Having THIS mindset when you're tackling challenging issues with your teen can make all the difference! Instead of just telling them what to do, our teens need to stretch their own problem-solving skills. They don't need us to jump in and save them all the time (and the more we do that, the more we actually—unintentionally—communicate a lack of trust in them).

Allowing our teens to try (and sometimes fail) with our support and guidance goes a long way towards building their own self-awareness and confidence.

How many times have your kids or teens come to you with problems and you immediately go into fix-it mode?

It's important to pause, validate, and connect BEFORE getting into problem-solving mode so you can face the issue as a team, rather than just telling them what to do.

This is SO IMPORTANT. Stress isn't going anywhere, and there's no way to avoid it completely. Instead, we need to equip ourselves with strategies to help us process these feelings more efficiently and in a healthy way.

Mindfulness is one helpful tool, but we get into more in this conversation with .theparentingcoach 👉 https://www.thebrainymoms.com/2023/06/29/jeanine-mouchawar-parent-teen-partnership/

Sound familiar?

When teens act out, rebel, or break boundaries, the first gut reaction you probably have is to tighten the reins and helicopter a little more closely... but this may not have the long-term effects you really want.

Ann’s story prompts us to question the long-held belief in helicopter parenting and its impact on teen autonomy.

If you're at your wits end with trying to find effective consequences for your teen’s behavior, it may be that loosening the reins rather than tightening them might work better!

We want our kids to have an "easy" life, but is that really what's going to serve them best?

Jodi Aman Live argues that the ease of modern conveniences actually amplifies anxiety because our brains are wired for problem-solving. Even if there isn't an imminent threat, our brains create problems to solve, leading to feelings of unease and anxiety.

We're not saying we need to backtrack hundreds of years (we'll keep our vacuums and dishwashers, thank you very much)... Instead, you can help your teen channel this part of their brain in challenges like creative outlets, sports, clubs, chores around the home, and volunteer opportunities in the community.

Connection is the #1 buffer against mental health crises for our kids and teens, but even when we're in the same room together, we're often not actually "connecting."

✨Here's your reminder: put down the phone. Turn off the TV. Have a conversation. Get to know your kids where they are today.

When your teen is anxious or stressed, what is the first thing you do?

Most likely, it's to try to remove something from their plate. But consider 👉 what message is this really communicating?

Instead, if we equip our teens with the skills they need in order to live life more independently and confidently, we communicate that we trust them, and they begin to trust themselves, too.

Looking to get your kids more involved in household tasks? Lean into their strengths—not what they *should* be good at.

You may be surprised at the son who is GREAT at cleaning a bathroom... or the daughter who rocks garbage duty... or the younger siblings who are better at vacuuming than their older brother or sister...

Rethinking household tasks to align with a child's strengths is a great training ground to prepare them to be a better roommate, partner, or spouse one day!

Instead of blanket rules for everyone in your home, reframing each person's expectations in alignment with a "bank of trust" may be helpful.

When the bank is full, maybe you're able to relax curfews for good reasons, or you're a little more free with video game time or going out with new friends...

But when the bank is overdrawn or running low, you draw things in a little tighter—but just until the deposits are made again.

It's ok for your rules to change. It's ok for them to be different for each kid. You're doing the best you can with what you know—and that is good enough. 💖
