Following on from yesterday's post here's Wokingham Festival volunteer Juliet Hurwitt's review of Day 2 of the festival. Loads of great artists again many of which we've featured in our RaW Sounds.Today playlist and feature. We've highlighted those!

Wokingham Festival 2024 - Day 2 - 25/08/2024

A very quick round-up of day 2.

What a difference the rain makes, or to be more precise the lack of it. People arrived early. People visited the covered Wokingham Music Club Stage (WMC) because they wanted to see the bands, and not to shelter from the elements. I bet they were pleased they did with such high-quality acts as Noa who’s only 14 years old, Grace Pounds who’s only 19 years old, Caitlin Lavagna (with guitar accompaniment) a bubbly performer from Wales & Katie Mae with her heartfelt songs> They were the solo singer/songwriters on WMC stage today. I’m always in awe of artists who have the confidence to get up on stage to entertain us, but that’s especially impressive as a solo artist when all the focus is on them! Well done ladies.

There was also a good mixture of bands that included indie rock bands Bone Idle and TV Yellow, then a change of style with a pop and rock infusion from Sour Kix with a female lead singer. The final act was the always popular FLUTATIOUS, best described as flute playing, violin playing, Celtic rock infused with almost everything else.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see all the acts, but I did see that the tent was always full of people who created a wave of movement from the main Trademark Windows Stage (TMW) to WMC stage to watch the performers. Standing room only is always a good sign.

The Trademark Windows Stage (TMW) had a wide variety of acts on today. Hosted by Andy Rowe the first introduction of the day was for Katie Ellwood Music who was returning with a four-piece band and performed her own storytelling songs. Next on were today's first of the covers bands Fleece Lined that started the audience dancing, including Mums, Dads, kids and everyone in-between. The Ariston were an obviously popular band with many fans there to see them. These four musicians brought a heavier sound to the day, and there were some great songs with catchy riffs. I’m sure their following increased after their brilliant performance. Next on was West Street who have only been performing since 2022 but performed as if they’d been together much longer. They were confident musicians, with a very charismatic lead singer who interacted with the audience as if it was second nature. They played a mixture of original material with a few covers thrown in. Then for a classic heavy rock sound with THE COLD BLOODED HEARTS, a four-piece band of experienced musicians who’ve been playing together for nearly ten years, and now joined by young Giselle Isabelle on keyboards. Excellent original songs, which would have pleased any rock fans, of which there were quite a few of in the audience. The Country Chicks UK brought a whole different genre to the day and got the audience stomping along with their metaphoric cowboy boots on to classic country covers. Good fun was had by all. The Cover Up did what the name suggests and played a set full of 80’s hits that were loved by the audience as most of them were still dancing. The headline act for tonight couldn’t get more local than Wokingham based Rila's Edge a five-piece band, playing original material. They’ve been working hard getting their name and music known, which is paying off as there were many of Rila’s Edge t-shirts being worn, and a large crowd still watching. People like me who had heard of them but was seeing and hearing them for the first time. I’m sure everyone was as impressed as I was and look forward to seeing them again.

Days 2 was a much fun as expected, and day 3 is going to be just as good with a more progressive rock theme.

There were many brilliant volunteers helping out at Wokingham Festival last weekend. One of those volunteers, Juliet Hurwitt took time to write a great overview of the event which we thought worth sharing. Among all the great artists appearing over the three days were many that have previously appeared in our RaW Sounds.Today playlist so we've highlighted those. Here's Day 1 with Day 2 & 3 to follow in a day or two.

Wokingham Festival 2024 – Day 1 - 24/08/2024

A very quick round-up of day 1:

Not even the pouring rain could put off the die-hard customers who knew they were in for a good day of live music. Okay, so many didn’t arrive until after the rain mid-afternoon, but they missed out on the wonderful opening acts of the weekend. On the Wokingham Music Club Stage (WMC) was Frankie Bird, a beautiful solo singer/guitarist, both in her singing and writing. The main Trademark Windows Stage (TMW), hosted by Andy Jones from BBC Radio Berkshire again this year, started the acts with the incredibly talented, indie-rock band, Who Ate All The Crayons, who are increasing in popularity every time they play.

This is how the day (and all the festival’s days) was planned, two stages of live, back-to-back music. No clashes, so no need to miss anyone.

Eventually, more people arrived and were treated to a mainly dry day of dancing, music, singing along, and generally having a good time. Everything you expect from a festival.
The bands were a cleverly selected mixture of original material as well as the popular covers.
The WMC stage hosted, local, up and coming bands; Future Calls, Ghost Cat, Violet Origin, RELIANT George Bone - Musician Mackenzie, Áine Deane – all original artists with a few covers thrown in. A varied mixture of solo artists, two, three and four-piece bands. These were all well attended, and this is when you must thank the rain, as many people did go to shelter but then discovered a new favourite band to follow.

The TMW stage continued with TRIM, Nicole Allan, !daft!, The Room, Tara Deane Music, Mr Grey’s Jailhouse Jukebox, and ending the day with Totally Blondie, which I think is self-explanatory who they were a tribute to. If you didn’t already have your dancing shoes on, or in some cases just in bare feet, these bands weren’t going to leave anyone sitting in their chairs for long. A great mixture of styles, and definitely something for everyone. The field was crowded until the final note was played, but if that wasn’t enough dancing for you the evening didn’t end there as the silent disco took over. Every headset was in use as people danced the rest of the night away.

It's great to see that our RaW Sounds.Today feature in Wokingham.Today & Reading Today is getting more and more attention far outside our area! Shows the quality of the music being created here and the quality of the music being played live at local venues and festivals from artists visiting! Last week our Chris Hillman went along to the WCR FM studios to be interviewed for a one hour radio special about the music activities he is involved in. It was on Garry Foster's internationally renowned Unchained radio show!

During the show Garry asked Chris about RaW Sounds.Today and they had a good chat about that and about championing the local music scene!

If you fancy a listen to the show you can listen again athttps://www.mixcloud.com/garry-foster/unchained-22082024-hour-two/ and the RaW Sounds.Today section is about 33mins in.

We are always impressed with artists who can not only create wonderful music, but also work so hard to get their music out there. Dikajee is one of those artists and she’s based in Reading and she has a kickstarter campaign which closes in just over 24 hours from when we post this.

It would be great to see her achieve success with this as it’s near to full funding but not quite there and if it doesn’t get there the album might not happen.

We’d love to see it happen so we can feature a song from the album in our feature so if you fancy supporting Dikajee (we certainly have!) here’s the link.

Our area has certainly produced some great rock artists, many of which are in demand far beyond the local scene. An example is our three additions this week who are all travelling to play at the renowned NVRF - Nene Valley Rock Festival in September. We have Neil Sadler, The Room (also at Wokingham Festival in August) and Predatür (also live at The Facebar, Reading in Oct).

Talking of festivals, there's two excellent ones going on closer to home this weekend with Readipop (Grace Pounds and echobelly (official) from the impressive line up still feature in our playlist) and FiFest (we feature Cast Band who headline tonight, Sat!).

Also still included this week are great songs from The March Violets, SonicWhip, Gemma Rogers music & Echo Chambers - Band, Why are they included? Have a read online or in print in Wokingham.Today & Reading Today to find out.

Another busy week here and more great music to read about and listen to! First new addition is from the brilliant Gemma Rogers music who we saw at a great show at On The Mount at Wasing1759 last week. Second is a very topical song with the election coming up from Reading band Echo Chambers - Band.

The third song is for the outgoing editor of Reading Today & Wokingham.Today newspapers. The wonderful Phil Creighton has been an incredible champion of our feature since we started and of the whole music scene in our area! We wish Phil well for the future with many thanks for everything he's done over the years for the music scene and for the local area in general. The song is a bit of fun as Phil is a Dr Who fan and it's Astralasia's awesome version of the theme.

Also still included this week are great songs from Grace Pounds , echobelly (official), Masquerader, Áine Deane, Phantom Booth, In Albion & Amanda Lehmann. Why are they all in the feature? Have a read in print and online in both newspapers to find out.
