KENNEDY MWEENE WINS HIS 14TH TROPHY WITH SUNDOWNS
Chipolopolo goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene last night won his 14th trophy with Mamelodi Sundowns, after defeating Marumo Gallants FC 2-1 in the 2022 Nedbank Cup Final, at Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Rustenburg.
The Brazillians were made to sweat as they faced strong opposition in 'Bahlabane Ba Ntwa' before withdrawing R7 million from NedBank.
Sundowns scored first through Peter Shalulile 33 minutes into the first half, before Junior Dion levelled the matters on 75th minute.
But it was Thapelo Morena who separated the two teams in a dramatic fashion on 120th minute of extra time after coming off the bench to replace Lebohang Kgosana Maboe on 92nd minute.
The 2012 Africa Cup of Nations winner, Mweene had a quite game, as Gallants were shy in front of goal, but of course made one critical save for the team and he now skite with 15 trophies in his professional football career.
Besides the 2012 AFCON, the veteran footballer has won seven league titles, three Nedbank Cup, a Telkom Knockout, MTN 8, CAF Champions League and CAF Super Cup all with Masandawana.
He also won Baymed Cup with Free State Stars in 2006 and that locomotes his gold medals to 16.
[Opinion]
The former goal-minder for Lusaka Celtic, Lusaka Dynamos and Kitwe United has so much experience which would be vital for the upcoming goal-keepers in the country.
If only the Zambian FA and Clubs at Amateur and Professional can be engaging him to have a day discussion or training with not only goalkeepers but defenders, midfielders and strikers it would benefit Zambian football, because goal-keepers are better placed to see the movement of the game and know what these positions do to beat them and get a goal.
We continue to interceed for a day when all of us will work towards one goal and that is to develop Zambian football and that would mean discarding politics from the beautiful game.
I congratulate Kennedy Mweene and Mamelodi Sundowns on winning a trebble this season.
