Connectivity and Engagement of Local Governments in BIMP-EAGA
As a spin-off of my engagement with ASEAN in 2017, I have created this page to build on the knowledge and lessons I gained on two ASEAN topics: Ground check on Connectivity in the BIMP EAGA Vision 2025 and Engagement of Local Governent in BIMP-EAGA (Brunei Indonesia Malaysia Philippines - East ASEAN Growth Area).
The Reporting ASEAN fellowship program and media series was implemented by Probe Media Foundation, supported by an ASEAN-Canada project in partnership with AirAsia and in collaboration with the ASEAN Foundation. My participation was approved and supported by Bukidnon State University as part of faculty mobility in the region. Special thanks also to my home news agency, MindaNews.
It caused me to travel and learn around Mindanao cities, established connections on Indonesia, and traveled to Manila for interviews and Bangkok, Thailand and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the media forum.
It allowed me to pursue an ASEAN journalism project covering an economic phenomenon involving Mindanao. It allowed me to learn on two specialization areas I am most engaged - journalism and economics education, in an Asian setting.
For the connectivity strand, I traveled to Davao and General Santos cities to check preparations on the then proposed Davao-Gensan-Bitung (Indonesia) roll on roll off (RoRo) shipping service. I covered the launching of the service by Presidents Duterte and Widodo in April 2017.
For the local government engagement and institutional strand, I met a former Asian Development Bank top honcho who played a crucial role in the formation of the growth triangle. I also met and learned about an economics research group based in Singapore.
Once remote and isolated, the BIMP-EAGA now has a gross domestic product of $287 million in 2019.
I am curious how has COVID-19 changed this development. How has it affected connectivity and local government engagement in the area, too?
At the gist of this, is how did the policy of free trade and regional consolidation impact the people on the ground, like the abaca weavers of Manalog, Malaybalay City?
I hope to find answers for these questions in creating this page.
