Day 4 - the final day of the mural!!
22-26 hours, 4 days, 8ft x 24 ft.
Thank you Edison School of Innovation! And thank you to everyone else who connected us, who brought me food and kept me company, and encouraged me.

Day 3 of the middle school mural at Edison School of Innovation out in Glendale!
I only got a few hours in on Saturday but I tried to make them count by doing the gears - a part of the ESI logo - and the Edison gramophone. And dancing a lot because no one was around.

Day 2 of the middle school mural at Edison School of Innovation! I got further along in the process than I expected , and took a little break to look around the school garden beds.

I taught at a new place yesterday with some amazing kiddos and staff, and only had the sponge painting of the poinsettias (left) ready to teach.
But the students flew through it and were totally done and cleaned up in about 20 minutes! Luckily, the center I taught at had tons of other materials, and we were able to put together things for the construction paper craft (right) to finish out the class.

Two more pet portraits!

Here's what I've been doing to make all of these:

I use a photo reference of a pet and alter it very slightly digitally. I'll increasing the saturation of the color and play with the lighting, making edges sharper and the shadows more clear. That's all I change about the original photo.

The bright colors are from eyeballing the photo and saying, "eh, it's sort of orange-brown but it would look cooler as pink" or "that black has some purple tones to the edges, so the darkest parts are all going to be blue and purple."

Typically (though not always) a warmly-lit photo (think of reds and yellows in the lighting of the room) will result in a pink/orange/purple final picture, and a cool-lit (think of blues) will result in a green and blue final product.

I only ever use black on the eyes, nose, and mouth to draw attention and make the pet's expression stand out. I also use black pen to outline the whole pet, then finish with a white marker outline to make it stand out from the busy background.
