“You Must Know That This Council Belongs to Everyone in KM and Is Not a Political Institution” - UDP Leader Advises Mayor Bensouda and Councillors

Speaking to The Fatu Network at the ongoing Swearing-in ceremony of the re-elected Mayor of the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), Talib Ahmed Bensouda, and councilors at the KMC premises, Ousainou Darboe, the Leader of the main opposition United Democratic Party advised Mayor Bensouda and his councilors to know that KMC is not a political institution and that it belongs to the people of KM.

Darboe, in a joyous mood with other party leaders who endorsed his candidates during the mayoral/chairmanship elections, described the swearing-in ceremony as a special day for the people of Kanifing Municipality and not for UDP.

He called on the elected officials to put aside their political differences and work for the interest of the council.

“They (mayor and councilors) must not be discriminatory. They must know that this institution belongs to everyone in the Kanifing Municipality and is not a political institution,” he advised.

The main opposition leader stated that the council must not be made a party institution as it is meant to serve.

“The council is an institution that is to serve the entire community of the Kanifing Municipality,” he added.

Darboe who is optimistic that Bensouda will deliver the expectations to the electorates said: “Bensouda is very patriotic, his focus is very wide and he doesn’t think party, he is not partisan in his approach.”

Darboe further told The Fatu Network in a joint broadcast with Paradise TV that Mayor Bensouda has zero tolerance for corruption and nepotism, and he fights to make sure that the council operates corrupt-free.

Dr Ismaila Ceesay Of CA Congratulates NPP and Partners

Dr Ismaila Ceesay of citizens Alliance has congratulated the National Peoples Party and it's partners on their strong performance in the councillorship election.

In a tweet post seen on Sunday, the political science lecturer said "The NPP-led coalition should, with great relish, be proud of their victory in the just concluded LG elections by winning 61 out of 120 councils. Effectively, the NPP-led coalition won over 50% of the councils. Congratulations to the newly elected Councillors."

In the just concluded Local government election of councillors, CA has zero candidates to contest for the 2023 LG election.

CA is now one of the coalition partners of NPP

Today was the 65th and final session of the General Council marking a 5 year Tenure for the Years May 2018 to April 2023.

This Multi- Partisan Council with a multi-talented directorate and a brilliant support staff have run the council as democratic, efficient institution that has changed the narrative on what Councils are Capable off.

As the councilors head for elections they bid farewell to the management and staff who exchanged pleasantries and wished them all the best of luck!

Nation building is about representing the diversity of views of the citizenry and finding a middle ground to make it work and this council has been a proof of concept.

We had highs and lows and fought for our people with every thing at our disposal. We won many times and lost sometimes but our resolve to serve is unquestionably more robust than when we came.

As a final decision the council via a transitional resolution vested trust and confidence on me to continue to steer the affairs of the institution until the swearing in of a new body.

It’s been an honour to serve with all of you, and though we have different affiliations, quarreled and got along many times as is the norm with any family, our mutual love shall persevere beyond our tenure in this great place!

This sessions General Council is hereby ADJOURNED! 👨🏾‍⚖️
