•Firstly, research has proven that climate damage caused by organic meat production is just as high as conventionally formed meat and the livestock are often fed grass instead of imported fodder, essentially producing less meat and growing slowly. Since livestock emissions come from methane gas produced by cows and sheep, it means organic livestock spend more time omitting greenhouse gasses before slaughter.

•Secondly, as organic farming does not require the use of chemical fertilisers, it requires more land to produce the same number of commercial crops as compared to its commercial counterpart. This results in deforestation, reduced storage capacity for carbon in soils responsible for holding moisture, plant nutrient and fertility.

• Based on research papers, Robin Zheng has analysed 2 main factors that result from racial stereotyping, contributing to enhanced racial sexual desires.

1. The feeling of overgeneralization experienced by racial fetishization targets are made to feel like they are dispensable and replaceable with other people in that group. For example, saying that Asian people ‘all look the same’ reduces Asian individuals merely to a string of Asian features which can feel discriminatory to individuals of the group.

2. Target groups of these racialised sexual preferences may feel ‘otherized’ when being titled good looking for an asian, emphasizing that the attractiveness of the individual is tied to their specific race. Either way, this makes individuals feel outcasted in relation to the western beauty ideal, an ideal in which there is already immense pressure to conform too.

•That got us thinking, is women’s football more accessible than men’s? Here’s 4 reasons why some think it might just be

Accessible for everyone to watch
o Everyone can watch it for free on bbc1 – unlike men’s football which you often have to pay a subscription to watch.

The players are more accessible to fans
o It also helps that the players are accessible after games; they want to stay and engage with fans and take selfies and pictures… the male players on the other hand don’t tend to stick around

Cheap tickets
o concession tickets for womans football start at £5 going up to £50. Yet, To watch top level men’s football tickets can start at £20 and cost up to £1k, and that’s before you look at those for sale on the black market

Spirit of the game
o Women’s football is played in a less aggressive way meaning less fouls and stoppages in play.

•Firstly, INFLATION...inflation is currently 11.7% higher than last year. This means that a jnr doctor would need a salary increase of 11.7% to be able to afford the same standard of living as last year.

•Secondly, the pay deal. In 2019 jnr doctors were given a pay deal that would see their salary increase by 2% every year until 2023. This means that their current pay deal only gives them a 2% wage increase. Meaning they are really 9% worse off.

•Thirdly, the body responsible for advising the government on pay rises said that as they already had a pay deal in place, they weren’t entitled to the 4.5% wage increase recommended for other dentists and doctors for this year.

•Russia announces “fake news” law - anyone spreading non-approved info about the Russian army on social media can go to jail.

•TikTok bans all new content uploads in Russia, and bans all non-Russian content from showing up (on March 6th).

• However, the ban doesn’t fully go through because Russian users can still post on desktop. Feeds are dominated by Russian state propaganda who are still posting.

•As of March 25th TikTok fully implements the ban so only old content can be seen with no new posting.

•Now everyone’s user feeds are dominated by all the old pro-war propaganda with 93.5% of all war-related content is pro-war, instead of 58% before the ban.

02/08/2022

•In October UK energy prices could rise by 65%, meaning average annual bills would be up to a big ol’ £3,244, and there’s 3 main reasons why.

•First, gas prices have gone up. Even though the UK doesn’t rely on Russian gas that much, global reliance has still driven the prices up for us too.

•Next, in autumn of 2021 more than 20 UK energy retailers (with 4 million customers) went bust because they weren’t prepared for price hikes. Bigger companies absorbed their debts and then customers ended up picking up the tab.

•And lastly, inflation is on the rise and doesn’t show signs of stopping, so everything is getting more expensive. Unfortunately inflation normally means costs rise before wages do, so for most of us everything is going to be more expensive for a while

•Inflation is seen to soar past 29.8% as food prices rise and an energy crisis sees a shortage in fuel with people queuing for days just to fill up a tank.

•Households, businesses and schools have shut as they suffer power cuts and what previously was one of the best universal healthcare systems in South Asia is falling apart with essential medicines being no longer easily accessible or only available through a waitlist.

•The country is currently running out of foreign reserves, essentially defaulting on mountains of debt and analysts are blaming the crisis on years of economic mismanagement as Russia went to war and following the Covid aftershock.

•Currently, Sri Lanka is in negotiation with the IMF, China and India to restructure debt and provide financial support. But this will mean their government, criticized as highly corrupt, will need to seriously change policies.

15/07/2022

The ongoing 2022 Conservative Party leadership election will determine the next leader of the Conservative Party and therefore the next prime minister of the United Kingdom. The election was triggered when Boris Johnson announced on 7 July 2022 that he would resign as party leader. It began on 12 July, and the results are expected by 5 September.

Currently, there are 5 standing candidates running for the election: Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak, Keemi Badenoch, Penny Mordaunt and Tom Tugendhat after Suelle Braverman got knocked out of the Tory Leadership Contest.

They all have individual characteristics in terms of what they bring to the table and they go as follows:

Liz Truss: She was Johnson’s foreign secretary, she initially supported remaining in the EU, she is the longest serving cabinet member and is an extreme libertarian on trade/economics.

Rishi Sunak: He is a tory favourite to win, he helped to bring johnson out of office by resigning early, extremely rich along with his wife whom got in trouble for tax evasion, he is inflation focused and ran a furlough scheme to help out during covid.

Kemi Badenoch: Backed by Michael Gove, she believes that the government needs to concentrate on inflation, she is the former equalities minister, she is critical of rebates and believes in tax cuts instead and she also believes that a clearer economic policy is needed.

Penny Mordaunt: She is the first female defense secretary that believes that the UK needs to fight off the coming recession ASAP, she argues that her opponents are oversimplifying economic issues, she believes that tax cuts are important but they also require to be targeted and is observed most likely to beat Sunak.

Tom Tugendhat: He served in various army roles in Iraq and Afghanistan, he is a strong Isreal supporter, he believes that NHS wait times are unacceptable, he was the only candidate whom did not vote for the NI rate rise, he does not believe in boosterism, just lowering taxes and pro growth regulation and he also does not carry any ministerial experience.

•A Conservative Party MP, Chris Pincher was suspended from the party earlier this week after allegations of groping two men while being drunk at a member’s club in London.

•He previously had patterns of bad behavior like sexual harassment allegations stretching back several years, leaving many to question his given role in the first place ater resigning from a role in 2017 from sexual allegations as well.

•Boris Johnson claims that he wasn’t aware of Pincher’s previous behavior until he had undertaken the role.

•A paradigm shift in investment products has seen cryptocurrency being on the popular rise amongst millennials and gen-zs: Bitcoin, Ethereum and Shiba-Inu to name a few. However, they also incur an insane amount of carbon footprint. For comparison, Bitcoin alone uses more energy than Argentina. Can cryptocurrency can be sustainable to maintain its environmental sustainability effects?

•The main drivers of bitcoin and its environmental harm are the competition of bitcoin mining where large amounts of energy are used to create and regulate bitcoin.

•However, big cryptocurrencies like Solana and Cardano have shifted to “proof of stake”. A technique where miners are chosen at random to verify transactions meaning they don’t need to compete with bigger computers, essentially drawing less energy required for mining. This could possibly be the future of cryptocurrency in the new age.

•As companies move their work pace online, many have found a new norm in working remotely amidst the pandemic. Apart from being isolated in your small city, confined by the 4 walls of your shoe-box apartment, a coveted dream scheme has since been rolled out to fuse both working online and traveling altogether.

•Many destinations such as Bali, Barbados, Bermuda and even Costa Rica (to name a few) are amongst the 46 countries offering “digital nomad visas” to entice foreigners to come work and contribute to their economies to make up for revenue lost due to the pandemic.

•Holders of the digital nomad visa will be allowed to live and work in the associated country for 1 to 2 years and in some countries, the visa may also be extended to up to 5 years if the qualifying criteria is being met.

•With aims of boosting the countries’ agriculture and tourism sector, growing marijuna and consuming it in food and drinks in Thailand is legal since June 9th 2022. Smoking pot however, is likely to still remain against the law.

•Since legalization, shoppers have been seen to queue up at stores selling cannabis-infused food products. Thailand has a tradition of using cannabis to relieve pain and fatigue as medicinal ma*****na was first legalized in 2018.

•However, there is still a limit on the strength of cannabis products being sold. The possession and sale of cannabis extracts with more than 0.2% of its psychoactive ingredient, THC remains illegal.

01/07/2022

•Abortion ban laws in America on June 24 changed the national landscape leaving the question of where abortion is illegal now? The answer may be more complicated than we imagine.

•Currently, abortion is illegal in Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Missouri, and South Dakota with little to no exceptions.

•Some states like Arizona are in legal grey area as a result of pre-roe abortion bans that were enforced, protecting women’s access to abortion after 24 weeks when fetuses are not viable or if the mother’s life is at risk.

•Abortion clinics in Wisconsin are now closed, a six week abortion ban in Ohio are now enforced and in Texas, the pre-roe abortion ban was blocked, making abortion immediately illegal.

•Over the course of the next 30 days, the new ruling will take effect in some states like Wyoming, Mississippi, Idaho, Tennessee and North Dakota.

• As a serious effort to w**d out street clogging tourists and day-trippers that cause strain on the city’s environmental infrastructure with little to offer back to the economy, Venice plans to start charging a fee of 3 to 10 euros for access to the city starting January.

• Final details like fee enforcement and location implementations are still in talks. We will, however, see them at tourist hotspots along the Grand Canal as well as peripheral islands like Lido, Murano and Burano.

• Locals have since shown their concerns for shopkeepers trading within the island, well known for its roots in trading.

• Whether or not this implementation would impact the city positively or not will be determined solely by the spending power of tourists that remain to roam the city after the rule.

• This outcome will strengthen NATO, formally initiated after WW2 to counter Russian expansion in the EU.

• This outcome will observe an improvement in European safety as allied forces are provided to support countries involved during a difficult time.

• However, in exchange, countries have agreed to Turkey’s terms to extradite kurdish militants and lift their restrictions on Turkey's armed exports under the “NATO deal”.

• Fashion. The most accessible forms in expressing our identity, creativity and personality before saying a single word. It is an art that we are all involved in, consciously or not.

• Fashion is coveted by many but does our new garment purchase still hold the same appeal despite knowing its production footprint?

• Today, fashion is the second most polluted industry globally: take producing a single cotton t-shirt for example. 2,700 liters is used aside from harmful pesticides, processing and leather tanning that later contributes to environmental waste.

• To truly indulge in fashion, understanding what and who is behind the brand we support can be helpful. By mindfully consuming, upcycling, purchasing resale and pre-loved clothes and renting them can be beneficial for your bank account, mind and the environment.

• This week the biggest rail strike in 30 years disrupted travel for millions across the UK.

• Train staff are striking to demand more pay, due to a rising cost of living and growing inflation. They are also asking for better working conditions and pensions.

• So far the government has offered a 3% pay increase and Boris Johnson’s response has been to push a new law which would let employers bring in temp staff in order to end a strike.

• This could make tensions between employers and unions even worse, as well as possibly violating the international laws which protect the right to strike.

• Strikes are set to continue until this coming Saturday, but if an agreement isn’t reached there could be more coming up.

• Other industries affected by similar issues, like medics, may be following the lead and start pushing for better conditions too.

• The first deportation flight to Rwanda was stopped last week after the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) stepped in at the last minute.

• Now Boris Johnson is threatening to leave the ECHR to get the deportations across. However, it is unlikely to happen as tension with northern Ireland would surface, violating the Good Friday agreement.

• The original policy plan was to send asylum seekers entering the UK to Rwanda, to be processed and apply for asylum there instead. Rwanda would be paid 120 million pounds a year to process the migrants, and they would not be allowed to return to the UK.

• Johnson and Priti Patel have said it will put off human smugglers and “economic migrants”. As long as the UK stays in the ECHR however, it looks like the plan will be a very costly failure, bad news for Johnson who is suffering politically already.

• This week the EU is expected to start legal action against the UK government, after disagreements over Brexit deals.

• The UK has been trying to go back on the Northern Ireland protocol, a deal to allow NI to stay in the EU's single market to avoid a land border with the Republic of Ireland, potentially re-igniting tension.

• Instead, the UK agreed to a sea border on goods arriving into Northern Ireland. However unionists in Northern Ireland are strongly opposed to this sea border, because they think it further divides the UK.

• This goes against their original agreement with the EU, which is claiming the UK is in violation of international law. The US has also expressed concern.

• Wild animals are moving to new areas, and bringing new diseases and…

• Vice versa people are moving into areas that used to be wild and finding new diseases there too. Plus…

• People are going to be moving more in general as things change, and bringing diseases to each other and as things get hotter…

• Diseases also are able to survive at different temperatures. So the area cholera can survive is going to increase for example, but thankfully some diseases are also gonna die out from heat shifts.

• Albeit having a small domestic market and lack of natural resources, Singapore weathered through financial crises of 1997 and 2008 and today, it is one of the most stable economies globally with no foreign debt, high government revenue and a consistent positive surplus.

• The economy is driven by exports in electronics manufacturing and machinery, financial services, tourism and having the world’s busiest cargo seaport as it did in its humble beginnings.

• Emerging industries that are also contributing largely to Singapore’s economy include medical technology, aerospace engineering, clean energy, healthcare as well as content development.

• In the long-term, the Singapore GDP is projected to trend around 425.00 USD Billion in 2022 and 449.00 USD Billion in 2023 and for 2022, MTI has maintained the GDP growth forecast at 3%-5%.
