Prior to this, our friends left to right: Matt & Chelsea + Cora & Tyler () () () had been traveling together since completing Oregon’s highpeak & beyond as they are full-timers.

It was such a fantastic moment for us all to pickup right where we left off for the first time since Fal and I moved to Iowa. The van had been collecting dust, waiting patiently for Fal’s summer of Med School to commence.

Knowing we had 4 states left and a lot of time available this summer, we began planning with these guys.

Looking back now, I am so glad we did!

It’s never the trips you take you regret, it’s the ones you don’t.

These are moments we will never get back,
& stories we will one day thank ourselves for creating…
As we rock on our porches, telling stories about living in a van down by a river… cleaning ourselves in waters fed by glaciers with not a care in the world.

P.S. Happy Birthday Ty we love ya dude ✌️

Our first destination was Denali National Park,
📍 Specifically Sugar Loaf Ridge | 2600 ft elevation gain.

This was one of the few dog friendly hikes as it was across the river and technically outside the park.

As we ascended the final summit (plenty of false ones), the sun was setting on the horizon scattering it’s fragmented rays across the undulating peaks.

Sidenote, this was midnight, because the Midnight Sun & all ☀️ 🤣

Six years ago, Zak and I met at the top of Katahdin at the very beginning of the Appalachian Trail. Both of us started the trail believing that we’d do it alone, but we soon found out through hours, days, weeks, and eventually months of walking next to each other, that we were better together than we were separate.

First sharing a tent, then sharing our first apartment, then building out and sharing a van, to now sharing a home in Iowa, I could not be more grateful to have such a loving, thoughtful, creative, compassionate, and kind person by my side.

This July in Alaska, we spent our anniversary week doing what we love to do most: hiking, eating, and watching Stranger Things. A few days into our week, we hiked Reed Lakes in Hatcher Pass- one of the hikes Zak had been telling me he had wanted to do for a long time. Little did I know, it was so he could ask me to marry him.

The hike was stunning, and as we hiked down, the sun came out over the valley. We ended our day with a LOT of food at Panda Express, and a shower and ice cream at a gas station. It was the most perfect day.

What a privilege it is to get to spend the rest of my life with my best friend. I can’t wait for all of the hiking, food, and adventures that await us.

PS- we hiked back up a week later to get these pictures. But let’s all take a second to appreciate that Zak framed and took every single one of these on a tripod. They were a real pain to pose for, but they came out beautiful 🥲🥰

Our last campsite in the Yukon before Alaska 🏔️

📍 Destruction Bay, Yukon, Canada 🇨🇦

This was such a peaceful rest stop.
Not all places look like this.
In fact, most don’t.

The actual rest stops we normally omit capturing… because they are that, normal.

Often what we capture is the abnormal, or exceptional…
Although we capture much on the road because there is more novelty in our days… still there is normalcy.
Just a friendly reminder :)

Here’s one of the beautiful ones where the mountains perfectly frame us with a foreground of wild purple flowers.

like this, we hold onto 🌱

In honor of Canada day yesterday, here’s pne of our best campspots yet!

The journey continues,
Z&F

A few photos from the most remote Canadian Town we have visited to date!
-
The morning of Day 8, we passed Bear Glacier, before entering Stewart, BC.

A town where nearly every resident here only stays during the summer.

Before entering town you follow open river after open river gushing from the recent snowmelt. Woods teeming with wildlife from side to side, and a destination that felt like a proper start for us after exiting the Canadian Rockies a few days prior.

Once you enter Stewart, you are greeted by the stunning estuary nestled between snow capped peaks with intermittent spring blooms amongst the grasses.

Why These Four Presidents👇
-
As quoted by the NPS, “Gutzon Borglum selected these four presidents because from his perspective, they represented the most important events in the history of the United States.”

1️⃣George Washington ( #1): Born 1732, died 1799. Washington led the colonists in the American Revolutionary War to win independence from Great Britain. He was the father of the new country and laid the foundation of American democracy. Because of his importance, Borglum chose Washington to be the most prominent figure on the mountain and represent the birth of the United States.

2️⃣Thomas Jefferson ( #3): Born 1743, died 1826. Jefferson was the primary author of the Declaration of Independence, a document which inspires democracies around the world. He also purchased the Louisiana Territory from France in 1803 which doubled the size of our country, adding all or part of fifteen present-day states. Gutzon Borglum chose Jefferson to represent the growth of the United States.

3️⃣Theodore Roosevelt ( #26): Born 1858, died 1919. Roosevelt provided leadership when America experienced rapid economic growth as it entered the 20th Century. He was instrumental in negotiating the construction of the Panama Canal, linking the east and the west. He was known as the “trust buster” for his work to end large corporate monopolies and ensure the rights of the common working man. Borglum chose Roosevelt to represent the development of the United States.

4️⃣Abraham Lincoln ( #16): Born 1809, died 1865. Lincoln held the nation together during its greatest trial, the Civil War. Lincoln believed his most sacred duty was the preservation of the union. It was his firm conviction that slavery must be abolished. Gutzon Borglum chose Lincoln to represent the preservation of the United States.

Borglum’s choices reflect his perspective on the key moments that shaped America, though other artists might choose differently based on their views.

Here are a few images from our first National park on this trip & our first full day on the road.

Pictures:

1️⃣: Fal and Auggie at our first campground stay.
📍 Cedar Pass Campground, Badlands National Park

2️⃣ Dinner Fal cooked up while I was getting my camera fix in of the hardwork she was doing :)

3️⃣ Morning 3, a lonely picnic table.

4️⃣-5️⃣: Gearing up for our journey of nearly 600 miles, to the ends of South Dakota, into and through Wyoming, and ultimately landing at a rest stop north of Billings, MT. Water was needed and a sump station was unfortunately needed too.

6️⃣: RAMMM! We were so pleasantly surprised to see this guy the morning we left the Badlands. Som dumb guy though got ultra close trying to take some photos and disturbed him and woke him from a nap he way taking. All I could think, is he better hope this Ram doesn’t buck his ass down one of these Badland hoodoos. So here he was scratching his horns on the ground me praying he’d wake his disturber. Must have been itchy? Remember to respect the wildlife 😉

7️⃣-8️⃣: Badlands landscape shot 1

9️⃣-🔟: Badlands landscape shot 2
