Read my post with the Pikes Peak Paper that goes in-depth into the 2024 winter season, our transition out of El Niño into La Niña, and what that means for the coming spring and summer:

Colorado weather is well known for its variability, and that standard holds true through the winter season.

Wolf Creek Pass/Ski Resort in Colorado has an incredible 98” snow base currently, and 161” TOTAL snow YTD (year to date) with more snow on the way!

- First image: current look at the Drought Monitor for Colorado. I can’t remember the last time I saw such a large area of Colorado showing NO DROUGHT. Eastern Colorado still struggling a bit though.

- 2nd & 3rd images: a comparative look at the latest high res models’ snow accumulation forecast through about noon Thursday, showing heavy snow accumulations up to 2 feet (possible) over the San Juan mountains of southwest Colorado.

- 4th image: graphic from US National Weather Service Pueblo Colorado showing blizzard warnings for portions of southwest Colorado, including the possibility of snow squalls, which are very intense (yet usually short duration) heavy bursts of snow and strong winds that can cause reduced visibility.

Pretty impressive visualization of the circulation of wildfire smoke around the anomalously strong ridge today (source: NOAA/GSL), meaning that smoky hazy is going to be lingering across most of the state today. The ridge, positioned nearly overhead in western Colorado this morning, will continue to influence our hot and dry weather across most of the state today. Still, some isolated storms will be possible over the San Juan Mountains and Southwest Slope this afternoon, but gusty winds, lightning, and an isolated heavy downpour or two may be possible.

Statewide, daily record temperatures should be approached if not exceeded this afternoon. A Heat Advisory has been issued for portions of the Urban Corridor through 6pm by NWS Boulder. A good day to stay cool indoors if you can, but if you must be outdoors, hydration and sunscreen will be key today!

How about that change in temperature? It feels like a chilly fall day after a cold front moved through Colorado this morning. Current temperatures are hovering in the low 60s for eastern Colorado, and down into the mid-40s and 50s in the western half of the state. While this system is fairly dry, we could still see some light precipitation in the form of snow in the higher terrain, with up to a few inches of accumulation possible above 10,000ft.

There are also freeze warnings in effect from 11pm tonight through 9am Tuesday morning for Yampa River Basin (including Steamboat Springs, Glenwood Springs, Carbondale, etc.) as well as for the San Luis Valley and Del Norte vicinity. Temps are expected to drop into the low 20s overnight into the morning for these regions. Bring those plants indoors, and winterize your pipes!
