While their reputation as being the “Easter Island Heads” is pretty much set in stone, there is far more to these massive statues below the bust. These titanic totems, named “mo’ai,” were carved by the people of Polynesia between 1250 and 1500 CE. Not only do they have complete bodies buried beneath the ground but the preserved carvings show that they are in a seated or squatting position. All of the mo’ai that surround Easter Island face away from the sea, toward the villages, and are thought to symbolically watch over the island’s inhabitants.
