Considered by many to be one of the greatest JRPGs ever created, Chrono Trigger was released for the Super Nintendo in 1995 from Squaresoft. From a development team that consisted of Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yuji Horii, & Akira Toriyama, Chrono Trigger spans numerous time periods that allows the player to achieve multiple different endings based on choices they make throughout. I played this shortly after it came out and loved it – it really does merit all the praise it gets.

One of the last games released for the Super Famicom in 1998, Rockman & Forte (Mega Man & Bass) is an action platformer from Capcom. Allowing players to choose from Rockman (Mega Man) or Forte (Bass), this game follows the conventional Mega Man formula of fighting a series of robot masters, taking their weapons, etc. Known for its intense difficulty and questionable game design, R&F remains a controversial title among fans of the series. This game can be straight up mean and jank, and yet its one of my favorite MM games.

Life Force, known as Salamander in Japan, is a 1986 arcade schmup from Konami, which was ported to the NES in 1988. Part of the Gradius series, Life Force features horizontal and vertical scrolling levels with the ability to continue from where a player died as opposed to predefined checkpoints. The NES port contains new content such as additional bosses and levels. This is easily my favorite schmup on the NES, one I first played as a kid.

Released in 2005 for the Nintendo Gamecube, Star Fox: Assault is a 3D scrolling shooter / third-person shooter divided into three sections: Arwing flight combat, Landmaster tank action, and on-foot play. Including a multiplayer mode and numerous unlockables, the game nonetheless received lukewarm reviews at the time. I had a lot of fun with this when I got it and would like to revisit it soon.

Contra III: The Alien Wars is a run-and-gun game from Konami released in 1992 for the Super Nintendo. Showcasing the power of the SNES, Contra III follows the tradition of previous Contra titles while adding new powerups, bigger and harder bosses, and more intense levels with Mode 7 effects. A childhood favorite of mine, beating this for the first time on Hard mode is a memory I’ll never forget.

An FMV game for the Sega CD, Night Trap was released in in 1992 by Digital Pictures and staring sitcom actress Dana Plato. Night Trap was infamously used as an example of violent video games by useless members of the United States Senate in a 1993 committee hearing that earned it notoriety. I only played this a few years after the controversy and thought it to be camp with boring gameplay.

Released in 1992 for MS-DOS, King’s Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow is the sixth chapter of Roberta Williams’ acclaimed King’s Quest series. A point-and-click-adventure game, King’s Quest VI features rich graphics for the time with a focus on solving puzzles as the player guides Prince Alexander on his journey. I spent hours playing this as a kid and still go back to it here and there.

Mega Man 7 is an action platformer from Cacpom for the Super Nintendo released in 1995. It introduces new concepts and characters while staying true to the formula of the original games it follows. I only played this after MM8 – it was very hard to find a copy of this when it came out – and it’s a game I really like; the final fight with Wily here is definitely the series’ most difficult IMO.
