Why the MMORPG genre that we love is dying, why do we come back to old games and less developers are making this genre?
Greetings,
Hi it's Owl and will give you my take about why MMORPG genre that we love is dying and why we go back to these games in a private server.
Back in the days, I used to pay to play for a week via 2$ US top up card for one of the most loved MMORPG not only in my country but also in the entire SEA(South east asia) which is ragnarok online.
The world is somehow a sandbox since there are no quests except for the job class you wanted to choose and the world is vast and the bosses are fairly challenging needing a party if you don't have a high tier gear.
There's a lot of monsters and job classes, the world of midgard is but a disneyland for me and my friends, Yes it was grindy but fun when you discover on new ways on how to level up, discover new places that are still unknown to other players or someone to talk with in your guild. There are also guild wars for the very pvp oriented players.
I also played a lot of MMOs besides from ragnarok like MU by webzen, and FF 14.
So the question ask why is the MMORPG genre is dying?
1. Time - A lot of us has a lot in our plates to play an MMORPG, like everyone is busy and we cannot afford to play as much as we can when we were younger.
2. Battle system gets old- Yes there's a lot of mmorpgs battle system becomes stale but there are some MMOs that thrive, this is only a minor factor.
3. Genre hopping- there are players also who are bored with MMOs and of course loved other genres like MOBAs and FPS, etc.
4. Free to play (The most important)-
These games has lot to offer until some companies thought it was good to make a free to play game.
Okay hear me out, free to play sounds awesome and I was enticed by playing a lot of MMORPGS because of this platform since I can play anytime without even paying a single penny.
Though there's a very dark truth behind being free to play. With the birth of free to play comes with it's brother "the pay to win".
Yep you've heard it, "Pay to win"
So you would ask? Why?
We shouldn't forget that these games and servers are needed to maintain and the staffs are needed to get paid for their services, So without the pay to play system (unless the company is as big as bandai japan that has a lot of resources to support the game or sega), the staffs can't be paid enough for their services and without the staffs, the gaming company will die with it's games.
So how did they put the pay to win in these games?
It's by putting items or resources that makes your character stronger compared to those who are really free to play players.
A lot of MMORPG did try not to make it pay to win and make it really free to play like "Fantasy Earth Zero" and "RaiderZ" so that the players will have the best time playing the game without having to pay to play nor pay to win but again without the resources they need to maintain the game died and these MMOs are way ahead of their time.
So IMHO, the solution for this is to make games "pay to play" so both parties (The gaming company and the people who plays it) will produce the win-win situation they need for each other where the developers and game companies focuses on the player experience while the players pay for the efforts of these companies who supports the game and the fun they're having with the game. One example of this is "FINAL FANTASY 14" though WoW Shadowlands is still a good game, it wasn't like it's prime unlike the former which tastes like fine wine as it ages
One could argue, but fortnite, PUBG, TEAM FORTRESS 2 and CS:GO are free and has a lot of players, you're right they have a lot of players and not pay to win but again there come the cheaters who are harder to manage since the pay given is lower than those of who aren't free to play for these types of games and then again these aren't MMORPGs.
MMORPGS focuses on 90% of resource farming and some 10% are skills, but most of the FPS games, they focus more on skills 90% of the time compared to their resources because in these types of games they're not meant to farm items and use it as an advantage against enemies
Some games also that were once pay to play becomes free to play imho panicked because of their competitors. Example of this is when TERA online was pay to play then RaiderZ came in 2012. There was a huge shift because again in my opinion, TERA thought they we're gonna lose against RaiderZ since RaiderZ was in par with TERA when it comes to the combat gameplay to free to play ratio.
Now what happened? RaiderZ died, TERA will come soon if the company stops supporting the game and can't have anymore funds maintaining it.
So why we love getting back to these games even make a private server. My belief is that because of the memories we made in the game and the new adventures, friends, and memories that we can make with other people.
Thank you again for reading this blog and hopefully in the future there would be new kinds of MMORPGs that are fair, fun and memorable. Hoping the best for the players who loved the genre and the companies who are making them.
