October 3rd is a storied day in Military History.

Most notably, it is the first day of a two day firefight in the Bakhara Market during Operation Gothic Serpent. Most know this as "Blackhawk Down" , and this battle occurred from Oct 3 to Oct 4th, 1993. 18 men were killed, and two men posthumously received the Congressional Medal of Honor.

On the evening of October 3rd, 2009 a massive contingent of Taliban-aligned fighters overwhelmed and overran Combat Outpost Keating in Nuristan, Afghanistan. Eight men were killed in the fighting, and two received the Congressional Medal of Honor.

On Oct 3rd, 2012, in the early lightless morning, the majority of B Company 1-64 awaited pickup from the CH-47 helicopters that would deliver them into the middle of their enemy's stronghold, an area south of Masum Ghar and the Bazaar known to us as Nejat. We sat on the edge of this HLZ joking, smoking, and taking pictures. But we knew we were about to get into it. We knew we were going to take casualties. 48 hours later our platoon would be in absolute disarray. But when I think of October 3rd, I think of the men on the HLZ. Or I think of the waking dawn as we cleared house to house, desperately trying to achieve our tactical goals before our enemy woke up. I think of SSG Dennison and SGT Evans smashing walls with Hooley tools so we could stay off of roads. I think of the dozens of blasts from destroying IEDs. I think of being engaged by a shooter 10 feet away. I think of linear rock formations. I think of mistakes made by leaders, cowardice of those same leaders, and the bravery of broken men that made the mission happen. I think of my best friend reaching his limit and breaking down in a grape row after we cleared it the 3rd time that night because of the ineptitude of the aforementioned leaders. And finally i think of the moment I finally got to sleep, for 2 hours before my guard shift, in an afghan compound on the edge of a village, waiting with certainty for a gr***de to be tossed over the edge while I slept. At that moment I thought October 3rd had been a tough day.

Little did I know what October 4th had in store for me.

One of our greatest regrets of the podcast was not being able to meet all of our guests in person.

Here's Luke, sharing a beer with season 3 guest and former Royal Marine Commando Kieran Rafferty in the grand ole United Kingdom.
