This week, our Summer Feature offers a glimpse into the sometimes intimate world of Jewish life. Each of the first-person testimonies provides an insight into the diversity of contemporary Jewish experiences and identities. These appear in turn under the sign of strangeness, a shift, duality, disarray, incomprehension or doubt. Perhaps it is Ivan Segré’s reflection that best captures the impression that emanates from the whole, as he sees the experience of Jewish identity irremediably divided between the inescapability of genealogical inscription and the singularity of subjective affirmation.

With writings by Ruben Honigmann, Yossef, Judith Lyon-Caen, Judith Offenberg, Ivan Segré, Gabriel Abensour and Frédéric Brenner.

"Torn between the nostalgia of a past power and the hope of regaining their greatness through political Europe, the great nations are also invaded by fear."

What does it mean for a nation to exist? Taking as his starting point the position of Milan Kundera – who died exactly a year ago – and the movement of cultural resistance to the dissolution of Soviet totalitarianism, Danny Trom questions the difference between nationalist dreams of power and the irreducible claim to a national (and European) spirit. Is there not something at stake here for the future of Israel?

Dual-stance article by Bruno Karsenti & Danny Trom on "Jews in the voting booth: how to loosen the noose"
"In excluding the RN and LFI, all that’s left is a center that mistreats the working classes and polarizes society by also taking Jews hostage."

Without changing its ideological matrix, the far right has turned suspicion into strength – the ability to assume what it does and control what it says – aided and abetted by opponents who, rather than assuming their political responsibility, take refuge in childish posturing: “we didn’t know…”.
Julia Christ examines the deleterious effects of this discrepancy between what is known, and what does not want to be known.

The new K. is out.

To dispel the illusion that the RN has become the defender of the Jews, and that the latter are therefore rallying for it in large numbers, Elie Petit interviewed Johan Weisz and Jonathan Hayoun on the evolution of its discourse and strategy concerning the Jews.

Some people claim that the French far-right party Rassemblement National (RN) is no longer antisemitic, and that the vast majority of Jews would vote for Bardella. To discuss these two dubious assertions, we spoke to film director and essayist Jonathan Hayoun-- notably the author, with Judith Cohen-...

"Of Campus Protests and Virtuous Antisemitism" by Eva Ilouz

On what cultural soil is the radical condemnation of Israel based?
Ilouz sheds light on the old trope that feeds militant passion, and allows it to clear its conscience: the idea that Jews represent a danger to humanity.
