FUNCTIONALITY OVER AESTHETICS
I was in a bank some days ago trying to sort out some account stuff. As I was waiting on the queue for one of the tellers to call me up, a beautiful young woman walked in. She was calm and maintained a straight face without letting out a reasonable amount of smile.
I watched her for a while (no, I didnât stare) and observed how beautiful she was and all I could think of was how my wife would be when I get married. Just when I was lost in thoughts, I heard a voice ânext customer pleaseâ a teller said. I heard it the second time and quickly met the guy who was wearing a clean white shirt. At the same time, the lady was called up and asked what she needed to do.
She smiled and said with a gentle voice, âI want to withdraw all my money and move it to another bank, I am tired of your serviceâ. The teller was shocked and asked for her details which she shared.
On seeing her balance, the guy just switched to begging mode o. âMadam, please we are sorry for your experience but please donât close your account, we can help you resolve the issueâ.
Next thing I saw was that two different people were talking with her already and were pleading with her. She kept shaking her head in disagreement and maintaining her gentle tone, she said, âFUNCTIONALITY OVER AESTHETICSâ.
Apparently, she had been trying to make some payments for two days via her internet banking platform at her house and it wasnât going through. The bank upgraded their app and somehow, the app had an issue which made it stop working.
The beautiful woman then said that the older version worked really well for her and she did not have any need to come to the branch.
Meanwhile, this app looks really good. You could use voice activation, finger print, Face ID, share receipts with others and a number of things. However, for some days, even something as simple as a transfer could not be done on the app.
So, I started thinking that even though the app looks beautiful, a top account holder wanted to close her account because she couldnât use it.
This shows that for whatever product or service you are delivering, FUNCTIONALITY should come first. If the product or service fails at its core function then no amount of âBEAUTIFICATIONâ will save it.
So, I say to you âBE BEAUTIFUL BUT HAVE CONTENT BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY, CONTENT (FUNCTIONALITY) IS KINGâ
