Dear Artychoke Magazine readers, scrollers, supporters and collaborators, this is a quick announcement to say ‘SEE YOU SOON’!

After curating 10 wonderful issues with the astonishing contributions and works of over 60 artists and artistic collectives who have given their time and talent to fill our pages purely for the arts sake, we are taking a pause to digest all what we’ve achieved before we get cooking again.

We are not sure what shape will the future of Artychoke Zine take, but surely a spiky one!!

Keep up with the resistance and up and onwards with the arts!

Big hug,
AZ Team

Last but not least, we want to share this ‘join the dots’ creation by our wonderful and long time collaborator Adolfo Redaño.

Adolfo is a graphic and motion designer from Barcelona who has been an Artychoke collaborator since our very first issue! Always trying to find his own voice, he prefers having fun than following trends. His nickname ‘noesadrede’ (not on prupose) states his determination to use chance in his creative process.

Follow the link in our bio and treat yourself to our Spring Issue 2023!!

Ella Ballard is a kitchen manager and a baker based in Southsea. She likes exploring flavours, charity shops, cheese, coffee and collecting mugs.

For our Spring Issue 2023 centered around the theme of Abundance & Scarcity we asked her to bake a feature for us and the result is rather tasty, peeps!

‘I found a receipt from 2019 in which butter was £1.49 a block and eggs were £1. Nowadays, I rarely bake. Partly for the fact that it has become my job, but also because it’s become too costly.’

If this excerpt leaves you hungry, head to the link in our bio and get ready to devour Ella’s piece and those of our wonderful pool of collaborators!

Tim Dunk is an internationally acclaimed photographer capturing images around the world remotely, who we have wanted to spotlight for a while and finally managed to get hold off for our Spring Issue 2023!!!

We asked him to play with the abundance or scarcity of light, and the result are this series of deep, visceral explorations of movement and expression that just seem to keep giving.

Visit Artychoke’s Spring Edition to rejoice in the beauty of Tim’s series and the work of all the artists that have@contributed to it!

For our interview feature as part of Artychoke’s Spring Issue 2023, we had the pleasure to converse with Leeds based textile artist Andi Walker.

Using their work with garment and stitched narratives to challenge societal norms around gender and masculine femininity, we discussed the wonders of dressing up, their childhood in 1970s Yorkshire and the dichotomy between abundance and scarcity.

Get yourself a drink, follow the link in our bio and enjoy Andi Walker’s story.

‘A proposal from Artychoke Magazine lands into our Years 8 & 11 classrooms at Les Escolàpies del Masnou School in Barcelona, engaging the students into exploring the concepts of Abundance & Scarcity through the visual arts and by the hand of their Arts teacher, Núria Franquet. The students get curious and motivated; excited for the perspective of featuring their art works in an online magazine edited from the UK.’

In light of the more and more precarius working conditions of teachers in the UK and in response to the almost extinct arts subjects from UK educational curriculums, our Spring 2023 Issue features an ‘In Tandem’ collaboration between a group of students and their arts teacher with the purpose of stressing the essential task of educators and the unvaluable impact of offering creative and artistic subjects to our youngsters.

Enjoy the fabulous outcomes of their explorations around Abundance & Scarcity through the link in our bio.

Happy scrolling and happy Saturday!

Everett Pace wakes up sad and tries remembering that painting people and connecting with them in some level makes him happy.

An artist living in Brooklyn, New York City, Everett often has pastels on him in case a moment or encounter feels striking enough to try and capture on paper before it slips away. He’s not sure this brings him further in or out of the moment, but seems worth it when it’s happening.

Our Autumn Issue 2022 features a collection of his ‘Slippery Moments’ series from a trip he recently took with his best friends. He says that ‘drawing characters along the way made me feel less of an outsider.’

Take a walk through Everett’s trip by the hand of his instant patel portraits!

For our Autumn Issue 2022 dedicated to MIGRATION, we conversed with three wonderful women who shared their stories of migration with us.

Bintan Titisari is one of them; an indonesian textile maker and lecturer who, encouraged by her parents romantic stories about the old continent, move to Europe to study a Phd. Bintan now lives halfway between the asian archipelago and the UK, leading a complex yet fascinating hybrid life.

As part of our Autumn Issue 2022 dedicated to MIGRATION, we spoke with three wonderful women who shared their stories of migration with us.

Tanya Bogdanovska is one of them; a digital artist from Ukraine who, in the space of forty-eight hours, had to evacuate her apartment in Kiev, leave her homeland against her will and start anew.

For our Autum Issue 2022 dedicated to MIGRATION, we interviewed three wonderful women who’ve shared their stories of migration with us.

Mahshid Alavi is one of them; an iranian dancer, photographer and filmmaker. The censorship and repression that artists - specially if female identifying - have to endure in Iran pushed her to move away and seek freedom elsewhere.

Hey-ho! Our autumn issue is ready to go!

Our Autumn issue zooms into the notion of migration. A concept that first entered our cognition on the wings of swallows flying south in the winter, salmon battling upstream and turtles returning perennially to lay their eggs on the same beach.

Poignantly, and as we have aged and opened our ears to rest of the world, the meaning of migration has evolved from the wanderings of fauna to encompass the movement of people. Migration out of choice, for money, for love, for greater opportunities, for safety.

This issue explores art that centres on the migratory experience and crucially work by migrant artists. Whether pulled by the lure of a new place, or pushed by the forces within, migration is infused within the core of their work and we're excited for you to discover it.

Enjoy!

The ‘Spotlight’ feature of our Summer issue shines on Marianne Tuckman and her one-woman-show ‘The Dirt’. Marianne is a choreographer, performer, facilitator, and writer based between Berlin and Leeds. The communication of stories is what motivates her to make work that combines humour, poetic metaphors, guttural dancing and chat.

Her solo show ‘The Dirt’ responds to the CLIMATE EMERGENCY and the way it has invaded our most intimate spaces: our homes, our bodies and our visions of the future.

Check our Summer issue and find out more about Marianne and her honest, humorous and intimate work. Link in BiO.

Our Summer issue 2022 showcases John’s poignant print series on Climates Crisis.

From John: ‘You would think that addressing the Climate Crisis would be the prime efforts of governments globally, yet incredibly it still feels like a resistance movement.’

Check out the full series of these bold and necessary linocut prints through the link in our bio or visit www.artychokezine.com
