To think of where this journey started could be at various points in my life. Being diagnosed with type one diabetes, the struggle of living with a chronic illness, going to see a counselor for the first time, making the decision to become a counselor myself, choosing to work with the addiction population, and all the events that have unfolded since have been significant events that have made an impact in the work I do as an addiction counselor, mental health professional, and clinical supervisor. Which event was most important?
At some point there was a decision to write a book: and that can be found in the story behind it. It was important enough to dedicate an entire chapter to sharing the story about a resident who came into my office one day and the dialogue that would eventually inspire the creation. The most unfortunate part about this story is discovering shortly after the publication of Addiction & Recovery, the resident who played an important role inspiring the decision to write a book experienced a fatal overdose.
For many of us, the journey with addiction and recovery truly never ends. The ripples of impact were happening way before our time and will continue to cascade when our time comes to an end. Writing the book led to a total of 483 pages; and for people who know me and worked with me in this profession know that it wouldn’t stop there.
This bring us to the question, “Where do you want to go?” I reference the story of Alice in Wonderland where it’s important to know where you want to go in order to identify the best direction to take. For me, creating Talking Addiction & Recovery Podcast was the best direction to go after publishing the book. Areas related to addiction and recovery is a journey of continuous learning, growth, and development for all of us involved. Believing you “know it all” will be the end of the journey. Knowing that “I don’t know everything” will provide you with the opportunity to engage in a journey of discovery and insight.
