Parks Canada honours Sergeant Tommy Prince, a prominent Anishinaabe activist and veteran who served in the Second World War and the Korean War. His bravery in battle and community advocacy at home made a lasting impact on the country.

His story is one of the most widely known examples of the wartime contributions of First Nations soldiers in the mid-20th century, and the poor treatment they received upon their return to civilian life in Canada. His accomplishments attracted national media attention during his lifetime and earned him many posthumous tributes, including designation as a national historic person in 2019.

Today on Indigenous Veterans Day we want to celebrate the life of Francis Pegahmagabow. Francis was an Ojibwa from the Perry Island Band in Ontario who enlisted in August of 1914 and was part of the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion that landed in France in 1915 after training at Salisbury Plains.

He was a superior sniper and scout: "His iron nerves, patience and superb marksmanship helped make him an outstanding sniper."
He fought at Ypres, The Somme, Passchendaele and through other locations throughout Belgium and received the Military Medal and two bars for acts of bravery, one of only 39 Canadian soldiers to receive two bars in WWI.

His son said "My mother [Eva] told me he used to go behind enemy lines, rub shoulders with the enemy forces and never get caught."

Happy 30th anniversary to “A League of Their Own," the beloved classic film about the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League! The AAGPBL was founded in 1943 by Philip Wrigley, the owner of the Chicago Cubs, in order to keep baseball in the public eye after many of the male players went overseas to fight during World War II. The hit film starring Geena Davis, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, and Tom Hanks rekindled interest in the league's story with its fictionalized account of one of the league's teams, the Rockford Peaches. Many of the real-life AAGPBL players were thrilled by the film, which told the story of a unique times in their lives. For women like Dolly Konwinski, who played third base for the Grand Rapids Chicks, the league was a dream come true: "I played with the boys in the Chicago neighborhood. I didn't want to play with dolls, so my father got me a ball and a bat. It was such a wonderful feeling."
