Thunderbird (John Proudstar).
The writer has mixed up Thunderbird and Warpath, two different characters.
1984 - First appearance of Thunderbird/Warpath in The New Mutants #16.
Thunderbird, also known as Warpath, made his first appearance in "X-Men" #95 in October 1975. Created by Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum, Thunderbird is the mutant James Proudstar, a member of the Apache tribe with superhuman abilities. Introduced as a new member of the X-Men, Thunderbird's tenure with the team was tragically short-lived. In the same issue as his debut, Thunderbird lost his life during a mission, sacrificing himself to save a fellow teammate. Despite his brief time with the X-Men, Thunderbird's impact on the team and the Marvel Universe has endured, with subsequent stories exploring his legacy and the Proudstar family.
Following his initial appearance, Thunderbird's character has been revisited and expanded upon in various comic storylines. He has been featured in different X-Men series and has become a prominent figure in the mutant superhero landscape. Warpath has showcased his formidable combat skills and enhanced physical abilities, solidifying his place as a resilient and powerful character within the Marvel Comics continuity. Over the years, Thunderbird/Warpath has evolved and become a fan-favorite, contributing to the rich tapestry of mutant stories in the Marvel Universe.

News from 2020: Marvel Comics has decided that maybe, just maybe, a Native American mutant assassin should go by a name other than Scalphunter. But, like the Washington Redskins, they haven't actually come up with one, so are just going with his non-codename, John Greycrow.

Marvel has always been “woke.” For decades, it has included and represented a wide range of races, genders, sexualities and disabilities. Throughout its pages, it has always engaged with current events and tackled politics. While Marvel has grown to include more diversity in their characters and comics over time, Marvel began its reign politically from the very beginning.
