BUILDING THE CHARACTER OF FAITH (PART 1)

Scripture Reading: Proverbs 3:1-6
Wisdom Bestows Well-Being
1 My Son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart,
2 for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity.
3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Intro.
1. Perhaps we take for granted that we know what character is and how to build and maintain it.
2. Most people have some recognition of character.
3. Character of Christians rises above this: (Love enemies, Matt 5:44-45 “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.”; Die for brother, 1 Jn. 3:16 “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.”; Die for Christ, Rev 2:10 “Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.”).
4. Jesus is our character model, 1 Pet 2:21 “To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.” (3:16 ”keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.”); Jn. 13:15 “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”; Lk 6:40 “The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher”.
5. Character: “Inner strength”; that which defines the person. Character is not what one does, but what he is…It is who you are when no one is watching (cf. Joseph, Gen 39:7-10 “and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!” 8But he refused. “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. 9 No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?” 10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.”).

I. CHARACTER: THAT WHICH DEFINES THE PERSON, Prov 3:1-12.
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.
8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
9 Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;
10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
11 My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke,
12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.

A. Character is the Issue of the Heart, Prov 23:7 “for he is the kind of person who is always thinking about the cost. “Eat and drink,” he says to you, but his heart is not with you.”; Matt 12:35 “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.”.
1. Obedience to God is its defining quality, 3:1-2 “1 My Son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, 2 for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity.”
2. Kindness and truth, 3:3-4 “3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.”
3. Faith in God, 3:5-7 “5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.” (Trust, defer to Him, fear God, depart from evil)
4. Honor God, 3:8-10 “8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. 9 Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; 10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.”
5. Accepts divine discipline, 3:11-12 “11 My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, 12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in”.

B. Results of Character: Life and peace, 3:2 “2 for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity.”; favor, good understanding, 3:4 “4 Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.”; direction, 3:6 “6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” ; strength, 3:8 “8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.” ; plenty, 3:10 “10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.” ; God’s love, 3:12 “12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.”

II. CONVERSION: CHANGING CHARACTER, Col 3:5-17
5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all and is in all.
12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the LORD forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

A. A New Relation to Sin, 3:5-11 “5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all and is in all.” ; cf. Rom 6:1-7 “What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increased? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin – 7 because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.”.

-Without this, our character will never please God.

B. A New Heart, 3:12-15 “12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. And be thankful.”
1. Here are the “nuts and bolts” of character.
2. When the heart is unchanged, sin will surely return to it, Matt 12:43-45 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”
a. cf. Saul: Removed witchcraft from Israel, but not from his heart, 1 Sam 28:3-8 (Saul and the Medium at Endor)“Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in his own town of Ramah. Saul had expelled the mediums and spiritists from the land. 4 ThePhilistines assembled and came and set up camp at Shunem, while Saul gathered all Israel and set up camp at Gilboa. 5 When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid; terror filled his heart. 6 He inquired of the LORD, but the LORD did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets. 7 Saul then said to his attendants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her.” “There is one in Endor,” they said. 8 So Saul disguised himself, putting on other clothes, and at night he and two men went to the woman. “Consult a spirit for me,” he said, “and bring up for me the one I name.”.
b. Heart must agree with one’s new relation to sin (established in Christ).

C. A New Message is Accepted, Col 3:16 “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.”. (2 Tim 3:16-17 “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” ; 2 Pet 1:3 “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.”)

D. A New Authority, Col 3:17 “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

-Guiding principle which shapes and molds our character.

E. New Relations with Others, Col 3:18-4:1.
Instructions for Christian Households
18 Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.
20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
21 Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.
22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the LordChrist you are serving. 25 Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for their wrongs, and there is no favoritism.
4:1 Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a Master in heaven.”

III. THINGS THAT DEVELOP CHARACTER (Heb 12:4-11):
God Disciplines His Children
4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5 And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that adresseses you as a father addresses his son? It says, “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”
7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined – and everyone undergoes discipline – then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

A. Difficult Circumstances.
1. Trials of faith, Gen 22:1-2 “Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. 2 Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love – Isaac – and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”
a. The character of Abraham’s faith was put to the test: devotion, allegiance to God above his love for his son (son of promise).
b. God saw and rewarded his faith (character), 22:8-12 “Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together. 9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am, he replied. 12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” (15-19 “The angel od the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time 16 and said, “I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, 18 and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.” 19 Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.”).
c. Tribulation…endurance…approved character, Rom 5:3-4 “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because w know that suffering produces perseverance, 4 perseverance, character, and character, hope.” ; 1 Pet 1:6-7 “In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith – of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire – may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.” God sees and rewards our faith, too.
2. Temptations, 1 Cor 10:12-13 “So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” ; 1 Pet 5:8-9 “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” (When under fire)
a. Character can be strengthened and valuable les¬sons learned, Jas 4:6-8 “But he gives us more grace. That is why Scriptures says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” 7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (grace, subjection, resistance, self-control, etc.).
b. To be tempted is not sin – Character will help us resist its allurements.

B. Successful Circumstances, 2 Chrn 32:31 “But when envoys were sent by the rulers of Babylon to ask him about the miraculous sign that had occurred in the land, God left him to test him and to know everything that was in his heart.”.
1. Hezekiah’s character finally came through, although it was tested during a time of great blessing, 32:24-26 “In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. He prayed to the LORD, who answered him and gave him a miraculous sign. 25 But Hezekiah’s heart was proud and he did not respond to the kindness shown him; therefore the LORD’s wrath was on him and on Judah and Jerusalem. 26 Then Hezekiah repented of the pride of his heart, as did the people of Jerusalem; therefore the LORD’s wrath did not come on them during the days of Hezekiah.”
2. How we deal with material advantages is an occasion for the character of faith to show through (humility, thanksgiving, trust in God, compassion, sharing, etc.), Deut 8:2-3, 11-18 “Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. 3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. 11 Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. 12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 15 He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock. 16 He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you. 17 You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” 18 But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.”

Conclusion

1. Character will cause us to:
a. Thank God for being with us and blessing us both in times of trouble and in times of prosperity.
b. Be patient and wait on the Lord (Jas 1:4 “Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”).
c. Pray and rejoice always (Phil 4:4-7 “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”).
2. For the Christian, character is being conformed to the image of Christ.
3. Let us build the character of faith and please God.

IF ANYONE THINKS...
Scripture Reading: James 1:21-27

Intro.

1. God tests the hearts of men, saving the upright and punishing the wicked, Psa. 7:9-11.
2. Better to test our hearts now and correct them, than to wait until the day when the Lord will expose and judge the counsels of our hearts, 1 Cor. 4:5.
3. Such a personal testing of our hearts means we must honestly consider how and what and why we think, Prov. 23:7.
a. The heart is deceitful above all things, Jer. 17:9-10.
b. The way of man is not in himself, Jer. 10:23; cf. Isa. 55:8-11.
4. Five times the Scriptures calls on us to consider our thinking.

1 Cor. 8:2: And if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know.

· Warning against pride and relying on human knowledge and will, 1 Cor. 8:1, 4, 9.
· Pride is of the world, 1 Jn. 2:16; Lk. 18:14.

1. Pride concerns how we think about ourselves, Rom. 12:3.
2. It is self-importance, cf. Lk. 22:24-27; Jn. 13:3-17.
3. Pride brings shame, Prov. 11:2; strife, Prov. 13:10; and suffering, Prov. 16:18.
4. Humble mind of like Christ is our pattern to follow, Phil. 2:5-8.

1 Cor. 14:37: If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.

· Assessment of spiritual things must be made using the standard of apostolic teaching (divine truth), Acts 2:42; Eph. 3:3-5; 2 Ths. 2:15-17.
· Requires sober thinking, cf. 2 Cor. 10:7-9.

1. Many teachers claim apostolic approval, but false, 1 Jn. 4:1, 6; Rev. 2:2.
2. Any refusal to yield to the apostles’ doctrine (NT) is sin! 2 Ths. 3:4
3. The “spiritual” are governed by the Spirit of God – The word He revealed to the apostles, Rom. 8:5-9. Submit to the Spirit’s will.

Gal. 6:3: For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

· Our willingness to give and receive spiritual help is a mark of humility, Gal. 6:1-2.

1. We all need each other in our lives for help, encouragement, spiritual protection, 1 Cor. 12:20-21.
2. Believing we can “go it alone” is prideful, not humble!

· Humility does not compare itself to others, Gal. 6:4 (1-2).
· Humility bears its own responsibilities, Gal. 6:5.

1. We all have work that only we can do and for which we are accountable, Rom. 14:12; 1 Pet. 4:5.
2. We cannot shun our spiritual/moral responsibilities or put them off on others.

Phil. 3:4: though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so:

· Reliance on fleshly things for spiritual security is futile.

1. Heritage, Phil. 3:5; Matt. 3:7-10.
2. Education/training, Phil. 3:5 (Acts 22:3; Gal. 1:14); Jn. 7:15.
3. Experience, 1 Cor. 3:18-20; Jn. 9:34.

· The humble in heart value Christ more than all fleshly advantages, Phil. 3:7-8.

Jas. 1:26: If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one's religion is useless.

· Faithful, God-fearing Christian conforms his/her life to his/her profession of faith, Jas. 1:22-25.

1. Religious action without the heart is vain, Matt. 6:1, 5, 16.
2. Pride deceives one into thinking he is immune from the sins of hypocrisy and self-righteousness, Lk. 18:11.

Conclusion

1. Humility thinks of others and God instead of justifying self in sin and spiritual neglect, 1 Pet. 5:5-6.
2. Humility casts its cares on the Lord and trusts Him, 1 Pet. 5:7.
3. Does God see humility when He tests our hearts?

FEELINGS AND TRUTH

Scripture Reading: 2 Kings 5:9-14

Intro.

1. Our feelings are an intimate, personal and private part of each person. Humans are creatures of emotion - Distinguishes man from animals (Gen. 1:26).
2. Emotions are not intended to be man's standard or governor of conduct. They are expressions of one's character, not the pattern/standard for it, Prov. 14:12.
3. Tempted to make feelings our guide: Man's way (Jer. 10:23) vs. God's way (Jer. 6:16). Therefore, Prov. 28:26.

I. "IT CAN'T BE WRONG WHEN IT FEELS SO RIGHT!"
(Feelings have become god to many / Popular standard for making important decisions!)

A. Illustrations:
1. Eve as she ate forbidden fruit, Gen. 3:6.
2. Lot's wife as she looked back, Gen. 19:17, 26.
3. Nadab and Abihu offering strange fire, Lev. 10:1-2.
4. Uzzah when he touched ark, 1 Chron. 13:7-10.
5. David when he gazed at and sent for Bathsheba, 2 Sam. 11:2-5.
6. Saul as he persecuted Christians, Jn. 16:2; Acts 26:9-11 (23:1).

B. Problem: Failure to Honor and Obey God's Commands above Human Feelings.
1. Eve (Gen. 3:2-3); Lot's wife (Gen. 19:17); Nadab and Abihu (Lev. 10:1); Uzzah (1 Chrn. 15:13); David, [2 Sam. 12:13 (Exo. 20:14)]; Saul (Acts 9:4-5).
2. God's standard is Truth, Jn. 8:31-32; Col. 3:17; Jas. 1:25.

II. THE FUTILITY OF USING FEELINGS AS OUR STANDARD FOR WHAT IS RIGHT.

A. Human Approach to Spiritual Things, 2 Cor. 5:7.
1. Can deceive, Acts 26:9 (1 Tim. 1:13). Can persuade us we are OK when, in fact, we are sinning.
2. Can hinder good, Jas. 1:19-20. Can prevent positive, godly conduct. (Must bring emotions under the control of truth.)

B. Feelings can Serve Vital Roles (once in harmony with truth):
1. Having legitimate emotions: cf. the joy of salvation, Acts 8:39.
2. Motivational effects, Psa. 51:12-13.

C. Feelings are not the Criterion to use when Deciding Whether Something is Right or Wrong. God's word must decide (Jn. 17:17; Acts 17:11).
1. If authorized, then it is right.
2. If not authorized, then it is wrong (sin).

III. APPLYING THE PRINCIPLE.

A. How to be Saved (Mk. 16:15-16; Acts 2:38).
1. "Can't be wrong...feels so right."
2. "Felt saved" but without obeying God's plan.

B. True Worship (Jn. 4:24; Eph. 5:19).
1. "Feels so good to hear the instruments...using God’s gift, etc... it can't be wrong!"
2. Approach God in faith and obey, Heb. 11:4.

C. Work of the Local Church (1 Tim. 3:15).
1. General benevolence? No, Acts 11:28-30.
2. Support human organizations? No, 1 Tim. 5:16 (church sufficient).
3. Social gospel? No, Rom. 14:17 (1 Cor. 11:22).
4. Sponsoring churches? No, 1 Pet. 5:2 (Acts 14:23).
5. "Discipling" movement (hype, pressure)? No, 2 Tim.2:2 (Matt. 28:19-20).

D. Morality (1 Pet. 4:1-2).
1. Promiscuity and lewdness, 1 Pet. 4:3.
2. Dancing, 1 Pet. 4:3.
3. Immodest, indecent clothing, 1 Tim. 2:9-10.
4. Entertainment and recreation, 1 Cor. 15:33.

E. False Doctrines (Gal. 1:6-9; 2:5; 1 Jno. 4:1, 6).

AM I GROWING WEAK OR STRONG?
Scripture Reading: Colossians 1:9-12

Intro.

1. We all know that growth is vital to one’s physical well-being. Good nutrition, exercise and a healthy lifestyle contribute to the body’s growth, wellness and stamina.
2. How is your spiritual growth? The Scriptures teach that we either grow weaker and away from Christ or stronger and closer to Him.
3. Use these check points from God’s word to “examine yourselves, whether you are in the faith” (2 Cor. 13:5). And then, “draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (Jas. 4:8).

I. SPIRITUAL GROWTH DEPENDS ON:
-The same things are needed for our spiritual growth and wellness. Spiritual growth depends upon:
A. Proper Nutrition (partake of Christ, the bread of Life), Jn. 6:35, 48-51, 63, 68; 1 Pet. 2:2.
B. Spiritual Exercise, Heb. 5:13-14; 1 Tim. 4:7-8 (exertion).
C. Disciplined Lifestyle, 1 Cor. 9:24-27 (Heb. 12:1-2).

II. I AM GROWING WEAKER AND AWAY FROM CHRIST IF:
A. My Heart is Dull to God’s Word, Matt. 13:15 (Acts 28:27).
1. When it is a chore to read and hear God’s word.
2. No desire to consult God’s word before making life’s decisions.
B. My Love Grows Cold, Matt. 24:12.
1. Obedience becomes a burdensome ritual, 1 Jn. 5:3.
2. Love for God and man is feigned and forced, Matt. 22:37-39.
3. Prayer becomes an afterthought, Lk. 18:1, 8; 1 Ths. 5:17.
C. I Become Weary of doing Good, Gal. 6:9 (2 Ths. 3:13).
1. No zeal (burning up, eager, enthusiastic) to do good, Tit. 2:14.
2. Forgotten that serving others is serving Lord, Matt. 25:40, 45.
D. I am Increasingly Eager to Satisfy the Flesh, 1 Tim. 5:11.
1. Wanton: “burn fiercely”, sensually stimulated; “their passions draw them away from Christ, 1 Ths. 4:3-5; Rom. 13:13-14.
2. Instead of putting off deceitful lusts, growing corrupt through them, Eph. 4:22.
3. Instead of fleeing and abstaining from fleshly lusts, Curious and satisfy them, 1 Pet. 2:11; 2 Tim. 2:22.

III. I AM GROWING STRONGER AND CLOSER TO CHRIST IF:
A. I Speak and Live the Truth in Love, Eph. 4:13-15 (Matt. 12:34).
1. Careful to speak the truth to gain a soul, not win an argument.
2. The truth of God receives the focus of attention – not self.
3. Speak honestly, truthfully and purely with others, Eph. 4:25, 29.
B. I do my Part as a Member of the Body of Christ, Eph. 4:16.
1. Understand I am part of a whole – Not entirely independent of my brethren, 1 Cor. 12:14-27.
[Each Christian is vital (12:14-19), needed (12:20-22), honorable (12:23-24) and is to have mutual care of others (12:25-27).]
2. By doing my part the whole church is strengthened (Eph. 4:16).
C. My Personal Faith is Growing, 2 Ths. 1:3 (cf. 2 Pet. 1:5-11).
1. Love and patient endurance of the Thessalonians, 1:3-4.
2. Diligent, faithful labor and service, Heb. 6:10-12.
D. I am Growing in the Grace and Knowledge of the Lord, 2 Pet. 3:18
1. Diligent holiness, 2 Pet. 3:14-15.
2. Taught, learning, grounded – using Scriptures properly, 2 Pet. 3:16.
3. Not led away by the error of the wicked, 2 Pet. 3:17.
E. I am Putting Away Sinful Attitudes and Conduct, 1 Pet. 2:1-2.
-Deliberate attention to eliminating sin and developing traits of the “new man” in Christ, Eph. 4:20-24.

Conclusion
1. Spiritual growth is not completed in a day. In a real sense, it never comes to an end, Phil. 3:12-14.
2. If you are growing weaker and farther away from Christ:
a. Know the danger: Sin causes your eternal death (Jas. 1:15-16).
b. Repent and start to grow now.
3. If you are growing stronger and closer to Christ:
a. Qualified (fit, equipped) to be a partaker of “the inheritance of the saints in light” (Col. 1:9-12).
b. Endure to the end (Matt. 10:22).
