‼️ The Truth About Cover Letters
📄 The truth of the antiquated Cover Letter: no one cares. And likely, no one is reading it. Do we have to attach it almost every time? Yes.
🖇️ What you can do about this: Don’t spend too much time on it and keep one template cover letter you can change regularly.
🖇️ The formula is simple: intro paragraph about how the role is a fit for you because the company/team/vision is compatible with your vision Second paragraph why that company/team story is also your story based on your accomplishments (2 examples are sufficient). Last paragraph: please hire me because I’m awesome and thank you for reviewing! ChaptGPT can give you a nice template but make sure you edit so that even the CL reads like you and not a 🤖
How to recover from a not so great performance review
1. Go over your review and the feedback you’ve received. Was there truth to the constructive feedback you received? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Make note of what changes need to be established for you to alter any “negative” feedback that you find to be valid.
2. If you received a “meets” and want a “exceeds” - ask your manager to put a follow up on the calendar to discuss how you can get there before your next review (or sooner).
3. Get accustomed to sharing your wins more often! If you don’t share the good news when it happens, no one will know. Work is not meant to be a thankless job- it’s meant to be thanked with $$$ promotions opportunities etc but regular ol’ humility has no place here! On your 1:1 with your boss, discuss your weekly/monthly wins or progress!
⏰ Paid Time Off in a nutshell: take it!
⏰ Most Americans take off around 17 days a year whereas those with “Unlimited PTO” policies at their company take only 10 days off. Proving that saying you have an “unlimited” amount of PTO doesn’t mean you will actually take off more time.
⏰ Paid time off is a great way to disconnect from work whether you love it, hate it, or a mix of both. Focus on family, friends, hobbies, rest, travel- whatever you want outside of your career. Use the time to prove to your coworkers if nothing else- they will miss you when you’re onto your next adventure! 🤓
🙋♀️ The interview is coming to a close and the recruiter or hiring manager asks you, do you have any questions? The worst thing you can say is “no” - this can imply you aren’t really interested in the role. Here’s what do do instead 👇
🙋♀️ If you can ask a company/team or hiring manager question that is unique and shows your enthusiasm - you will be on the manager’s radar as a top contender. An example would be: “The recent acquisition of X company must be exciting. How has the senior leadership addressed integrating two company cultures and what do you hope to implement for your team?”
🙋♀️ Other options to keep in your back pocket:
- What does success look like in this role?
- Does the company provide opportunities for growth that is encouraged (education funds, internal mobility)?
- What keeps you here (to manager)?
- What is your team philosophy and how do you implement it?
- Do you have any concerns about my qualifications for this role?
