What an honour to interview one of our greatest living explorers, Colonel John Blashford-Snell,CBE,founder of the Scientific Exploration Society. A legend in the world of exploration, "JB-S" was the real star of the SES Oscars evening,at the Royal College of Surgeons, being awarded the Lifetime Achievement award. Founder of Operations Drake and Raleigh, "JB-S" opened up the world of scientific exploration and conservation in remote parts of the plant to thousands of fledging pioneers. With over a 100 expeditions under his belt, it was a tough prep for the interview and of course the man is a great raconteur so really I needed only introduce him and press 'start' and we were all instantly transported to wild and perilous parts of the plant, with fascinating insights punctuated by some hilarious anecdotes. Some of the other award winners were hugely impressive, the stuff of Attenborough,
and we all agreed it was quite probably the best SES awards evening yet.

SES EXPLORER NEWS!

THE INUIT WAY launches today! A mesmerising take on Polar travel by SES Explorer, Award Committee member and award-winning researcher Edward Cooper. It is a gripping account of his travels across northwest Greenland, where he spent several months living and hunting with the Inuit. From there, Ed and his teammate venture across the sea ice on to the Canadian Arctic islands. Their quest is to track down a note left by David Haig-Thomas, a British Arctic explorer, nearly a hundred years previously.

The Inuit Way is a fascinating book that will be enjoyed by intrepid travellers, adventure junkies, Polar enthusiasts, and armchair or real-life explorers as well as people interested in the environment, fishing or indigenous communities.

On behalf of Scientific Exploration Society, we would like to express our sincere condolences on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral yesterday. We are deeply saddened by the news and our thoughts are with all members of the Royal Family at this time. As a mark of respect, we will hold two minutes of silence at our next gathering on Tuesday 27th September.

HUGE congratulations to SES Explorer and volunteer Charlotte Austwick who has been named as one of the top 50 Neurodivergent Women 2022!

Charlotte will be delivering our next Explorer Talk - Voices of the Maya on 23 March.

In her talk, Charlotte will discuss her SES-funded expedition which aimed to help contribute towards the survival of Mayan culture and protect its heritage and languages before the impacts of globalisation cause it to become lost and forgotten.

She will share how she worked with a small Maya community in the heart of the Belizean jungle to create illustrated reading books about modern Maya’s daily life, myths, and legends in their own language. She will also discuss her experience of trekking through the Belizean jungle to secret Ancient Mayan caves and witnessing the wraths of 'Xibalba' (the Ancient Mayan underworld).

Echoing SES’s long and impressive history of worldwide exploration and pioneering leadership, it is the Society’s quest to enable the next generation of scientific trailblazers and pioneers with purpose through the Explorer Awards programme.

SES Explorers need to be prepared to take on monumental physical, logistical, and global challenges and share the values of grit, curiosity, integrity and leadership that pioneers like SES Founder and Honorary President John Blashford-Snell exemplify.

Each winner will receive a grant to support an expedition that will focus on scientific discovery, research and conservation, and that will raise awareness of the issues we face today.
