Thanksgiving Turkey is ready. 🦃
-
WARNING: sensitive content ahead. 🚨
-
My husband and father have always processed our thanksgiving turkey from a friends farm so we weren’t new to the end process but raising them in your own backyard is a little different and this was our first year doing this.
-
So here’s 3 of my thoughts on the experience.

- Turkeys are actually sweet birds or maybe we got lucky. But they are like giant chickens but easier to catch and pet. They also make some of the cutest chirping sounds. ❤️

- They Eat A L O T. I swear I couldn’t feed them enough. As these birds were also a 4-H project we learned the difference between game bird feeds and while we should have been feeding them a “finisher” feed we were providing a “maintenance” feed. There’s really a science to feed management. 🍗

- Don’t feed the birds the day before processing. It makes for a messy process with the crop being full. 🤢
-
Overall I wouldn’t mind having breed/show turkeys and may consider meat ones again but I will take a break for the moment. As you can tell by the chilling out pic at the end. 😅

“Many people spend too much time trying to be the captain of someone else’s boat. Learn to be a lighthouse and the boats will find their way.”

Back from vaca and thought I would share 4 lighthouses along the North Carolina OBX shores I’ve visited in the last 3 years.
-
In order of photos:Hatteras, Bodie, Ocrakoke, & Currituck.
-
While I love to visit them and other historical / Architectual sites I will admit to fellow mamas kids don’t appreciate it as much. 😅 however, I did find a comparison photo from 2020 of myself, son, & oldest to 2023 of myself, middle, & oldest.
-
I hope all of you have enjoyed your vacations this year as summer comes to an end. What are some of your favorite sites to visit?

This is one of the most stressful and chaotic weeks of our lives. It’s also one we look forward too, work towards & enjoy every Summer. ❤️
-
I’ll be posting as much as I can in my stories but I will give a heads up this account may slow for the upcoming week.
-
But continue to stay tuned for when the week ends and normal content will resume.

Until then here is my youngest with our new kitten Odin in the show ring. 🐈

“The garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all it teaches entire trust.”🌱
-
This is honestly prob the first garden that w**ds have not, at this point, taken over. 🙌
-
Because well we have never been the best at w**ding regularly. 😬
-
This year however my husband had an idea. He planted his rows with bigger spaces between them. This allows him to run his tiller & w**d whack in between them to tear up the w**ds. 👊
-
It’s not a perfect solution but it does make a difference in the timeless never ending w**d battle.
-
I thought I would share this tactic just in case this also works for another gardener in the ‘w**d trenches’. 😅

My son asked me why we haven’t named the turkeys yet the other day…🦃
-
Which my response was “well we’re not naming them because we’re going to eat them.”🍗
-
He responded “oh well we need to call em’ something until then. How about John! Can I name one John?”
-
Me- “Sure buddy if you want to call them John that’s fine but we’re still going to eat them.”🤷🏼‍♀️
-
Him- “Well yeah we’re gonna eat them what else would we do with John?”💁‍♂️
-
& now I honestly forget where I was going with this story…either way do any of you that raise animals for meat or production name them? Or does it bother you that you may be eating “John”?
- I will answer as someone who has been around animals that have been raised for their ultimate purpose to provide food for our family my whole life - It has never bothered me. 💁‍♀️ a meat turkey (or this breed a “broad breasted white turkey”) is butchered at 18-20 wks old. This is the purpose for this breed. To grow quickly and provide a food source. We all like thanksgiving dinner? I also know this animal was raised with respect, fed and watered daily and had kind interaction with myself and kids. They have a good life. But leave your comments below on this. 👇 I know I’m opening a can of worms 🪱 but I respect all view points.

"You are a warrior, and also very tired." -
-
Every spring I take a moment and send out a personal PSA…
-
Check for Ticks. 🪲
-
Some of you may know this fact and even know how personal this is to me but if your new here is my story…
-
In Spring of 2019 I was diagonsed with Lyme Disease. I never found a tick on me. I never had the red ring or rash. I actually went 3 months thinking it was my allergies or a viral cold that I just couldn't knock. So I continued on even though my physical health was failing.
-
Until I couldn't.
-
And I mean I could not. I was so sick that when my husband (thanks to the persistence of my mama) finally took me to the hospital It was infecting my internal organs. Which, untreated, lyme's can literally wreak havoc. Once they finally discovered the cause after numerous tests I was treated & recovered for the time. However, since then I have had 4 reoccurrences of “flare ups” or that lymes is stronger at the time. Yes, Lyme's always stays with you and will always show positive in your bloodwork however the counts in my blood work when they check show I have active lymes making me sick.
-
However, doctors don’t like the term “chronic lymes disease.” I am now currently treated for fibromyalgia and auto immune disorders. It’s not an answer, it’s a bandaid. It’s a frustrating battle that many people go through everyday.
-
So I share my story because the more awareness the more chances there may be a change.

& as we begin to spend more time outdoors either gardening, yard work, farm work, animal caretaking, sporting activities, camping, & well everything or anything outside...
-
Please Check for ticks.

The American Chinchilla
-
Raised as a meat and fur breed the American chinchilla standard was created in 1924.
-
The American Chinchilla breed has helped to contribute to the creation of the most rabbit breeds like the silver marten and American rabbit. 🐇
-
As a heritage breed listed on the livestock conservation list they are finally currently in a “watch” status.
-
If you have been following my stories you will see we had our first litter of American Chinchillas born a week and a half ago! ❤️
-
Many heritage breeds are currently endangered and it’s up to us to preserve and protect them from this. This week is to help bring attention to heritage breeds all over. For more information on different breeds visit .

We’ve had a rough spring when it comes to welcoming new babies to our homestead.😔
-
I talked about it on my stories yesterday and I thank everyone for your kind words. ❤️
-
We had planned to add call ducks and mini Rex babies🐇 however of our 7 call duck eggs only 1 survived. 2 others began hatching but were then stuck and even with our intervention they didn’t survive. 😔
-
Our two pregnant does we bred ended up delivering. But then one doe refused to care for her babies. So her babies unfortunately didn’t make it through the night. Our other doe we came to believe she wasn’t pregnant, she never built a nest or changed in any behavior. But she was and she ended up delivering “on the wire” (as they say) overnight and again we were too late by the time we found out and her kits didn’t make it.😢
-
Depressing start to spring. And an unfortunate way to learn lessons. But like many unsuccessful attempts we have learned some hard lessons.
-
We are hoping to have better success with our American Chinchillas in a couple weeks and we have another mini Rex hopefully due the same time as well. 🐇
-
As for ducks I ended up getting 2 new buddies🦆 for our one lone call duckling from our local feed store. It was too sad to see him alone in the brooder.
-
So we are progressing and hoping the end of spring will bring better luck 🍀

Broody Hens…and you thought roosters were only mean ones…😅
-
What is a broody hen? Why do hens go broody? Well read on. ⬇️
-
A broody hen is a hen that is sitting on a nest of eggs or you may hear it called “clutch of eggs” (same thing). Her ultimate goal is to hatch them.🐣
-
There’s no clear reason why or way to tell if your hen will go broody. It’s basically a natural instinct and is a combination of hormones, maturity and again instinct. Some hens do it and others have absolute no interest in it. 🤷🏼‍♀️
-
Some breeds do tend to be more broody over others like Cochins, silkies, Orpingtons, or Brahmas but even that’s not always the case.
-
This is my Betty Jo and she is a bantam black Cochin. Every year she goes broody however she has never been successful in hatching her own clutch. She tends to give up a couple weeks in 🫤.
-
So we hatch with an incubator. 🐣
-
Anyone else have broody mamas?

I can be tough. I can be soft. I can command a room. I can be loud. I can be quiet. I can nurture. I can teach. I can love. I can protect. I can impress and guide others. I can choose to follow. I can change my mind.
-
I can continually learn. I can break boundaries. I can stand up for what I believe in. I can dress myself up or dress myself down. I can be a homemaker. I can have a career. I can be both and find a balance.
-
I can grow another human being, give birth to it and then feed it with nothing but my body. I can then raise that little human I created. i can also raise one I didn’t create. I can be a mother.
-
I have never been told there was something I couldn’t do or somewhere I couldn’t be. Maybe because I wouldn’t have accepted that as an answer. If I wanted something in life there would be work. We earn in life what we out forth the effort for. We are all gifted, our talents all differ, and what we choose to do with them is what makes the difference.
-
Being a woman is a power. And, you and I, CAN do all of things above and so much more.

Happy International Womens Day.❤️

The Bachelors. 🦆
-
Apparently ducks can live quite happily in all drake (or male) flocks known as bachelor flocks. This is as long as there is no females around at all. ❌
-
& these two are proof of this. 💯
-
They look quite happy here but I swear they remind me of grumbling old men whenever I bring them feed and fresh water in the morning. They come waddling near letting out a nonstop quacking chatter until I leave their area. 😳
Bachelor’s only- No girls allowed. 😅

Introducing CKL Rabbitry! 🐇
-
If you haven’t noticed by all the bunnies appearing in my stories and the announcements here and there as well, we are starting a small 4-H operated Rabbitry!
-
We will have purebred Mini Rex, and now Heritage Breed American Chinchilla’s. 🇺🇸
-
Our goal is to raise quality ARBA standard rabbits for pet, show, and brood. As well as educate on rabbits, their care, the benefits of them, homesteading with them, and how to begin showing rabbits. We also hope to expand the Heritage American Chinchilla dual purpose breed in our area. 🐇

You can find out more information and follow along over on Facebook by liking our page at: CKL Rabbitry 👍
