Two Mamas + A Mustard Seed is a podcast born out of a desperate hope for change. Your hosts are Kisa
Benjamin Oliver Davis, Sr. was the first African American General Officer in the U.S. Armed Forces. General Davis became the first African American to rise to the rank of brigadier general in 1940.
Martin Luther King…
Life giver to the scheme…
Who gave his life for a dream…
For the unity of human beings….
Many know his story as a civil rights activist that preached love and non-violence in the face of injustice. Dr. King let his faith in God and his words be his weapon. Galvanizing likeminded individuals of the day to sit, stand or march with him for the sake of all humanity, for all of us who are created in the image of God.
He had the most powerful of quotes. Quotes that are both poignant and timeless. Here are a few of my favorites:
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
Martin Luther King Jr., a man of peace in a dark world was born January 15, 1929. We celebrate not only his birthday but his legacy the third Monday of January every year. Don’t let this day go by without embracing his legacy by endeavoring to show love and kindness to all.
1 John 4:7-8 (KJV) Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and anyone that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not, knoweth not God; for God is love.
“We're all somewhat courageous, and we're all considerably cowardly. We're all imperfect, and life is simply a perpetual, unending struggle against those imperfections.”
Sidney Poitier, Bahamian born actor, civil rights activist, first black academy award winner who paved the way for many black actors and so much more passed away today, January 7, 2022.
Mr. Poitier was very intentional about the acting roles he took. Although he was often a hero with the characters he portrayed, he often met injustice with forgiveness. This approach was viewed by some as not forceful or direct enough to combat the hatred people of color faced at that time. He knew he was making a difference. He wanted to portray the humanity of black men in a time that didn’t support that truth.
Sidney Poitier was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009. When asked about his contributions as a trailblazer for African American actors he said, “History will pinpoint me as merely a minor element in an ongoing major event, a small if necessary energy,” he wrote. “But I am nonetheless gratified at having been chosen.”
“There comes a point where we need to stop just pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream and find out why they’re falling in.” Desmond Tutu
South Africa’s racial justice advocate, unrelenting challenger of apartheid and peace seeker died Sunday, December 26, 2021.
Archbishop Emeritus Tutu tirelessly worked to tear down apartheid, the system of oppression against the black majority in South Africa, that ended in 1994.
He was the first Black bishop of Johannesburg and first Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town. The bold clergyman used his pulpit as a platform to motivate his audience to be against racial inequity in Africa and globally.
Desmond Tutu also co-authored The Book of Joy with a fellow Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and longtime friend, the 14th Dalai Lama.
Hey Guys!
I had the pleasure of interviewing celebrity chef and Food Network star Darnell "Super Chef" Ferguson back in September, and I couldn't think of a better way to close out Season 3 and 2021 than with this episode. He is the owner of SuperChefs and the Dripping Crab in Louisville Ky.
More than all of the accolades and achievements, Darnell has a heart for the Lord and for people. Be encouraged and inspired by his story. He also gives us a the first scoop regarding his latest endeavor. You don't want to miss it!

Two Mamas + A Mustard Seed is a podcast about faith, hope, and race in America. Two Mamas is hosted by Kisa Hoeltke and Renee Reithel in Louisville, Kentucky.
In this episode I sit down with Junior Bridgeman, a former graduate and U of L basketball player who also had a stint in the NBA playing for the Milwaukee Bucks and the LA Clippers. He and I have a candid conversation discussing family, faith and drive. More than his achievements on the court, his accomplishments as a businessman off of the court are truly remarkable as well.
Ulysses L. Bridgeman Jr. is the owner and chief executive officer of Heartland Coca-Cola Bottling Company, LLC, a Kansas limited liability company which owns and operates a Coca-Cola production/manufacturing facility in Lenexa, Kansas and 17 Coca-Cola distribution facilities sprinkled across the USA’s heartland, including Kansas, Missouri and Illinois. Mr. Bridgeman has personally received many awards, including the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame; Volunteers of America Tribute Award for Outstanding Service to the Commonwealth of Kentucky; John Thompson Foundation Outstanding Achievement Award; Coach John Wooden Key to Life Award and the Kentucky Entrepreneur Hall of Fame.
Please be inspired and encouraged by this episode.

Buckle up for an extremely thought provoking conversation, just in time for what many knew as Columbus day, but now known as indigenous peoples day! In this episode Mark Charles, a man of Navajo descent, and I discuss some "unsettling truths". These truths date back to the 15th century, but continue to infiltrate mindsets today. He has dedicated many years of study to the impact colonialism has had on the Native and African American people. He'll discuss hard traumatic events in history to help educate us.
While we don't share all of Mark's opinions and views, it's so important to hear from different voices and seek to understand parts of our history that we don't often learn about in depth. With that said, don't shy away from this discussion and do your research as well. We like to quote one of our favorite pastors who often says, "eat the meat and spit out the bones". Take that note as you continue to grow and learn. Many of you will be challenged in your thinking, but implore you to dig in to this conversation.

Two Mamas and a Mustard Seed is back! Welcome to season 3!
Renee writing here... this season is going to look a little bit different. I am going to take a bit of a break from the podcast to focus on my family. My day job has become quite busy again, which is great news for a freelancer in the middle of a pandemic! Plus my husband and I have two boys, a senior in high school and a first grader. God has made it clear in many different ways that my focus needs to be on my family during this season of life. I will still be cheering Kisa on and helping out as much as I can but you'll mostly be hearing from my beautiful and incredibly talented co-host throughout season 3.
With that said, pull up a seat for Kisa's first conversation of season 3. She and her good friend Dr. Torie Williams, a special education director in Dallas, Texas, talk about a term so many of us have heard recently, ACEs, which stands for Adverse Childhood Experiences. What exactly does ACEs mean? How do these traumatic childhood experiences impact the rest of a child's life? This is a good conversation. You'll learn a ton. I know I did!

Part two of Albert Tate on the church is available now! In this episode we discuss biblical justice, social justice and trigger words. Author Jo Saxton says, "words create worlds". This is so true. Pastor Tate reminds us that it matters how we love!
Romans 12:18 says, "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." Let's think about how we are loving our brothers and sisters, and how we are unifying by living peaceably with one another. Being a peacemaker requires action, not just sitting back. It's what we are called to do!

Well, it's Friday, ya'll. We've made it through another very heavy week in America. At Two Mamas and a Mustard Seed, even in the midst of the storm, even when our boat is sinking in a sea of tragedy, we put our hope in Jesus. And we stay in the race even if our eyes are blurry from the tears! We stay committed to justice on this side of eternity as we weep. Don't give up, friends. His unfailing love is OUR HOPE.
"May your unfailing love be with us, LORD, even as we put our hope in you." Psalm 33:22
Ya'll! This is just a snippet of a really good conversation Kisa and Renee had recently. We had such a fun, light-hearted, and at times serious, time recording Episode 23 for you guys. Even in the middle of the chaos, our hope remains.
We also reflect on season 2 so far and some of our favorite moments. We have two more amazing interviews left in the Listen To series. The series will be back April 19! In the meantime, catch the full conversation, we are calling "Our Hope STILL Remains" on Apple Podcast, Spotify, or wherever you may get your podcasts. You can also catch this conversation on Envision Radio April 20 at 11 a.m.
