Have you ever heard of movies like Gone With the Wind (1939), Rebecca (1940), Casablanca (1942), Cimarron (1931), Double Indemnity (1944), Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), Vertigo (1958), White Christmas (1954), Going My Way (1944), Roman Holiday (1953), Sabrina (1954), Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Spartacus (1960), or The Ten Commandments (1956)? The Westmore Family was behind the makeup looks for these films. Have you ever seen shows like The Munsters (1964-1966), Planet of the Apes (1974), Hart to Hart (1979-1984), or various Star Trek productions? A Westmore helped create some of those looks. Between coining the concept of “face shapes” and creating the makeup look for America’s most iconic fashion doll, the Westmore dynasty has been an integral force in the beauty industry, both in Old Hollywood and beyond.

We had the privilege of sitting down with Christiana Benson, the Westmore family historian and great granddaughter of Ern Westmore, to learn all about the wildly talented four generations of artists. Christiana tells us about how patriarch George Westmore established the first Hollywood hair and makeup department in 1917 and how his descendants made some of the most memorable looks in all of movie history. We are so honored to share their legacy with you!

We head to Paris for an emotional trip of the ages: The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939)! This adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel is considered one of the best retellings of this tale about humanity (and the pain, passion, cruelty, & kindness that comes along with it). Charles Laughton gives a phenomenal performance as Quasimodo, the misunderstood ringer of the bells, and Maureen O’Hara makes her American film debut as the Esmeralda, the kind gypsy girl who wants to help the livelihood of her community. We were blown away at the behind-the-scenes details of this film, including how this screenplay was written as a metaphor for the events leading up to World War II.

We go back in time with Jerry as he reminisces on childhood memories of filming this iconic show. Jerry also gives us the inside scoop on what Alfred Hitchcock was really like while working together in The Trouble with Harry (1955)! From fun adventures at Universal Studios, to memories of fellow actors like Steve McQueen and Hugh Beaumont, to the wild times of filming the legendary soup billboard episode, we cannot stop smiling listening to his stories.

Yesterday we lost one of Old Hollywood’s brightest stars. Jane Powell sang and danced her way into the hearts of all movie-musical lovers. I’ll never forget the first time I watched Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and was in awe of her bringing sweet, yet sassy, Milly Pontipee to life in the Oregon Territory. And watching her “Hit the Deck” with Russ Tamblyn can put a smile on anyone’s face. A true multitalented actress, she graced both the silver screen and the Broadway stage. Her films will always hold a special place in our hearts and we hope to continue celebrating her legacy for generations to come 💛

Not to mention, we get stellar performances by Charles “Buddy” Rogers, Richard Arlen, and “It Girl” of the 1920s, Clara Bow! This was also the film that catapulted Gary Cooper to stardom and a career that would span into the 1960s. Mardi Gras is right around the corner, so we thought we’d head on down to New Orleans and explore the curious tale of Blanche, Stella, and Stanley. Based on Tennessee William’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name, this story brought to light the darkness and human conflict these characters experienced (and it would test the boundaries of the Production Code). Another heartbreak and loss of a film legend... Christopher Plummer has passed away. This Academy Award-winning star blessed us with several beloved characters over seven decades of being in the movies. From his role of Captain von Trapp to the beloved patriarch Harlan Thrombey, he brought to life some of our most treasured stories. We are so grateful to him for dedicating his life to the arts, and we will never forget his impact.
