More shops: especially increase in bakers, supermarkets and liquor stores

A new bakery that opens in a building that previously housed a bookshop; in short, this is the trend in the shopping streets. Figures from Statistics Netherlands show that the number of stores has increased in the past year for the first time since 2010. But that does not apply to all types of stores.

In particular, the number of shops selling food products rose. For example, on 1 January this year there were almost 5 percent more bakers and pastry chefs than a year earlier. The number of supermarkets, liquor stores, fishmongers and greengrocers also increased.

Bookstores were hit hard. Nearly one in twelve bookstores closed their doors. A larger decrease than in the three previous years combined. A relatively large number of shoe stores and stationery stores also closed.

Clothing stores are still by far the largest group of stores, despite a slight decline. More than 13,000 of the nearly 84,000 stores in the Netherlands sell clothing.

Groningen only shrinking province
Vlieland gained relatively the most shops in 2021. The shopkeeper population of the island municipality increased by 18 percent. Of the large municipalities, especially in Haarlemmermeer (+4.3 percent) and Nijmegen (+2.5 percent) the shopping street became more crowded.

Oostzaan (-9.4 percent) and Lopik (-8.8 percent) experienced the largest decrease. Groningen was the only province where the total number of stores decreased slightly. The store stock expanded most in South Holland and Overijssel.

Despite the slight national increase, there are still 13,000 fewer shops than in 2010, the high point in the shopping street.

Minister Van der Wal: we are going to drive 100 kilometers per hour for a very long time

In the Netherlands, we will continue to drive at a maximum of 100 kilometers per hour during the day, says Minister Van der Wal for Nature and Nitrogen. The cabinet does not intend to change this now that a judge in Haarlem ruled last Friday that the reduction of the maximum speed on the highway from 130 to 100 kilometers per hour can no longer be used to be able to emit more nitrogen elsewhere.

According to Van der Wal, it remains 'desperately necessary' for nature to keep the speed at 100 during the day. 'We no longer use it legally, but it does a lot for nature.'

When it was announced in November 2019, Rutte called the measure a real 'rotten measure' that he was 'really disappointed with'. But the cabinet was forced to introduce the measure to, among other things, keep housing construction going. The speed measure created so-called 'nitrogen space' and governments have so far been able to give the green light for around 33,000 homes.

However, due to the judge's ruling last week, this nitrogen space is no longer sufficient. This has made the future of permits for tens of thousands of homes uncertain, and the enormous task for the cabinet of how to solve the housing shortage has become even more complicated.

'All electric driving'
Earlier this month, Van der Wal expressed all her doubts about the legal sustainability of the nitrogen gains due to less speeding. This profit proved difficult to determine, because the number of cars on the road is not always the same.

In addition, not all nitrogen-sensitive Natura 2000 areas were found to benefit from the measure. Because motorists sometimes take other roads, which run closer to vulnerable areas, the nitrogen precipitation on some of those nature reserves actually increases.

Still, Van der Wal thinks that the lower speed in general 'does something for nature'. Reducing the maximum speed to 100 kilometers per hour at night is not necessary, according to her, but during the day back to 130 kilometers per hour is 'really not an option for a very long time'. 'We should substantiate that and we really can't.'

According to her, the cabinet is working hard on solutions to the complicated nitrogen crisis. It may take years before we can really do everything again, according to the nature minister. And the speed up again? If we all drive electrically, that might be possible again, thinks Van der Wal.

PVV leader Wilders back on Twitter, platform makes apologies

After a few days of suspension, PVV leader Wilders can tweet again. He himself made this known via his Twitter account. A screenshot shows that the company acknowledges that a mistake has been made.

Wilders was suspended because, according to the social media platform, he had violated the rules for hateful behaviour. According to Wilders, this was due to a tweet in which he writes about 'the violence of the intolerant ideology Islam' and death threats from residents of Pakistan. He also calls the prophet Muhammad a 'false prophet'. It was a message in English that he addressed to the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Twitter says there is no violation. The company apologizes to the politician. The NOS has asked Twitter questions about the suspension on several occasions in recent days. The company now only confirms in a statement that a mistake has been made and does not want to comment further on the considerations that led to this.
