Uncommon is more than what meets the eye. We heal and unite through artful storytelling. But what does that really mean?
It's like the saying... “Be kind, you never know what someone is going through”
But what if we did know? What if we actually spoke up and talked about the things we have endured? Barriers would be broken and bridges of connection would be built in its place.
For generations, we have been taught to “be a man” and “suck it up” because we measured strength with our ability to suppress emotions. Why weren't we told to just "be human"?
Our lives constantly hang in the balance of mental health. Whether you are diagnosed, undiagnosed or have a healthy chemical balance in your brain, you or someone you know IS affected by mental illness. It's a hard topic to discuss, but it doesn't need to be.
More often than not, when someone dies by su***de, people say "I wish I knew what they were going through." or "Why didn't they reach out" The hard truth is that they probably did talk about it. They probably did try to reach out. But as a society, most of us are not equipped to recognize the invisible signs of rising distress.
What we CAN do is make it easier to discuss openly and consistently. When you have a mental illness, it doesn't go away. Some days are better; some days are worse. When those bad days come, we need a space that has already been established. Somewhere you can run to without having to explain yourself. A place to "just be human."
That's why we created Uncommon. We are a community of storytellers who come from all walks of life. We have created a safe space for you to share your story in your words and on your terms. We help share those stories so the world can understand you for who you truly are. A survivor. An advocate. A human.
