Legendary Surf Spots on the East Coast

Pensacola, Florida

Long stretches of soft sandy beaches with long shallow sandbars make for the perfect learning environment for the beginning surfer, but during Hurricane season in the Gulf of Mexico, the sandbars light up with barreling surf and the local Inlets have long point-like waves that are sheltered from the wind.

Pensacola Pier is the go-to spot with the most consistent surf in the region, where you will find Pensacola royalty, the Spencer family, in the lineup. Surfing started in the 1940s when service members stationed at the local base found the long stretch of beaches with rideable surf. Dale Butt and Rodney Mead, local lifeguards, got things started after watching navy seaman surfing their waves. Along with Tom Grow, they ordered boards in 1959 from Hobie and became the first local crew.

It was not until super legend Yancy Spencer III, ECSHOF Class of 1996, started surfing and raising the competitive bar would Pensacola be legitimized. Spencer ultimately opened his own shop in 1969, Innerlight Surf Shop, which also helped propel Pensacola on to the surfing map. Innerlight is still open for business, owned and operated by the Spencer family.
