When the Supreme Court made a decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, it led to a rise of furious pro-choice Americans, many of which were a part of the youth population Generation Z. Roe v. Wade was barely at its 50th anniversary when it suddenly got removed and Gen Z or other young American populations have never experienced life without this huge part of American history. As a reaction to such an event, the younger population started to use social media, especially TikTok, to spread their thoughts on this decision. Although the vast majority were against the Supreme Court’s decision, there was a percentage of the younger population who supported this decision and also spread their opinion on social media, creating an argument between the two sides.

Whenever rap is discussed amongst critics, a common consensus is that Kendrick Lamar is one of the best rappers in our generation. And with his latest album drop, Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers, it has been proven once again. Growing up in Compton, California, surrounded by gang violence and poverty, Kendrick used that as inspiration to then fuel his writing in his first series of mixtapes back in the early 2000s. In July of 2022, Columbia University was removed from the 2022 U.S. News Best Colleges ranking, instead placed as an “unlisted” institution. This shocking action resulted from Columbia’s inability to substantiate its data regarding the 2021-2022 admissions cycle. Columbia’s removal has called into question the accuracy of past rankings and has created new controversy regarding the issue of prestige within the college admissions process.

“Cancel culture” describes a movement to hold public figures or corporations accountable for exhibiting offensive behavior. This is done by expressing disapproval and contributing social pressure to the guilty party. Its goals include deplatforming an individual or group and bringing attention to wrongdoings. But it is a toxic system for a few reasons. These include encouragement of cyberbullying, the selectiveness of who to “cancel” and the lack of room to grow from mistakes within the system. Every year, many people look forward to watching the Met Gala, and seeing their favorite celebrities dress in the year’s theme. This year’s Gilded Glamor theme was put in place to acknowledge the late nineteenth century, which was a revolutionary time. Many celebrities hit the mark with this theme, however, many were not pleased with internet star Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala dress. The dress, worn by Marilyn Monroe in 1962 , was repurposed for Kim to wear at the Met Gala. Many claimed that she took the value away from the dress, and she was not the suitable candidate for the dress. It’s safe to say that the choices of some Met Gala participants aren’t ones many are fond of, and fashion should be a time for people to express themselves, and come together on the Met Gala night.

On July 23rd, 2022, the World Health Organization(WHO) declared the global monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern(PHEIC), the highest state of alert the WHO can place on a virus. On July 21, 2022, an emergency committee gathered to decide whether to put the monkeypox outbreak on high alert since many countries, who historically have not reported monkeypox, have confirmed thousands of cases. According to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhadom Ghebreyesus, the monkeypox virus meets the criteria for a state of global emergency due to rapid transmission rates, new means of infection, and the general lack of knowledge and research. Along with the PHEIC decision, Ghebreyesus issued an international recommendation for countries to focus on efforts to halt transmission, providing aid to hospitals and clinics, and managing international travel.

In the United States, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) has begun diagnosing the first cases of monkeypox in children. In addition to the diagnosis, the CDC is recommending vaccination for people who have been exposed to or have high risk of being exposed to monkeypox and other prevention methods. In addition, the CDC updated reporting guidelines and treatment plans for hospitals and clinics. As of today, there are 2,981 confirmed cases of monkeypox in the United States and 16,836 cases internationally.

Throughout the United States, schools, stores, and other public areas are devastated by mass shootings. The cause of these shootings is rooted in the lenient gun laws throughout the country. These laws are what have caused 79% of homicides in the United States to be caused by gun violence. The only way to bring this number down? To work towards a safer country and get rid of mass shootings being mentioned in the news every other day? By implementing stricter gun control laws. The conversation surrounding the climate crisis has grown insurmountably in recent years. In first-world society, it is a significant factor in political agendas, corporate businesses, and everyday citizens. But the majority of the world is being left behind, uneducated, and unable to contribute to correcting the climate crisis. The first step in remedying this is increasing the availability of translations regarding scientific texts, the majority of which are in English. The small community of Uvalde is currently going through a lot of grief following the recent gun shooting. Just a few days after the shooting, the National Rifle Association held its convention, where the need for extra gun legislation was discussed. Many people viewed the meeting as insensitive, and protests were held against the NRA during the meeting. Later, the decision was made that there would be no additional restrictions regarding gun circulation. Critics think that the NRA is selfish and inconsiderate. China has been planning an invasion of Taiwan for months now, staging sophisticated drills, and building up its military power are two of them. However, it will not be as easy as it seems for China to have a successful invasion. Taiwan also has been aware of a possible invasion and has been preparing for the worst-case scenario. Although many are worried Taiwan’s preparation for the possible invasion is not enough to protect it against China, especially because the number of armed forces may give China an advantage, Taiwan won’t be alone. The U.S. has promised to defend Taiwan in the case of an invasion.
