Going to see Barbie on Friday.

Feeling a tiny bit of FOMO about not participating in the Barbenheimer double feature craze, but right now I'm also not feeling like hanging out in a movie theater for five hours. 🤷‍♂️

One of my coworkers started talking to me about the Purge movies, and asked me if I like them. I said, "I liked the first Purge movie."

The conversation had already devolved into an Abbott and Costello routine before I figured out how it had gone so wrong.

RIP Marilyn Eastman

December 17, 1933 - August 22, 2021

Marilyn Eastman was best known for her performance in the 1968 horror film Night Of The Living Dead. It's easily one of the best and most natural acting performances in the film. She played Helen Cooper, the much more sympathetic half of a couple who spends most of the movie arguing. She and Karl Hardman, who played Helen's other half Harry, were business partners, and at least eventually a couple in real life. The two improvised much of their own dialogue in the film, including her line, "We may not enjoy living together, but dying together isn't going to solve anything."

While she was best known for her acting in the film, she actually performed many roles behind the scenes as well, which has barely been mentioned in the articles about her death. One of the interesting and inspiring things about low budget films like this is that many of the people involved perform multiple roles in the production. Everyone's a renaissance man, or renaissance woman, in the case of Eastman.

She and Karl Hardman, who ran a film and sound studio, provided sounds used to create the electronic soundtrack of the film.

Tom Savini (Dawn Of The Dead, Day Of The Dead) was originally going to do the makeup for Night Of The Living Dead, but he was unavailable due to serving in Vietnam at the time. Eastman instead got the job of makeup artist. She also performed uncredited as one of the more memorable zombies (or ghouls) in the film, who eats an insect off a tree. I remember watching a black & white zombie movie with my family when I was young, and being freaked out because of how real it seemed. I remember I was particularly frightened by a closeup shot of a zombie at a tree. My mother explained to me that it was all pretend, and that the zombies were just actors wearing makeup. I've never known for sure, but I believe it was that shot of Marilyn Eastman's insect-eating ghoul in Night Of The Living Dead. Eastman did her own makeup for the scene.

For anyone wondering, the Friday The 13th movie I watched on the big day was Friday The 13th Part VII - The New Blood [1988], where Jason Voorhees fights a surprise birthday party and a girl that has psychokinesis. It's pretty good.

I hope everyone had a good Friday The 13th! Here's my VHS tapes of the first seven Friday The 13th movies.

I've never seen George Romero's The Crazies [1973], so I got it for this Halloween season. I got the Arrow Video blu-ray, but it has a reversible cover, and I can't decide which to use. Which do you like better? The old theatrical poster (left), or the newer artwork (right)?

Phase 4 is trending on twitter, and I'm just so happy this 1970's killer ant film is finally getting the recognition it deserves.

I'm just kidding. I know y'all are talking about the MCU, but the Saul Bass film Phase IV [1974] is fantastic. (Insert Ant-Man joke here.)
