Continuing our winter-session partnership with the grad seminar Media Methods and Content Creation, Special Topics in Media connected with Dr. Christine Becker, Associate Professor of Television in the Department of Film, Television, and Theater at the University of Notre Dame to discuss her collaborative roles as cohost, coproducer, and programming planner for the -Media Podcast, the official pod for the Journal of Cinema and Media Studies and the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS).

This month Special Topics in Media intersects with the grad seminar . In conjunction with student projects, we picked back up our interviewing series with the hosts of SpyHards - A Spy Movie Podcast. Agents Scott and Cam joined us for hardy conversation about podcasting, genre media, and the labor values necessary to sustain quality media production.

This past week we published our 75th episode (public that is). Very excited for the programming blocks we have in store for 2024!

Special Topics in Media Studies is a lecture-based podcast that tackles media history one artifact at a time. Each season of the series we will investigate a different mass media theme, medium, or programming genre. While our focus is educational (it is an academic podcast after all), we tailor our....

As promised, PART 2 of our Killers of the Flower Moon CROSSOVER EVENT between Special Topics in Media and The Okie Bookcast is now available! Whereas Part 1 emphasizes the book-to-film process of adaptation and historical accuracy, Part 2 represents our initial impressions of the film.

Listeners DO NOT need to listen to these episodes in any particular order, just as audiences do not have to read the book before seeing the movie, or vice versa.

We analyze this cultural artifact from a filmic perspective and in relation to its Oklahoma production process, hence our "first impressions".

We also recorded this conversation within 48 hours of its national release, so it does not take into account the hefty cultural commentaries that continue to emerge in the wake of its release. These reactions to the film are insightful and informative, and the collective hope is that impressions of all these materials bring constructive attention to everyone involved.

Special thanks to Okie Bookcast host J Hall for curating this opportunity to sit down and examine these texts through multiple lenses. That investigative process aligns with our educational mission toward democratized learning through analytic discourse.

Special Topics in Media was invited to participate in a CROSSOVER EVENT this week! We teamed up with the The Okie Bookcast to spotlight the release of Martin Scorsese’s film adaptation of David Grann’s New York Times Bestseller, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI.

Already courting high praise and social scrutiny alike for its artistic choices, the film was shot in and takes place around the state of Oklahoma and Osage County in particular. Killers of the Flower Moon is rapidly emerging as a contested cultural artifact that mediates both on darker deeds done and the collective will to persevere historical injustices.

We encourage listeners to check out PART 1 of our conversation on the Okie Bookcast feed (available EVERYWHERE, but you can like/follow them on Facebook). Part 1 focuses on the process of book-to-film adaptation and is available NOW! Special Topics will host Part 2 very soon, where we turn our critical attention to the film itself.

Something a little different for this episode. I'm joined by Garret Castleberry and Scott McMurry from the Special Topics in Media podcast to talk about the film version of Killers of the Flower Moon and how it works as an adaptation of David Gran...
