ORLANDO MAGIC SIGN FREE AGENT D.J. WILSON

The Orlando Magic have signed free agent forward D.J. Wilson, President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman announced today.

Orlando’s roster now stands at 21 players (listed below). Training camp begins on Tuesday, October 3 at the AdventHealth Training Center.

Wilson (6’10”, 230, 2/19/96) played in five games (four starts) last season with Oklahoma City of the NBA G League, averaging 19.4 ppg., 8.6 rpg., 4.0 apg. and 1.40 blkpg. in 35.8 minpg.

Originally selected in the first round (17th overall) of the 2017 NBA Draft by Milwaukee, Wilson has played in 146 career NBA regular season games (six starts) with Milwaukee, Houston and Toronto, averaging 4.4 ppg. and 3.1 rpg. in 12.3 minpg. He has also appeared in 44 career NBA G League games (38 starts) with Wisconsin and Oklahoma City, averaging 17.9 ppg., 8.4 rpg., 3.0 apg. and 1.11 blkpg. in 30.1 minpg.

Wilson played in 69 career games (36 starts) during three seasons (2014-17) at the University of Michigan, averaging 7.1 ppg., 3.3 rpg. and 1.01 blkpg. in 19.4 minpg., while shooting .525 (192-366) from the field. He helped the Wolverines win the 2017 Big Ten Tournament championship and advance to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.

Wilson will wear #23 with the Orlando Magic.

LIGHTNING GOALTENDER ANDREI VASILEVSKIY UNDERGOES SUCCESSFUL SURGICAL PROCEDURE

TAMPA BAY – Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy underwent a successful microdiscectomy this morning to address a lumbar disc herniation, vice president and general manager Julien BriseBois announced today.

Vasilevskiy is expected to miss approximately the first two months of the regular season.

XFL AND USFL ANNOUNCE INTENT TO MERGE

UM Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Amy Deem has appointed Jeremy Wilk as the new distance coach for the Hurricanes.

Wilk comes from Northwood University in Midland, Michigan. He joined the Timberwolves staff in September 2016 and was named the Head Cross Country/Track and Field Coach in August of 2021. He is a graduate of Grand Valley State University where he earned his B.B.A. in Finance and Marketing.

His cross-country teams, distance, and middle-distance student-athletes have broken school records thirty-three times during his tenure at NU.

JACKSONVILLE (SportsTicker) – The Atlanta Gladiators shut out the Jacksonville Icemen 3-0 Friday night before 8,793 at Veterans Memorial Arena.

Joe Murdaca stopped 29 shots for the visitors. David Tendeck replaced Murdaca in the third period and made 6 saves.

The Gladiators’ Michal Mrazik (5) lit the lamp in the opening period. Sanghoon Shin (14) and Cody Sylvester (24) each added empty net goals.

Jacksonville outshot Atlanta 35 to 20. The clubs played a scoreless second stanza.

Charles Williams made 17 saves for the Icemen.

ECHL: Jacksonville 3, South Carolina 0
(SportsDay) Charles Williams stopped all 25 shots for the shutout. The Icemen gained a 1-0 advantage on Christopher Brown’s power play tally. Following a scoreless second period, they doubled the lead on Zach Jordan’s goal. Tim Theocharidis iced the game on a power play goal less than two minutes later. The Icemen open up a four-game homestand Friday and Saturday.

ECHL Recap: Jacksonville 2, Atlanta 1
JACKSONVILLE (SportsTicker) – The Jacksonville Icemen (29-15-1) returned home Friday night and defeated the Atlanta Gladiators (24-16-5-1) 2-1 before 6,971 at Veterans Memorial Arena.

The Icemen were coming off a 2-1 loss Wednesday at Florida that ended a five-game winning streak.

Christopher Brown (18) scored the winning goal in the third period.

The visitors took a 1-0 lead on Mike Pelech’s eighth goal of the season. Zach Jordan evened things up late in the second. It was his 14th goal of the season.

Joe Murdaca made 27 saves in goal for the visitors. Olof Lindbom stopped 28 shots for the Icemen.

(SportsDay) The New York Rangers and Hartford Wolf Pack announced that the Rangers have reassigned goaltender Olof Lindbom to the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack from the ECHL’s Jacksonville Icemen.

Lindbom, 22, has appeared in 16 games with the Icemen during his rookie North American professional season. He’s posted a record of 11-5-0 and collected one shutout during his ECHL debut season.

Selected in the second round, 39th overall, of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, Lindbom spent the 2021-22 season in his native Sweden playing for Kristianstads IK of the HockeyAllsvenskan. He posted a record of 10-15-0 in 27 appearances.

Moeller: Talk this Spring will be What the Jaguars Can Do for an Encore

As far as the Jaguars’ 27-20 loss to the Chiefs in the divisional playoffs, the proverbial dust has settled, and the smoke has cleared.

The Jaguars are quickly becoming an afterthought with the thought of two excellent championship game matchups on the horizon this weekend. Pat Mahomes’ ankle and Joe Burrow’s bravado have further tucked the Jags under the canvas.

They shouldn’t be. But they will be back in the mainstream after the Super Bowl. They have earned that stance.

There’s plenty of chatter about Trevor Lawrence being in some future AFC championship game meetings with either Mahomes or Burrow.
