safe in line with the Covid restrictions.

It’s not just a case of putting the lights up But there is a lot of preparation that takes place beforehand and involves lots of volunteers including members of the Deal Rowing Club.

As well as the overhead lights that hang down the length of the High Street and beyond there are also over 120 Christmas trees that need to be dressed with wires connected and placed in the High Street.

This year the following local businesses and organisations have been involved in sponsoring or helping this annual event to take place. I don’t think Christmas in Deal would feel the same without them:

Deal & Walmer Chamber of Trade
Deal Radio
Castles Removals
Tower Design & Print
Catt Aerials
Kent Aerials
The History Project
Deal Rowing Club
Deal Town Council

What really happens in Santa's workshop?

Members of the Deal and Walmer Chamber of Trade and helpers from Deal Rowing Club spent the best part of their Saturday sorting, organising, trimming, tidying and adding lighting to over 120 Christmas trees.

The trees, which are placed above the businesses along the length of the High Street, form part of the display that’s been a tradition in Deal for years.

The team worked very hard to ensure they could be mounted and displayed in time for the Christmas Lights Switch On which takes place on 27th November. This year it’s a virtual event so people are encouraged not to gather in the street but to watch Live at www.dwchamber.co.uk or Listen live at www.dealradio.co.uk from 7pm.
