Durag has several variant spellings, including do-rag, dew-rag, and doo-rag, which can all be spelt with a space instead of a hyphen, or with neither the hyphen nor a space, particularly as durag. According to one derivation, the word should be spelled dew-rag, because dew is a euphemism for perspiration. The New York Times, on the other hand, argues that the correct spelling of the term is durag. The close-fitting cloth cap, wrapped around the top of the head, is worn to promote the growth of long curly/kinky hair, waves, or locks in the hair; to preserve natural oils in the hair (similar to a bonnet); to prevent hair breakage, or to protect hair from shifting while sleeping. Durags are also prominent in African American communities as a cultural fashion statement.
It originated in the nineteenth century when slave women wore head wraps to keep their hair up and out of the way while working. During the Harlem Renaissance and the Great Depression of the 1930s, the durag was employed to keep hairstyles in place. However, throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the black pride movement, durags became a fashion statement among (black and Hispanic) males. The durag was first mentioned in the Akron Beacon Journal in 1966, when it was spelled "Do Rag," and was characterized as "a fabric band worn over the forehead as a sweatband to hold hair in place." Companies such as So Many Waves were credited with producing their version of the durag, dubbed the "Tie-down," in the late 1970s. It became a vital tool for black males, who used it to refine their curl patterns or to keep their hairstyles in place while sleeping.
The durag was only used for practical purposes until the 1990s when it became a symbol of inner-city Black culture. The durag got increasingly flamboyant as the 2000s progressed. The transition of durags from a haircare item to a legit style accessory was most notably popularized by celebrities and influencers such as Jay-Z, A$AP Ferg, Nelly, Rapper Royce Da 5'9, Rihan
It is no secret that Amazon, which started as an online book retailer, has been taking the online
retail industry by storm. The company has expanded rapidly and is one of the most well-known
shopping methods for consumers who want to digitally purchase a massive range of products.
According to the CNBC, “Amazon unseats Walmart to become the No. 1 apparel retailer
in U.S., Wells Fargo says” by Annie Palmer, Amazon beat Walmart in becoming the top apparel
retailer in America. Amazon’s success in the fashion department is related to the pandemic,
which caused customers to shop online rather than traveling to stores. Many of those shoppers
already trusted Amazon, so they started looking to Amazon for fashion. Furthermore, Amazon
has expanded its clothing options in recent years. They now offer more specific and appealing
brands, such as Core 10, a high-quality athleisure brand, and The Fix, which sells trendy shoes
and accessories.

Pharrell’s sneaker comes in an eye-catching shade of royal blue and flaunts the Adidas logo on its tongue tag, which is a much lighter shade of blue. The Humanrace name is also featured across the side of the sneaker in a lively coral hue. While the new sneaker is daring in appearance, there is more meaning behind the product than just a fun aesthetic. Pharrell chose the name “Sichona” for the sneaker because of inspiration from the Dakota tribe.

Naomi Osaka, a champion tennis player, has revealed her latest collaboration with Levi, and she is rapidly expanding her mark in the fashion world. The tennis player, who has collaborated on collections with Nike and Adeam as well as appearing in Louis Vuitton and TAG Heuer advertisements, was featured earlier this year in Levi's "Beauty of Becoming" series.
The denim label announced this week the launch of a limited-edition womenswear collaboration with the tennis player, all crafted from recycled and reused materials. The collection is centered on sustainability, with a mix of upcycled and vintage denim items, providing a fresh spin on classic Levi's designs. Osaka has always been a fashion enthusiast. In the promotion video for the collection, Osaka is quoted saying, “When we were little, me and my little sister would take car rides and drive for hours and hours on end and we would have little fashion design battles and have my dad pick the winner, so it’s always been a thing for us growing up.”

LVMH now owns Tiffany & Co., and they are modernizing the traditional Tiffany & Co. image through more social media promotion and trying to attract a younger target market. Some of their strategies to appeal to a more youthful age group include challenging traditional gender norms by selling engagement rings for men and releasing the controversial “Not Your Mother’s Tiffany” campaign. They are continuing to revamp their image by recruiting Beyoncé and Jay-Z, two of the most successful musicians among Millennials and Generation Z, as the new faces.

Factory closures in Vietnam have also had a significant impact on the footwear industry. Taiwan's Pou Chen, shoe manufacture for Adidas and Nike, and South Korea's Changshin, shoe manufacturers for Nike, both ceased operations last month. In July, Pou Chen halted operations at its largest facility in the country, near Ho Chi Minh City. Vietnam is a major player in the global fashion business. Vietnam has surpassed Bangladesh as the world's second-largest exporter of ready-made garments, according to the World Trade Organization's (WTO) World Trade Statistics Review 2021, published in July. Vietnam's garment exports grew 6.4 percent in 2020, reaching $29 billion in market value.
The Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS) has urged that the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA) push US President Joe Biden to supply vaccinations to Vietnam and other "important partner countries."

Ziggy Chen always catches our attention with his unique designs and edgy styles. We at Volatile had the pleasure of speaking with Federica Tattoli, the PR contact and press office manager for Ziggy Chen. Tattoli was warm and friendly throughout the interview as she gave some insight into Ziggy Chen’s inspirations, processes, and products.
Tattoli explained that the target customers who purchase Ziggy Chen clothing are usually educated adults, some younger adults aged 25-28, as well as many middle-aged adults from 50-55. Ziggy Chen customers also often have a creative side and work as architects, artists, and designers.
Ziggy Chen’s intriguing use of fabrics and textures contributes to the individuality of his outlandish designs. “He studied a lot regarding fabrics and textures. Usually, in every collection, he designs a special pattern for fabric that is made exclusively for Ziggy Chen. So every collection has a special pattern, a special fabric,” Tattoli said. “He loves to use different kinds of fabrics in his work.”

The Athletic Side of Us’ (TASOU) launches new campaign.
Simone Biles, who has gotten a lot of buzz lately for her mental health advocacy, ended her sponsorship with Nike to work with Athleta, a smaller activewear brand for females instead. Athleta has shown support for her decisions and her honesty regarding her mental health. Female athletes are proving that bigger names do not always mean better sponsorships, and this is leading to smaller brands gaining more interest and popularity from athletes.
