Camp Shack Roots

It all began when I was 6 years old, dropped off at summer camp for the day with a rush of excitement mixed with fear as I watched my mom drive away. There I was in the middle of the most energetic and happy group of people I have ever seen. They were so happy to see each other, everyone had something to share, and no one was left out. I had found my place, camp.

Camp is where I grew up, made mistakes, learned from those, and made new mistakes. Camp is where I found an extended family that I never knew could exist that is still with me today and continues to grow. Camp is where I was accepted, loved, and where I eventually had the amazing opportunity to create those same feelings and experiences for others.

Summer camp is special not only because of what we did, but who met along the way. As a team we worked to create something unique, inspired by the common drive to have an awesome time together. What we offered to kids was rooted in the Every Child Philosophy, where every child deserves respect, a place to belong, a physically and emotionally safe place, a chance to succeed, and our best all of the time.

Each day we learned something new, from each other, from our families, and especially from the kids. We learned how to communicate, how to accept, and how to love. We shared life’s happiest moments and supported each other through some of life’s most difficult. There is no other place like camp to help support you and guide you through life.
