“The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death” (Rom 8:2) Here brethren lie deliverance through Jesus Christ; the liberty to the captive which the Spirit brings. God brings us first to the end of self, to the fact that though we have been striving to keep his commands, we’ve failed continually. When we have acknowledged to that in us lies no strength to overcome sin, he then shows us that in the Holy Spirit we have the power of obedience,
the power of victory, and the power of purity.

God works in us to will, and He is ready to work in us also to do, but many Christians have failed to grasp this great truth. They think because they have the will to obey the commands of God, it is enough, and that now they are able to do. This is not so. The will in the believer is a permanent gift, and an attribute of the new man. The power to do is not a permanent gift, but must be each moment received from the Holy Spirit. It is the man who is conscious of his own impotence as a believer who will learn that
by the Holy Spirit he can live a holy life. This man is on the brink of that great deliverance; This is one of the secrets of the Spirit Life

There are three states the believer passes through before he comes to the point where he makes the cry of “who shall deliver me from this body of sin”.

1. At the point where he receives the spirit life, he comes to that point where he delights to do the will of God with all he has, but he discovers that sin is a power that’s working in him that is not himself “It is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me” (Rom. 7:17): that is the first stage a believer passes through.

2. The second stage is rolls in when the believer even after acknowledging that he has a renewed will to do what is right discovers that the will alone is not enough. We are often told that if we’re determined and disciplined, you can perform what you will and overcome any challenge you come across. But this man, as determined and disciplined as he was still made the confession that: “To will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good, I find not” (Rom. 7:18). After conversion a man begins to do his best, and he fails; It is in the course of this struggle that there comes to us this sense of our utter sinfulness. God allows that man to strive to fulfill the law that, as he strives and wrestles, he may be brought to this: “I am a regenerate child of God, but I am utterly helpless to obey His law.

3. Last of all, “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” (Rom. 7:24). This believer who bows here in deep contrition is utterly unable to obey the law of God. On his own, he has tried but any time it seems like he is gaining victory, falls into sin again. He is utterly unhappy and miserable is deeply wretched because he feels he is not obeying his God. He says, with brokenness of
heart: “It is not I that do it, but I am under the awful power of sin, which is holding me
down”. This experience is one faced by many believers, but the next verse provided the answer and the help that was needed: “I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” From that he goes on to speak of what that deliverance is that he has found. This is the path by which a man can be led out of bo***ge into the glorious liberty of the Sons of God.

“O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank
God through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 7:24, 25).

These are the words of a man who has discovered that in himself lies no power to overcome his inherent nature. In the previous verses, he described how he had struggled and wrestled with everything that he had to obey the laws of God, and had constantly failed. This has been the quagmire of many believers who have received the spirit life. The fact that they want to obey the will of God but still find themselves constantly falling back to sin; that’s what made him lift up the cry “… who shall deliver me from this body of sin” (Rom 7:24). Many believers have come to this point where they cry for help because they’ve tried all they could and yet they still find themselves on the ground again: Who can help us out of this mess!!!

OVERCOMING

One of the major experiences a believer has from the time he receives the spirit life, has been the challenge of dealing with sin in his life. Although this believer has come to understand that by the sacrifice of Jesus, that he is dead to sin and also the fact that he should not sin seeing what sin has cost him before he received this life. The believer constantly finds himself at a loss and may at times begin to doubt the influence of this life on him.
Join us this week as we look at the provisions and prescriptions made by the spirit life to overcome the hurdles addictions and besetting sins.

NB: We suggest that we read through the 7th and 8th chapter of Romans before the teaching commences .
