The Te Deum was composed for band by François-Joseph Gossec for the Festival of the Federation, Paris, 14 July 1790, and first performed on the Champ de Mars in front of 400,000 people.

Ponchielli served as the conductor of the Cremona Civic Band, for whom he composed more than seventy original works and an equal number of transcriptions.
