PART THREE: FINALE

"Dust settles on the desert floor and on the mess of car wreckage, bullet casings and fresh lemon peel. Underneath her finger nails are stained yellow. The citrus juice stains on her clothing are growing larger and they gather in pools on the ground. She won. The Prodigal Sun turns to the sunset and drops her weapon. She smiles widely, and as the light wraps itself warmly around her lemon peel grin, she falls".

A s*xy last minute addition to Spread 005: The Yellow Pages is a poster designed by Mairead Mullan. There are still some posters left. All previous orders will receive a poster. In Dublin has an illustrious history as a launchpad for designers and journalists looking to cut their teeth with a magazine that made its own rules. In the late nineties, In Dublin was censored for publishing paid for advertisements for es**rt services, and it miraculously came back under a new guise until 2004. Its fast and loose reporting and production style made it an attractive place for people to work. In this issue an anonymous former art director talks about what it was like to work there. Jean (a name we have given her) was art director of In Dublin in the mid 1990s and designed several covers and spreads, some of which she has generously shared with us for this issue. It was a pleasure to speak with her and one of my favourite journalism stories ever is the legend of Rory Sandal, chief investigative reporter of In Dublin, which she reveals in her interview.

We got to indulge ourselves in this issue by interviewing the creator of BrandNewRetro, Brian McMahon (pictured below), who has spent years curating an online archive of vintage imagery from Irish magazines. He also ran a fanzine with his brother called Too Late in the 70s and enjoyed some success as a bass player with post punk band The Scheme. He speaks to us about the importance of magazines in Irish society pre-internet and pre-digital, and how the style and production of magazines like Spotlight changed as fashion moved on. He has also shared some of these advertisements and magazine covers with us for this issue.

Katy is a copywriter by day and moonlights as a fiction writer and poet. Her work has been published in Crannóg, The Ogham Stone, Crossways and 2 Meter Review. Diarmuid is a graphic designer and illustrator, whose work has been previously published by Spread. Through the use of unorthodox materials and repurposed imagery, he creates work which is both playful and physical. Together, they have turned an ordinary product of capitalism into something poetic.

Neave is a designer and illustrator currently based in Dublin. Her work focuses on figurative portraiture and exploring soft colours with subtle nods to folklore and fairytale. She is afraid she is growing up too fast. We love her illustration that plays upon the theme so beautifully, bringing fantasy together with real world experiences.

"On the run from Las Vegas police and a smooth talking blackjack dealer, The Prodigal Sun graces our cover for one last throw of the dice before her inevitable, spectacular face-off with fate".

Alongside illustration, essay and mixed media from contributors, Spread editors weave their own interpretations. We're melting with joy over this issue and cannot wait to share it with you.

It's always a bit surreal to look back on past issues of Spread to see the final product. Our previous issue, New World, is filled with amazing contributors. It is also fundraising for Jaja Studios Stoneybatter where 50% of sales on Bandcamp will go towards helping JaJa in their mission for a new low cost studio space for artists in Dublin. We're over halfway to our goal of €500 which will help both us and JaJa keep doing what we're doing.

If readers remember, we had a chat with JaJa for the launch of Spread 002: Data last summer and heard about their great work. We hope that our small contribution can help them reach their goal for a much needed space for people to create, perform and connect in a city whose design seems to be squeezing people out of viable spaces for creative work.

To support JaJa and ourselves, you can:
1. Purchase a copy of Spread 004: New World + badges/sticker bundle: https://spreadzine.bandcamp.com/merch/spread-004-new-world-limited-pre-order-with-poster-sticker-and-badges-50-donation-to-jaja-studios

Sketches

Olivia Murphy is a visual artist and graduate from LSAD based in Cork.

"My art is a lot of portraiture whether it's realistic or completely fictional. I like the morphing, editing and alienation that comes from my artwork. Art is an escape from reality and allows you to gain new perspectives on the world. Currently I'm studying for a masters in innovation through design thinking, which is a human based creative problem solving course. I want to gain better networking skills and try to create a tighter connected artistic community within Ireland that promotes the rich culture of arts that is present and still thriving".

Title: Meh

Dawn graduated from LSAD in Print Contemporary Practice in 2020.
Her work is born out of an exploration of inherited family memorabilia, where she manipulates film photography that her late Grandfather Arthur captured. Dawn's work is a retaliation against the traditional customs bestowed upon the women in her family and she collaborates with the past to recount and narrate the past retold in her expressive style.

"I printmake using acetone transfer as my primary method. I am drawn to its qualities of preservation, tactility, immediacy and depth. Through my practice I have augmented past realities and rearranged photographs through physically drawing, painting, collaging, cutting and layering over the works to reinvent old forgotten worlds".

Dawn's mesmerising work can be found in the next issue of Spread. Pre-orders for Spread 004: New World are now open: https://spreadzine.bandcamp.com/merch

Title: ‘Portrait of a Fascist’, oil on canvas board, [2020] 25 x 20 cms.

Declan attended art college and exhibited for a period before working as a lecturer and a curator of exhibitions in director roles in galleries and museums in Ireland and the UK, and in third level education.

"In my recent work fragments of images from press and media are collaged as a starting point for drawings and paintings. The portrait here - the particular fascist portrayed - is the N**i General, Irwin Rommel, as a reminder from the past, with additional references to destruction, to nature and the fragmentation of a point of view in Cubism".

Title: ‘Abyss’ Ready-to-Wear

AWNY is a textile artist and recent graduate from Fashion Knitwear & Textiles in LSAD. This collection is a ready to wear continuation of her graduate collection ‘Abyss’ . Through textiles AWNY narrates the story derived from Anne-Louis-Girodet’s painting ‘Deluge’,1806. It is a Romantic Art painting portraying a man struggling to save himself and his family from a flood.

Romantic art captures an arduous moment in time but frames it in a statuesque, regal form. It portrays the hardships as beauty, the turmoil as a performance. 'The tension of the rope reflects the gripping of hands and the digital prints mirror the relentless waves flowing into the abyss.

AWNY favours an androgynous silhouette as a canvas to showcase her pieces, but they are intended for all genders and are crafted with each client in mind.

Readers can view this collection in the next issue of Spread, coming very soon.

Textile designs from Martha McLoughlin.

"These patchwork tops and trousers are made from fabric that I got digitally printed from my own photographs. I enjoy planning photo shoots and editing the images afterwards to create an otherworldly experience".

Martha is a textile designer based in Cork and a graduate from LSAD where she studied Fashion, Knitwear and Textile Design. A self-described hoarder of scraps, yarns and spray-paints, she knits and creates her own fabrics, and she describes her garments as a chaotic collâge of textures and prints. Martha is greatly inspired by street wear and the raw, grittiness of cityscapes.

A gorgeous collection. Readers can view her designs in our upcoming issue, Spread 004: New World.

Title: “I'm Dreaming”

Caoimhe is studying an MA in Gender, S*xuality and Culture at UCD. She is interested in exploring the power of short stories and poems and her writing pays attention to the everyday, the details and feelings sometimes overlooked, but that signify how we navigate our relationships with ourselves, each other and society.

There are just TWO copies of our previous issue, Spread 003 available from The Library Project. Spread (zine)

In 2019, Lazer Guided Reporter launched a new Dublin-based zine, Spread. A collaborative project between Yvonne Kiely (music journalist) and Mairead Mullan (visual artist), Spread is an accessible new space for conversations about music, s*x and DIY culture in Ireland, published quarterly each year.
