**POSSUMS INFEST MAIN STREET WHITESBURG**
Whitesburg, KY — Onlookers we’re shocked when on this Monday morning, while businesses were closed observing the Memorial Day holiday, a horde of possums seemed to take over Main Street.
Local resident Todd Crabtree claimed that he saw upwards of twenty or so possums on the sidewalks and blocking traffic as he drove by. ”Darn things have just go too comfortable. People has been a feeding them suckers and they just got too darn comfortable.”
Environmental specialists are saying these large gatherings of Kentucky’s only marsupial are a completely normal occurrence in mid to late spring when possums give birth to their young. When the mothers need to feed their large litters they often turn to cities to find nourishment.
Crabtree and others got out of their vehicles to herd the animals out of the road but were forced back into their cars due to the fear of getting bit. Crabtree stated “Darn things worse then them ducks at Fish Pond. Can’t drive five feet down there without one of them mallards tryin’ to shove themselves under your tire trying to get bread.”
Some residents are calling for the possums to be removed or even exterminated. Others however, have a different opinion. Margie Shoemaker, who works in town, stated “The possums were here first and I think they’ll benefit the area. Maybe make them a tourism attraction like the elk.”
