‘Tis the season to get spooky!

In “The Paranormal” episode, we delve into the Kootenay’s spirit world. Meet psychic intuitive Norm Pratt, whose unique gift allows him to communicate with missing persons, helping families find closure. Along the way, we go on a ghost walk with Nelson’s Paranormal League.

And we chat Brennan Storr, a writer and podcaster with The Ghost Story Guys Finally Made a Group who lives in Revelstoke and who goes deep into the “Strange Little Places” of the area.

You can listen to the episode wherever you get your podcasts or via the link in our bio.

Sometimes comedy can have a serious side.

For example, comedian and Revelstoke-based Katie Burrell helped out with the province’s “Don’t Love It To Death” campaign in which we see her pooping in a living room that suddenly cuts away to an outdoor trail scene. The message is poignant but also funny to watch.

In our “Kootenay Comedy,” episode, we interview Katie about how she got started in the funny biz and what’s happened in her career since she embraced getting laughs.

In our “Stayin’ Alive,” episode, Jeff Pew speaks with some die-hard Kootenay survival experts including Cranbrook’s Wilf Lloyd, who, ten years ago, survived a harrowing grizzly attack.

He also speaks with Kimberley Search and Rescue’s Sherah Martin-Pretty as well as The History Channel’s “Alone” contestants and bushcraft wizards, Alan Tenta and Greg Ovens. (The one with the baseball hat on backwards.)

Could the humble beaver be the saviour the Columbia Basin needs when it comes to maintaining a healthy freshwater supply? This woman thinks so.

Marcy Mahr is the Kootenay Connect Manager with Kootenay Conservation Program and has a widespread reputation for proactively pulling together partnerships and creating collaborations to protect biodiversity. And she's also a fan of the beaver because of its water-engineering prowess.

We're incredibly saddened to learn the news that musical protegé Nell Smith has died. She was only 17.

We featured the Fernie musician in Season One's "Young Dreamers" episode in which she talks about her experience meeting and then recording with superstar band The Flaming Lips.

Nell was indeed a young dreamer who acted on her aspirations and accomplished more in her 17 years than many do in a lifetime.

She was an inspiration.

To learn more about her incredible accomplishments, read Kootenay Mountain Culture's recent article that includes links to her videos and songs: https://kootenaymountainculture.com/living-bigger-than-the-bubble/

We will miss you, Nell.

Meet the man who competed Alone.

In the History Channel's hit show "Alone," 10 people are left in solitude in the remote wilderness. With no camera crews or producers, they have to survive using only what they can stuff into a backpack. They hunt, build shelters and fend off predators as they face extreme isolation, psychological distress and the terrifying plunge into the unknown.

Canal Flats resident Greg Ovens Alone Season 3 survived without human contact for over seven weeks before hypothermia caught up with him in the remote wilds of Patagonia, Argentina.

Jeff Pew met with Greg to learn some survival tricks and his story is in the latest episode of the podcast called "Staying Alive." You can find it wherever you get your podcasts or at: https://headwaterspodcast.com/episode/episode-30-stayin-alive/

Whether climbing mountains or cross-country skiing well into our eighties or outlasting nine other competitors on the world’s most popular survival show, we do a good job of Stayin’ Alive here in the Basin. Meet modern survivalists who make a living by living outdoors, as well as members of the Kimberley Search and Rescue team. You’ll also hear a harrowing account from a survivor of a grizzly-bear attack in this last episode of season three.

It's a good day to feel the wind in your hair!

The Nelson Chapter of Cycling Without Age Nelson, BC was started in September of 2017 thanks to the hard work of local Wendy Baker-Konkin. Today, the organization whisks elderly patrons around the city for free on trishaws.

To learn more about the organization as well as the world-wide movement that began in Copenhagen in 2012, listen to our "Moving On" episode wherever you get your podcasts or here: https://headwaterspodcast.com/episode/episode-19-moving-on/

💥 Episode Drop 💥

A community-focused music festival, a symphony for a glacier, a small-town spoken word artist: what do they all have in common? An intention to make the world a better place through the power of art. In this episode, we’ll talk to writers, visual artists, storytellers and arts professionals, people whose work and creative practices in the Kootenays are helping to inspire systems to change.

If you've ever been to a backcountry lodge in the Kootenays, you know how invaluable walkie-talkies are to the day-to-day operations.

You also know they're used around the world by millions of people from high-rise construction workers to first responders. But did you know they're taken into outer space and used by astronauts to communicate with one another? And did you know the walkie-talkie was invented right here in the Columbia Basin? 😲

For more about Rossland resident Donald Hings and his telecommunications inventions from the early 1900s, listen to our "To The Trailblazers" episode wherever you get your podcasts or here: https://headwaterspodcast.com/episode/episode-21-to-the-trailblazers/

From lobbing curveballs to swinging pulaskis, Castlegar resident Alli Schroder has been having a profound impact on the country's sport scene and the province's wildfire scene. 🔥

We (barely) managed to catch up with Alli during one of her rare down moments to interview her for our "Young Dreamers Part 2" episode about what it's like to be one of the best female baseball players in the world in between bouts of saving it from burning down.

💥 Episode Drop 💥

In season one of our podcast, we produced a popular episode titled “Young Dreamers” about Basin youth accomplishing extraordinary things. Well, there must be something in the water, because the kids just keep getting after it, and we couldn’t wait to share more of their stories. Meet one of the best female baseball players in the world, 22-year-old Alli Schroder, as well as Keanu Chan, who, at 17 years old, has invented award-winning medical devices—when he's not shredding on the drums.

There are varying opinions on the proposed Zincton ski resort in the Slocan Valley but there's no denying its history.

Zincton was once the most prolific producer of zinc in the Slocan area and mining took place there from the late 1800s to the 1950s .

In our Ghost Town episode we speak with New Denver resident David Harley who is the project lead on the proposed Zinton ski area located near the former mine site.
