MOVIE SUGGESTION:

Movie: Sir, 2020
Director: Rohena Gera
Writer: Rohena Gera
Language: Hindi
Country: India

This is not a review of the movie itself. The following points are my views about the topics that were discussed in this movie.

This is one of the beautiful movie I have watched recently. I am very late to the party but I am happy that I have seen this movie now. Among all the chaotic, mystery thriller movies this one scores well as a feel good one. The casting of the movie is top notch. They did not glamourise the maid character like how they do in other Indian mainstream movies. Also this movie shown the class similarities in a subtle way and did not try to forcefully feed the difficulties that poor people go through. The lead character, the maid, Ratna is full of life and gives the audience a hope. There is a scene where Ashwin, the other lead character strolls around the construction workers' living area which showed the economic difference between them and the rich people living in Mumbai. Like Fandry ( Marathi movie) this film also tried to show how there is a big gap between people with two different classes ( in Fandry it was two different castes) and how it affects the most humane thing in the world, Love.

NOT A REVIEW

Movie: Mimi, 2021
Director: Laxman Utekar
Writer: Laxman Utekar, Rohan Shankar, Amitabh Bhattacharya
Language: Hindi
Country: India

This is not a review of the movie itself. The following points are my views about the topics that were discussed in this movie.

Even though there are laws stating abortion is legal, and around the world, many women are still fighting for their rights over their bodies, there are certain films that pleads anti-abortion and anti-women propaganda. Not just Bollywood movies but movies all over the world preaches this. In this movie, the director goes one step further and tells the audience how great motherhood is by ignoring the mother's dreams and raise a child.

In the movie, Mimi finds out that her surrogate child has down syndrome yet, she decides to keep the baby stating that aborting is like killing a child. Mimi is like six months pregnant when she hears this news and, aborting a child could be dangerous for her and, the character she is playing is from a small town where no one has good knowledge about abortion and surrogacy.

So one could argue that Mimi was correct in making that decision but, the problem here is director tries to convey to the audience that abortion is like killing a child in a scene where the doctor and Mimi have a conversation. This scene scraps the character of a woman who is aborting a child because of physical abuse, for health reasons or just because she is not ready for a child yet. With the technology we have right now, down syndrome is detected way early in pregnancy. There is nothing wrong with a woman having control over her body.

Raising a child for a mother should not or will not be a hindrance in achieving her dreams. Instead of being progressive, this movie took us back to decades.

The good thing about this movie is the casting. Kriti Sanon has acted well in this movie, as she always does. But the scripts she chooses time after time do not do justice for her talent. And Pankaj Tripathi is in a zone where he cannot go wrong in the movies/series he is acting. All the supporting actors, Kriti Sanon's parents, and her friend, played by Sai Tamhankar performances were also good. But the junior artist who played Mimi's son in the second half was cringy but, then the script demanded a foreign kid to speak Hindi, so we cannot blame the kid who acted for it.

MOVIE: No country for oldmen, 2007
Writer and Director: Coen brothers
Country: USA

Javier Bardem plays a serial killer for whom killing people is meaningless hence sometimes he has fun while killing by giving the victims a chance for them to decide their fate through a coin toss.

In this particular scene Anton Chigurh, the character played by Javier goes to a petrol pump and fills up gas. After filling up the gas he buys a bag of cashews and heads to the bill counter. An old man who owns the pump is there at the bill counter saying 6 dollars for the cashews. When Anton asks how much for the gas instead of telling the price the old man takes little interest in the place that Anton is coming from. The old man says he noticed that Anton is coming from Dallas. Now Anton is a serial killer and he doesn't like people to notice his business.

So Anton enquires about the old man to know what else he knows about him and finds out that the old man got this pump from his in-law. The decisions that he made throughout his life have made him meet Anton and be in this situation. Although Anton has decided to kill the old man he wants to give him a chance by flipping the coin. Before he flips the coin he keeps his empty chocolate wrapper on the table and we can hear it slowly unkink. There was no music used for this scene hence this sound creates tension between the two characters and also the old man keeps on answering Anton's questions politely and carefully as he doesn't want to trigger him.

Now after flipping the coin Anton asks him what's the most he has lost in coin coss. He keeps giving the old man a hint about what's about to go down but the old man is still unclear on what he is calling the coin for. After a few dialogue exchanges, the old man calls the head and it is head so Anton leaves without killing him. There is another scene towards the end of the movie where Anton asks a woman to call for the coin but she refuses as she knows what is at stake in the call. Here the old man doesn't know the stake and hence he calls it and to his luck he called it correctly.

This scene is one of the cinematic masterpieces on creating tension between the two characters with just dialogues and performances of the actors. And also this scene works well because it correlates with the theme of the movie that we are all responsible for the decisions that we take.

CURIOUS CASE OF DIRECTORS SARAN AND LINGUSAMY

Indian movies are popular in creating a genre called "masala" movies. Masala itself means a mix of spices hence masala movies mean a mix of genres like comedy, action, romance, and drama. These types of movies were predominantly seen in the early 1970s and took a peak in MGR and Rajinikanth movies in Kollywood, which was later carried by Vijay and Ajithkumar respectively. Many writers and directors were successful in this genre but there was some repetitiveness in those movies eventually after the early 1990s. Then came a few directors like Sankar, Murugadoss, Vikraman, Hari who used to have their style of editing and making the movie and were successful. Among these, I think directors Saran and Lingusamy could have stood out in making commercial entertainments as they had a unique way of creating a film. For example, Saran's Jemini is easily one of the best strong protagonist and antagonist characters in a masala film and Lingusamy's Paiyaa doesn't offer a unique storyline but the treatment of the movie as a road film made it a commercial success. Saran's Amarkalam, Kadhal mannan, Gemini, Jay Jay doesn't talk about a flawless protagonist who carries the entire film and saves people or the heroine from an antagonist like other "masala" movies does. And he also successfully remade Munna Bhai MBBS in Tamil as remaking a good movie is always a tough job. But Vasool raja MBBS was also a box-office success. Meanwhile, Lingusamy gave hits with his films Run, Sandakozhi, Anandham and he also introduced Madhavan, Vishal, and Karthi as a "mass" hero in the Tamil film industry. These two directors could have easily entered the elite list of successful commercial directors like KS Ravikumar, Sankar, etc but they were let down by making a few experiments in their movies lil Saran's Vattaram and Modhi vilayadu. The concept of killing both protagonist and heroine in the climax of Lingusamy's Beema is not familiar to most Tamil audiences and that movie flunked in the box office. Lingusamy's movies also have some beautiful shots in Sandakozhi (which is talked about still now), Vettai as he collaborates with sound cinematographers like Nirav Shah, Santosh Sivan, etc. If not for a few experiments in his movies by Saran and if not for Anjaan and pre-release interview of Anjaan by Lingusamy there could have been a chance for them to be a successful commercial director. But in my personal opinion, their movies were one of the few which I enjoyed for both commercially appealing and also for out-of-cliche screenplays.

PART2: If suddenly a bomb goes off and someone dies in a scene audience will be shocked and surprised. Instead, if we show them that there is a bomb that is about to explode in 5 minutes then the audience will be in suspense till the bomb goes off. Alfred Hitchcock talked about this theory in an interview. And this scene from Inglorious Basterds is one of the best examples of that theory. This is the second part of Inglorious basterds' opening scene write-up. Once Hans Landa starts investigating he did not right away threaten the French guy asking him where he has hidden the jews. He first gains confidence by asking him about the rumors that he heard about the missing Jew family and also asking him to make himself comfortable by smoking his pipe once the French guy asks permission for it. While these two people are talking Tarantino reveals us the Jew family who are hiding under the floor bed which is the time bomb theory Hitchcock talks about. Tarantino revealed that the Jews are hiding underneath neither at the start nor at the end but during a conversation so that audience will be in mystery for the remaining conversation. Then Landa tells a metaphor comparing rats to Jews and asks permission to the French guy to smoke his pipe. Landa's pipe is more classy and dominating than the French guy's. Now as a final act he threatens the French guy if he doesn't show him where the Jews are hiding. Finally after his men kills the Jew family and Shoshana escapes from them Landa says " Au revoir " meaning will meet again instead of goodbye and obviously they met again.

MOVIE SUGGESTION:

Movie: Ee.Ma.Yau, 2018
Language: Malayalam
Country: India
Director: Lijo Jose Pellisery
Writer: P.F.Mathews
Cinematographer: Shyju Khalid

Lijo Jose is a filmmaker for ages. His movies, stories, narrative style, single-shot sequences everything speaks for themselves. He is one of the important filmmakers in Kerala who developed new generation films and this movie is my personal favorite from his filmography. Ee.Ma.Yau, an acronym for Eesho Mariyam Ouseppe, in certain Christian communities, these words are written on the top of funeral cards that are used to inform people of a person’s death.
The incidents in this movie happen mostly during the night and it is shot in natural light to give the audience the essence of reality. All the characters, metaphors around death and how dead people travel to the afterlife, and the desi version of God and Satan playing the game of cards in the village are all beautifully written by P.F.Mathews who himself is the author of several books. P.F.Mathews once said to write a screenplay one should be aware of the politics that is been going around him and this film is an example of his political knowledge as it deals with many socio-political issues. The signature one-shot sequence of Lijo Jose in his films continued in this film also and is carefully etched with so many people in the crew and also in natural light. There are many great performances from the actors Chemban, Vinayakan, and the heroes of this film the director and cinematographer which will make the audience feel that they were actually in a funeral after watching the film.

Movie: Kadhala Kadhala, 1998
Writer: Kamal Haasan and Crazy Mohan
Director: Singeetam Srinivasa Rao
Language: Tamil
Country: India

This whole movie is a masterpiece of comedy movies in Tamil, and as usual, it came from the masterminds of Kamal Haasan and Crazy Mohan. The reason for this duo's success is the clever screenplay by Kamal combined with Crazy Mohan's dialogues and, more importantly, Kamal's inch-perfect dialogue delivery and acting. Director Thiagaraja Kumararaja (Aaranya Kaandam, Super Deluxe) once said that he approaches directing a scene as dance choreography. This scene from Kadhala Kadhala is a perfect example of that. It is perfectly staged and choreographed. There are eight actors in this frame and, most of them are well known for their acting skills. While the three actors in front are having a conversation, Kamal, Soundarya, Rambha, and, PrabhuDeva are performing slapstick comedy behind them. And as the scene progresses, they join the other actors and continue their dialogues. Since Prabhudeva stammers, he does not have much dialogue in this scene, so we can see him moving from left to right and continue his slapstick comedy when all the other actors are having a conversation. He has only one dialogue ("apo poi kulingoo...") which he tells with stammering is also placed well at the end of the scene. Prabhudeva's acting skills are exploited well in this movie, where he acts at par with Kamal Haasan in most of the scenes. This movie has a good screenplay where characters are put in quirky situations and lots and lots of wordplay by Crazy Mohan and great staging and acting by the whole cast which, consolidated and gave the audiences a good laugh.

PART1: If suddenly a bomb goes off and someone dies in a scene audience will be shocked and surprised. Instead, if we show them that there is a bomb that is about to explode in 5 minutes then the audience will be in suspense till the bomb goes off. Alfred Hitchcock talked about this theory in an interview. And this scene from Inglorious Basterds is one of the best examples of that theory. Since this scene has many things to talk about, I am going to post about this scene in two parts. At the beginning of the scene, Quentin showed us the geographic location of the French family with ease by just using normal camera setups. Ironically in that scene, the French guy will have his hatchet buried. As the french guy is cutting a tree Hans Landa and his men will be approaching his house from a distance. Once the french guy sees them approaching his house, he will ask his daughter to fetch him some water and, he will start preparing himself by washing himself for the things that are going to go down after Hans Landa reaches his house. The French guy even asks his daughter not to run so that it won't look suspicious. After Hans reaches the french family's house, he greets the french guy, and no where we could able to see Over The Shoulder shot for the french guy because from his OTS Hans will look smaller but Quentin masterfully shows that Hans is the bigger man here and he is here to dominate.
We can notice this even when Lans enters the house and sits on a table. All the shots were planned to make him look dominating. Lans is very nice and polite to the family but we know that there are no polite N***s. He does this to let the family lower their guards and tell him the truth about where they have hidden the Jews. He keeps looking at the french guy's daughters like a hawk who were already shaken by his presence. From the window, we can see the n***s waiting outside with guns explaining the danger that is waiting outside. Once the daughters went outside Lans ask permission from the french guy to let him speak in English so that any hiding Jews in the house would not know what they're saying.

Movie: Fandry, 2013
Director and writer: Nagraj Manjule
Language: Marathi
Scene: Climax
Country: India

This is an another charming movie that deals with caste system in India. Since am here to post about a one beautiful scene about films I have watched, I will just stick talking about that particular scene alone eventhough the whole movie is spectacular.
So the screen grab above belongs to the climax of this movie, a brief fifteen minutes long climax about how people see the lower caste family in their village.
In this scene Jambu ( protagonist ) will be asked to hunt a pig with his family near his school and he will be embarrassed that his classmates especially his crush will see him.
As the scene progress, he slowly understands that people are just watching their family hunting a pig as an IPL match and his shackles were broken even more deeper when he saw that his crush also enjoys watching them. And when they started teasing his sister he finally realizes his boundary among the other villagers and reached self awareness. As anyone who watched the movie he also explodes and pelts stones at them. This scene is not just beautifully written it is also beautifully shot with steadicam and with subtle VFX.

Movie: Onayum aatukutiyum, 2013
Director and writer: Mysskin
Language: Tamil
Scene: Monologue

As I was wondering what to post about movies I remembered something said by director mysskin in one of his interviews, " oru padam nalla padam nu solrathuku oru nalla scene iruntha pothum" meaning "you may know by a handful the whole". So am gonna follow that template and post one scene that stands out in movies that I love.

I love this movie for many reasons. One of the reasons being the movie started with a climax. Yes, in most of the movies we will get to see a protagonist who does something awful, and eventually, at the climax, he will be reformed. His character arc would be the entire story but in this movie, the character is already reformed from the first scene we will just travel through him to know the background of his story and what are all the struggles he goes through for that reformation. And unlike many films, we won't have separate flashback scenes about the protagonist instead we have this scene (above picture). These 5 mins themselves will explain to you the whole story behind the protagonist and we can empathize with him and that's where I believe that the writer stands tall.
