To Young Adults,

How Does it feel to become an adult?

I’m not referring to you becoming legally okay to drink alcohol or you finally allowed to buy condoms at the cashier, I’m referring to you recognizing responsibility, maturity and financial capability because even if you’re 25 years old but not capable living on your own then there’s no way you can relate to what I'm saying.

So moving on, how does it feel to become independent? Is it hard growing up? HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BECOME AN ADULT?

What is “adulting” in the first place? Well, according to Oxford Dictionary it is the practice of behaving in a way characteristic of a responsible adult, especially the accomplishment of mundane but necessary tasks.

So, was it hard adulting?

Adulting is the stage where you are capable of making your own money, where you start paying bills, where your decision-making will be tested and where life adjustment takes place.

Some got themselves apartments and some stayed with their parents, some are economically torn between pleasurable things and righteous things, some can’t decide if they would keep their current jobs or they’ll look for a better opportunity and some are getting their heart broken during this stage and some are beginning to understand the fleshly need, for adulting is a phase of adjustment for everything.

As a young adult, there is this pressure of having and keeping a job especially if you’re expected to bring food on the table and pressure is real if you’re part of the “sandwich” situation or about to be part of it. People who belong to this, are the ones supporting their parents while supporting their spouses and kids— Sandwich, they're in between, they're torn between two obligations.

Just imagine how they’re budgeting their income knowing they too, have bills.

Bills for apartment, internet, electric bill and the list goes on, they all sound scary especially to someone who is just starting to pay his own bills. I remember the joy of getting my first salary, unfortunately I didn’t use my money wisely may be because I was young but a decade passed and I’m left with no savings to look at, I used being “sandwiched” as an excuse but honestly, if I only earned every cent I used for buying expensive dresses, cigarette and alcohol then that could accumulate to thousands.

It’s important to be financially organized at a young age, it would be hard to save if you keep choosing leisure over saving for your future.

Mindset and discipline matters.

We are not all blessed with financially educated guardians growing up, not all of us were taught how to save. So given you’re being paid handsomely, there’s a lot of good insurance company nowadays and a lot of financial coaches. Approaching one and be educated by one won’t cost a penny and honestly, I regret ignoring them when I was younger.

Take it from someone who used to say "come what may", treating every occasion as if there will never be one, using sandwich situation as an excuse but can afford a pack of cigarette a day. Before you waste your upcoming years, save as early as your first salary if you can, save if you have a stable income, save whenever you can. Because whether you die young or you grow old, you surely don't want to burden your love ones, well unless you want to be the other bread of the sandwich soon, instead of ending that tradition with you.
