Tricks and Treats from Picklehead

Okay, no tricks right now at the Picklehead Mansion high in the Colorado Rockies, but at the end of the month, we're sure to get tricks from the kids around here who come to the front door wearing costumes. Over the years I've had several folks ask when I was going to play in the Kansas City area.

Well, this is last minute, but I just booked a show in Topeka at Abigail's Grill and Bar, 3701 SW Plaza Drive - Topeka, Kansas for THIS COMING FRIDAY NIGHT (September 27th) from 6:30-9:30 PM.

This came about because my most excellent old friend from Topeka, Chris Waters, came to my show this summer at Lake Of the Ozarks. I used to perform at Champion's Barbeque long ago when my oldest son Stephen was attending KU. When I told him I was doing a private show in Shawnee, Kansas on Saturday, September 28th, we worked out having me come back to Topeka.

I've been really pleased with the response for my Calek's Tale books. Lots of them are out there and I'm just getting started promoting.

Many of you commented on how much you like my writing style. That craft was honed over many years writing short stories. This summer, I gathered 21 of them into a full length anthology which went live on Amazon today!

For many years with Faust & Lewis, I did annual spring trips to Sloppy Joe's in Key West, and I used one of those road trips to provide interludes before each tale to keep things moving. There are lots of personal details in those interludes, so I felt like I was taking that 42 hour drive again as I wrote them.

Special notice! It's true that I'm not doing my 'annual' Chicagoland Show this November, but am already looking forward to November of 2025, when I return to Des Plaines to do a show to celebrate 50 years of performing! Sheesh! Good thing I started when I was 2...

But I WILL be doing a special show in Chicago in a couple of weeks, on Saturday, November 21st from 3-6 PM for the Norwood Park Historical Society 'Stems and Steins' fundraiser. They asked me to come in to play for this and probably do my 'Norwood Park' song and poem, 'The Older We Get the Better We Used To Be' song from my Taft High School reunion, along with lots of others.

PLEASE NOTE! This will not be like my usual Chicago shows, because it's outside on the lawn of the Historical Society and there won't be a stage or chairs and I'll be out there singing for the old neighborhood, just like in my grammar school rock band days playing in the garage until the neighbors called the cops...

But it should be fun and I hope to see some of you. Since it's a fundraiser, the tickets are $65, but that includes all the wine and beer you can drink, so it should be festive!

It's been a GREAT summer of shows at Lake Of the Ozarks. On my right is JG, the owner of Shady Gators where I play 4 days a week. On my left is Chubby Carrier https://chubbycarrierzydeco.com, a Grammy winning zydeco artist who has been playing here for 29 years, from when it was Bayou Bill's. Tonight is his final show as he's retiring from the road. Which means, at 19 years t Shadys, I will now be the longest running act! Where did the years go?

Anyhow, Happy Trails Chubby. You are an excellent musician, and more importantly, a gentleman and a Family Man. It's fun seeing your daughter playing washboard with you tonight.

I'm down here for two more weeks starting tomorrow- Monday thru Thursday at Shadys and Saturday at Nautifish. Final show for the summer August 8th at Shadys and August 10th at Nautifish. Sounds like a good excuse for one last road trip to the Lake!

My summer shows have kicked in full blast at Shady Gator's and Nautifish at Lake Of the Ozarks. It's been really great so far, with good crowds and good times. I finish my first two weeks here this Saturday and then come home for about three weeks for lots of family fun. Then I come back for five more weeks here starting on July 8th. I had a summer job in college where I did mostly assembly line work for 8 hours a day at Sun Electric in Edison Park Chicago. This is MUCH better!

A couple of notes:

If you search for Calek's Tale you might see a listing for Book Two that says 'out of stock' or 'limited availability.' That's the wrong link. There was an older test version of the book up on Amazon which you can only archive, not delete, so sometimes a search will show it. Just scroll down to find the right version, which is in stock and should come to you in a couple of days. Reply to this post or message me if you run into any problems.

I'm really excited about the comments and reviews I've been getting so far. The climax of the story is Book Three, which will come out in late May.

And as always, if you like either or both of the books, please leave a review on Amazon, because that really helps for a new project. When all three books are up, I'll start doing a lot of advertising and promotion, so anyone who gets the books now will have first editions before it's a New York Times Bestseller!

A lot of you have asked about Book Two. The picture attached here is the cover, and the book will be released by mid-April, with the climax, Book Three, coming out in mid June.

IN THE MEANTIME! I just had one of my favorite short stories published in All Worlds Wayfarer magazine, an excellent publication based in Washington State. The story is "Sailing Home," which is also the title of one of my fondest songs. I wrote this story back when I was playing in Key West, and there's a lot of personal emotion behind it, with me being on the road all those years performing while my wife and three kids were at home, and with my Mom dying of cancer way back in 1989.
