In honor of #nationaldeafhistorymonth , we thought it would be appropriate to share the ASL name signs for our characters in the upcoming sci-fi novel "Fatal Flaws", released everywhere on May 9th, 2023!
One of the main characters, Sammy, is Deaf and communicates in ASL, primarily with her best friend and roommate Ada who also acts as her interpreter. Name Signs are a common way to identify people without fully spelling out their name with the ASL alphabet. They commonly reflect the person's character, personality, or another identifying trait of the person.
For example, Sammy is a graphic designer and artist so her name sign is the letter S in ASL combined with the sign for "art"
For Ada, since her name is already fairly simple to spell in the ASL alphabet, she just spells it out.
Gates's unique name allows him to adopt the ASL sign for gates, but modify it slightly to indicate the "G" in ASL.
And as for Louis....well the girls established his name sign since he doesn't know ASL and they chose a less than kind nickname combined with the letter "L" for his name sign that matches his personality. He actually has two name signs due to the variations allowed for this nickname but you'll have to read the book to find out what the exact nickname is.
