Uncommon is more than what meets the eye. We heal and unite through artful storytelling. But what does that really mean?

It's like the saying... “Be kind, you never know what someone is going through”

But what if we did know? What if we actually spoke up and talked about the things we have endured? Barriers would be broken and bridges of connection would be built in its place.

For generations, we have been taught to “be a man” and “suck it up” because we measured strength with our ability to suppress emotions. Why weren't we told to just "be human"?

Our lives constantly hang in the balance of mental health. Whether you are diagnosed, undiagnosed or have a healthy chemical balance in your brain, you or someone you know IS affected by mental illness. It's a hard topic to discuss, but it doesn't need to be.

More often than not, when someone dies by su***de, people say "I wish I knew what they were going through." or "Why didn't they reach out" The hard truth is that they probably did talk about it. They probably did try to reach out. But as a society, most of us are not equipped to recognize the invisible signs of rising distress.

What we CAN do is make it easier to discuss openly and consistently. When you have a mental illness, it doesn't go away. Some days are better; some days are worse. When those bad days come, we need a space that has already been established. Somewhere you can run to without having to explain yourself. A place to "just be human."

That's why we created Uncommon. We are a community of storytellers who come from all walks of life. We have created a safe space for you to share your story in your words and on your terms. We help share those stories so the world can understand you for who you truly are. A survivor. An advocate. A human.

Taryn Grows has spent the better part of a decade serving the small business community through her work in business development, communications and events for Folsom and the greater Sacramento area. With a true love for cultivating and creating community partnerships and any opportunity for fun (or to sing Whitney Houston) Taryn's passion for small business led her to want to pursue opening her own microbrewery with her father. In the interim, she spends her days on the project management side of I.T. at Stanford University, but still finds any opportunity to grab a microphone as MC at incredible events like the Folsom Pro Rodeo, the BOLD speaker series, the Folsom Women's Conference and ELITE by Choice leadership event.

Join us Friday, December 30, at 6pm in Folsom, CA, for The Unveiling!

As a singer and songwriter, Canaan Smith understands the importance of storytelling. Music has always been a way to bring people together. Whether you relate to the lyrics or connect with the tune, it’s a way for us to find common ground over something we enjoy.

In a recent Forbes article, Canaan discussed losing his vision as an artist. It took stepping away from a big label and joining a smaller one to get back to his roots.

“I've evolved the most as a human with the experience that comes in six years of being on the road, having radio success, not having radio success, getting married, having a baby, walking away from a deal, signing a new one, feeling lost, feeling found,” he says. “It's affected everything from my songwriting to the sound of the album.”

We are creatures of habit, and when something happens, good or bad, it can throw off other aspects of life. It’s so important to stay grounded during all of life’s curveballs and not lose sight of the dreams you have for yourself.

Canaan is one of many examples of coming back bigger and better after being true and honest with himself about life, his career and his future. Recognizing what serves you and removing what doesn’t is the best way to grow as a person.

Hear more of Canaan’s story and his music at The Unveiling on Friday, December 30 at 6pm in Folsom, CA.
