Maddie gave us one of our favourite catchphrases of AfterThoughts of all time. SAY NO TO POO SHAMING! Maddie was diagnosed with Alveolar soft part sarcoma when she was 18. Shortly after she had primary tumour removed from her left shoulder, it was discovered the cancer had spread to her lungs. While her disease is currently stable, it is incurable and Maddie will be on treatment for life.

She joined us to tell her stories about dealing with stomach side-effects at Swiftogeddon, how writing a will can be empowering and how she became more confident talking openly about her cancer over time.

For an incredibly niche podcast like ours, getting any downloads feels pretty great. But hitting a big milestone? Priceless. So when we hit 10,000 downloads, we decided to check in with some of our guests from previous series to see what they were up to and how they were doing.
Listen now, wherever you usually get your podcasts. And check in on all the episodes there too.

The path to diagnosis isn't always straight forward, especially when you're diagnosed with cancer at a young age. Jake found himself in hospital with a blood clot in his arm after running a half marathon, only to be diagnosed with osteosarcoma some time later. But the real moment Jake knew something was seriously wrong? When his brother broke Jake's leg in a daft game.
Hear more about Jake's stories of his leg funeral, going through treatment during COVID-19, looking like (his words, not ours) 'a big fleshy moon' and training to be a paratriathlete.

HEY remember Aiden, our host for the most recent series of AfterThoughts? Here's his episode of AfterThoughts where he talks about diagnosing himself with cancer. He's a medical student and ended up down a cancer symptoms wormhole after watching After Life on Netflix.
Aiden was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma at 18. Listen to him chat about toxic positivity and its long-term impact on your mental health, the impact of his hair loss on his self-confidence (something we don't talk about enough when it comes to guys!) and tonnes more, wherever you get your podcasts.

The inimitable Lauren Mahon of You Me and the Big C spoke to us in Series 3 about the lasting impact of cancer on her mind. Chemo brain is something that's not mentioned all that much - but here Lauren tells us just how it impacts her everyday life.

Series Two saw us *dive in* to explore The Teenage Years. Partnering with Teenage Cancer Trust , we began unpicking what it's like to get diagnosed with cancer before you're 25.
Here, Bhav, who was diagnosed with follicular lymphoma when he was 13, shared with us the importance of having great people around you, pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and doing things that scare you.

We were really saddened to learn of the death of our friend last month. Kris died after living with secondary breast cancer for 15 years. Her diagnosis came after she was turned away from her GP because she was 'too young for cancer'. After her diagnosis, Kris decided to change the world and set up in an effort to stamp out late detection of breast cancer. She joined us on THE VERY FIRST series AfterThoughts to talk about her experience of living with cancer for 11 years at that point, and shared the story of the very first time she heard the CoppaFeel! Charity Number.

For the 🚨 final episode of the series 🚨, we're joined by Amber. Amber's from Ballymena in Northern Ireland, meaning we've ticked off England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales with this series. Feels like a pretty cool achievement.

BUT ENOUGH ABOUT US. This is about Amber. She was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour (which she initially thought was a hangover) when she was 19 and was only the third person in Northern Ireland to be diagnosed with her tumour.

We chatted about the support she got from her incredible Teenage Cancer Trust nurse, Carrie, using the cancer card and how being diagnosed with cancer at a young age changed her outlook on life.

SURELY you know the drill by now - but if not, ya can find the podcast wherever you usually listen to that sort of thing. Apple Podcasts, Audible, Spotify, Google Podcasts, THE WORKS.

Losing your hair as a result of chemotherapy is one of the most visible impacts of cancer and its treatments - but what are the invisible impacts of that?

For Yami, her confidence, so carefully built up, came crashing down when she was forced to shave off her afro. But over time, Yami realised she was fierce AF with her shorter hair. It wasn't a choice but she could still rock it, and she's gradually building up that confidence again.

Want to hear more of Yami's stories? Head over to the latest episode of AfterThoughts, wherever you get your podcasts. All the links are in our bio.

It's EPISODE FOUR! This time we're joined by Poppy for her tales of being diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma when she was 23. Not only is being diagnosed with cancer at 23 rare, Poppy was pregnant at the time. Her daughter, Bella (who she calls her boss) was born two days after her diagnosis, six weeks early. Poppy then spent over 130 nights away from her daughter in her first year of being alive because of her cancer treatment.

Tune in wherever you get your podcasts for these incredible stories. Poppy's another brilliant storyteller ✨.

About AfterThoughts

Every day, 34 young people in their 20’s and 30’s are diagnosed with cancer. These are the stories of what happens afterwards. This is Afterthoughts.

AfterThoughts looks at life beyond a cancer diagnosis when you’re under the age of 30. It features 7 topics from 7 young people. 100,000 young people in the UK live with, and beyond, cancer, this is a podcast that tells the rich and diverse stories of those young people.

We want to make the invisible impacts of a cancer diagnosis visible and showcase the lives of 7 diverse young people living with, or beyond, cancer. Through highlighting these stories, we shift the cancer narrative away from the mutated cells to the humans living in the aftermath of hearing the words “you have cancer” to prompt better discussion around the support available to people beyond a trauma like Cancer.

Hosted by Alice-May Purkiss & Toby Peach, two young people who have experienced cancer themselves, we explore 7 topics that get hidden away. Each guest will share an engaging short moment or story from their experience around our topics, to make the world of cancer more accessible to those who haven’t experienced it, whilst lessening the feeling of loneliness of others who have.
