Sometimes it’s just a mindset shift.

Try it once this week. When you find yourself saying something discouraging or negative, change your words around. There’s always a positive way to rearrange our thoughts.

Memos are used pretty frequently within companies. Here are a few examples of when you could need a memo:

• Your boss tells you to send one
• Time off requests (depending on policy)
• Paperwork requests
• Meeting requests
• Work related incident reports
• Schedule change request
• Policy/procedure changes
• Professional announcements

1.) Fill out all portions and questions on the application as accurately and clearly as possible.

2.) Include all required attachments (such as a resume or cover letter).

3.) Do an overall check of your final documents, checking for things like correct grammar, spelling mistakes, etc.

4.) Before submitting, double check that you’ve met the required criteria the company is looking for in an applicant and for the position.

It’s okay to not take a job because the hours would be terrible for your family.

It’s okay to leave a company because you feel like your skills and experience deserve more pay.

It’s okay to not apply or interview for a job that your parents think you should if you know you’ll hate it.

It’s okay to leave a job that is not fulfilling you.

It’s okay to decline a job offer after learning more details about what the position actually entails.

It’s okay to do what is best for you.

Make sure you always have a resume and cover letter template you can easily access to edit. It saves you so much time when you sit down to job search and apply.

Another thing worth noting is to pay attention to any deadlines companies post with job openings. You want to be sure to apply before the last day the job will be posted (the sooner the better) and you want to be sure you apply in the exact manner they request (online, in person, etc).

I think our society and the way it’s set up often makes people feel guilty for things like being sick, having family emergencies, needing a personal day, doctor appointments, or even taking our full lunch hour.

But like this person said in their post, time off for those kinds of things (no, not all jobs but a good majority) is something that your job agreed to give you. It’s important that you take care of yourself and your family by using your benefits when needed.

You can’t help a company to the best of your potential if you aren’t taking good care of yourself first.

On time is late. 👇🏻

It’s nice to see applicants excited and prepared for their interview. It makes employers see you value their time and company. It also shows them you are punctual.

Arriving a few minutes early vs right on time also allows for unforeseen set backs (traffic, restroom use, last minute overview of your portfolio, etc) and for you to feel more comfortable in the environment prior to the start of the interview.

It’s all about simplicity and saving time.

If you type something up that has all of the important information a reference might need to know about you and send it to that person (right after you ask to list them first), it makes the process so much easier for them. When they get the email or phone call from the company you applied with, they won’t have to sit there on the line thinking of how many years you worked together or what your last job title was. They can just glance down at the sheet you provided them.

As with anything else, it doesn’t have to be fancy and it doesn’t have to include everything under the sun. It’s just a nice gesture that shows you appreciate their time and are thankful they agreed to be a reference for you.

If you need help with figuring out what info or questions they might need to know about you, check out my new template I just posted on my Etsy tonight. It’s very basic and easy to use. It also has FAQ to help them prep one step further if they wish.

Just a friendly PSA to always be yourself during job interviews….but perhaps know when to tune it down a bit, unlike Tammy. 😅

What a great reminder of what (and who) we are truly working for in this life.

Don’t let greed win your heart by working for a company that doesn’t fill you up with anything but money. If you find yourself in a career situation where God isn’t welcome, either invite him to your table anyway or leave it. If you find yourself in a career situation that has you making decisions God wouldn’t be proud of you for, leave it. There are plenty more out there. It doesn’t matter how much it pays or how many vacation days it gives you. It doesn’t matter what title you have or what social status that comes with it.

No job is worth your soul.

Welcome to “Try This Thursday” 🤍

Each Thursday I will be sharing tips on things to try when it comes to the application process, interviews, or just general mindset shifts that we all need from time to time.

For today’s tip we are focusing on how to take a statement that can easily come across as negative and turn it into something a bit more positive for your future employer to hear.

This is so simple to do.

If you aren’t sure what I mean by a letter of recommendation, it is when you ask someone of whom you’ve had some sort of professional experience with (a co-worker, a teacher, someone you have worked for before, etc) to write a brief letter on your behalf which explains why they think you’d make a valuable asset to the company you are applying with.

I think sometimes applicants don’t bother to do this step of the application process for various reasons (it’s extra work, they don’t want to bother anyone, they aren’t sure if anyone will say yes, etc). I’ve been asked to write a handful of these letters for people in the recent past and I felt honored they chose to ask me. If you ask someone and they say no, it’s not the end of the world though. You thank them anyway, move on and ask someone else until you get a few to say yes.

Keep an eye out for new posts coming that show you how to approach someone to ask them for this letter, what to say and how you can help the process be fast and simple for them.

Sometimes to begin a new journey, you must first end a current one.

Resigning from your employment can be really stressful (been there done that), especially if you’ve been with the company for a while. Here are a few things to keep in mind when and if this becomes a necessary step in your future:

• Always give 2 weeks when possible.

• Always give a written notice.

• Above all, always be kind.

Often times (not always) people leave their place of employment because they are unhappy in one way or another. Even if this is so, you should always leave on good and kind terms. You never know if you’ll want to go back one day, if you’ll work for a sister company, if your future employer will call your past employers for a reference, etc.

A resignation letter doesn’t have to be fancy or lengthy. You don’t need to explain your every thought or reason for your decision to leave. Just keep it simple, professional and with any information that you feel is important for the employer to know.

I’ve created this ready to go simple template (available on Etsy - link on profile) where you can plug in your own information to make the process faster and feel less stressful. Feel free to keep any/all of the wording I’ve written or change it completely. 🤍

24/01/2022

Here’s a few of my top pet peeves I had when interviewing applicants or reviewing the interviews of applicants. I can say I have heard these same complaints from fellow coworkers who did interviews as well as other employers throughout the years.

• If you complain about your current or previous job or boss, this leaves an immediate negative impression. Employers will likely think you are often involved in conflict at work or are someone who is never happy. They will also assume if you’re willing to talk badly about other bosses you will likely do the same about them one day.

• A huge part of landing a job is going to be based on your experience and skills, sure. But another unspoken part of that decision is just simply if you’re likable. No one wants to hire someone they can’t see themselves enjoying being around every week.

• Of course this opportunity will be great for your family. If it wasn’t going to be, why on Earth would you be sitting across from this employer? It’s not that employers don’t care about their employees and their families at all. It’s just honestly not a good answer for why you want the job or feel it would be a good match. Employers want to know what aspects of the job excite you the most and what areas you feel you can make a big impact in.

• You have a pretty good idea if the job you are interviewing for seems like a good fit for you - why else would you be interviewing? But sometimes there are things you don’t know yet (hours, benefits, days off, job duties, etc). Employers want a chance to get these things explained to you and have you understand the full role of the job before you say you’ll take the position right away. They want to know you are paying attention to them, considering if the position will actually work out for you and not being hasty in your decision making. Don’t just say you want the job solely based on something like the pay.

23/01/2022

One of the reasons it can take so long to fill out an application or complete a resume is because it’s hard to remember every single start and end date of every job we’ve had (especially if you’ve been a part of the workforce for several years).

So set some time apart before you need that info and open up a Google doc. I recommend inserting a table and typing in the following info: Company name and contact info, your position with that company and a few duties you had, start and end date of employment, and maybe even your reason for no longer being employed. You will need all of this information at some point in your application process.

Save yourself some time later on so you can apply even faster by doing a little work ahead of time.

22/01/2022

Let’s break these down a bit more.

1.) If hired, this paperwork can be retained in your personnel file. Your employer and/or HR can refer back to this file at any time. For example, if you were to be considered for a promotion one day they could look back and see you actually set that goal for yourself a year prior or whatever the case may be. Another example might be if you were to ever leave a company and apply elsewhere then HR could examine your file for reference purposes (depending of course on which state you live in and what laws/rules are set in place at that company).

2.) Leaving something physical in hand that showcases who you are, your talents, experience and goals is never a bad idea. And it might just be the thing that keeps you at the front of their mind when making a hiring decision.

3.) Let’s be real - interviews can feel overwhelming and scary. You might rehearse in the mirror or the car seventeen times before the interview, but your nerves might end up making you forgetful when asked questions. Having an organized file on hand that answers everything an employer would ever want or need to know about you is sure to automatically calm your nerves and is a backup for just in case you forgot to say something you wished you would have later.

4.) I recommend bringing at least two identical copies of your portfolio to an interview, if not three. One for each person conducting the interview. This makes them be able to focus on you still and not try to share or take turns reading over your paperwork. This shows them you’re considerate, prepared and on top of things. It might even save you having to answer some questions if they find them already answered on paper.

5.) If anything else, this serves as experience and practice. You will learn as you do it what you felt like went good or bad with it. You might even receive feedback about your portfolio during or after an interview if hired or not selected. If you don’t receive any feedback, don’t feel shy about asking for some.
