This photograph depicts the magnificent Rumi Darwaza in Lucknow, India, between the 1860s and the 1870s. The photographer behind this stunning shot is unknown, but their ability for capturing architectural beauty is evident. The Rumi Darwaza stands as a tribute to India's rich history and culture. With its complex decorations and grandeur, this beautiful archway transports us back to the 18th and 19th centuries when it was created. Its sophisticated design incorporates characteristics of both Turkish and Mughal architecture. We are transported to another period when we look at this snapshot. We can practically envision ourselves standing at the entry to this mediaeval gate, awestruck by its magnitude and artistry. It serves as a portal not just to Lucknow, but also to Hindoostan's vivid legacy. This work of art has been maintained by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, allowing us to appreciate the beauty shot by an anonymous photographer many years ago. They have immortalised this renowned landmark for future generations through their lens. Let us treasure these glimpses into our past that remind us of our common humanity across cultures and continents.

Al-Biruni: The forgotten genius who measured the Earth

Al-Biruni (about 1,000 years ago) measured📏📐 the circumference of the Earth🌍 with an accuracy of 99.7% compared to today’s accepted value.

Al-Biruni was a Persian polymath who lived from 973 to 1048. He was a scholar of many fields, including astronomy, mathematics, geography, physics, and history.

In 1030, al-Biruni used trigonometry to measure the circumference of the Earth. His estimate was 6339.6 kilometers, which is within 0.3% of the modern accepted value of 6378.1 kilometers.

Al-Biruni's method was based on the principle that the Earth's curvature causes the horizon to appear lower from a mountaintop than it does from sea level. He measured the angle between the horizon and a plumb line at two different locations, and used this information to calculate the Earth's radius.

Al-Biruni's measurement of the Earth's circumference was one of the most accurate of its time. It was not surpassed until the 17th century, when the French mathematician and astronomer Jean Picard used a more precise method to measure the Earth's circumference.

In 875 CE, at the age of 65, 'Abbās ibn Firnās tried to fly. Using a hang-glider made of feathers and wood that he built after hours of observing birds in flight, he leapt off the roof of the Rusāfa palace in Cordoba. By all accounts, he flew for several minutes, gliding on the air currents like a raptor!

He is known as "the first man to ever fly", but other than that, he also designed a water clock. He devised means of manufacturing glass, and he developed a chain of rings that could be used to display the motions of the planets and stars. He also devoloped a process for cutting rock crystal. Thereafter, Spain no longer needed to export quarts to Egypt, but could finish it at home.

'Abbās Ibn Firnās was an Andalusi polymath, an inventor, astronomer, physician, chemist, engineer and an Arabic-language poet. You probably may have heard about the Wright brothers inventing the first motorized flying plane but truth is that centuries before them, this Muslim individual man invented it.
