Andy Cowan is back with 'Undercover,' a new album of covers. There's quite a mix, from Screaming Jay Hawkins to The Beach Boys, from Randy Newman to Leon Russell. This is a very chilled piece of work.

Aretha Franklin was riding high with 'Respect' at #1 when she released 'Baby I Love You' in July 1967. Just a few days after its release it too entered the charts beginning a 13 week stay.

Following her move to Atlantic '67 was a good year for Aretha.

'I never loved a man (the way I love you)' ( &B, #9 pop) b/w 'Do right woman-Do right man' ( #37 R&B)
'Respect' ( #1 R&B, #1 pop)
'Baby I love you' ( #1 R&B, #4 pop)
'(You make me feel like) a natural woman' ( #2 R&B, #8 pop)
'Chain of fools' ( #1 R&B, #2 pop)

Her first hit the following year was the double-sided 'Since you've been gone' ( #1 R&B, #5 pop) b/w 'Ain't no way' ( #9 R&B, #16 pop).

What a run.

By early 1956 Don Mooring had finished his time with the US Army. He headed down to Lake Charles and backed by the Yellow Jackets recorded his one and only performance of 'Love Me Mary Ann'. Eddie Shuler coupled it with Popeye 'Harold Bee' Broussard's 'Baby, Walk the Line' as Goldband G-1036. Curiously, most Goldband discographies list it as unissued although copies were obviously pressed as it is relatively easy to come by second hand.

Timmy Shaw was born Jake Hammonds Jr. in Detroit in 1938. He recorded for Reel and Jamie in the early 60s before landing at Wand in 1963. His first effort was 'Gonna Send You Back to Georgia' b/w 'I'm a Lonely Guy' released in December. Cash Box liked it, saying...

"Here's a newcomer with a bright wax future. He's Timmy Shaw and his initial Wand effort is a rockin' item on which he tells the gal he's gonna send her back to Georgia-a city slick. Solid vocal assist from the Sternphones on this funky-blueser with a 'Bo-Diddley'-like beat."

Cleveland Crochet was a Louisiana born fiddle player, band leader and the founder of the Hill Billy Ramblers. His career was remarkable for the fact that his October 1960 Goldband release 'Sugar Bee' b/w 'Drunkards Dream' was the first Cajun record to break into the US national charts, reaching #80 on the Billboard Hottest 100 during 1961.

My first guest this week is a man who you would probably know quite well. Dean Edgecombe has pretty much become a Canberra institution since moving here in the late 90s. His band, Dean Edgecombe and the Seventh Sons, has a new album, The Midnight End of Town.

In 1957 Bobby 'Blue' Bland found the charts for the first time with 'Farther up the road' (Duke 170) which spent a couple of weeks at #1. He was far from an overnight success. By that stage he'd been recording for Duke for five years and prior to that for both Modern and Chess.

Wyona Carr was from Cleveland, Ohio. As Sister Wynona Carr she recorded gospel music, albeit with a heavy blues influence. She left religious music for R&B in 1956, recording simply as Wynona Carr. 'Til the well runs dry' was the first of these. Billboard liked it,

"Miss Carr knocks out an inspired sw***er, with some ildly philosophical overtones. A solid job that rates action."

Dean Edgecombe is a local legend. Dean Edgecombe & the Seventh Sons album, 'The Midnight End of Town' is out; thirteen tracks including two recorded live earlier in the year. Very smooth, it's an album that will pefectly accompany that late night more glass of red that you have after the guests have left. And if the good Lord's willing and the creek don't rise, Dean will join me on the show next week.

Joe Tex first recorded for King in 1955 but it wasn't until 1964 when he was with Dial that he started to make a splash. Four amongst more than 30 hits over the next ten years, all but two of these crossed over to the pop chart. 'Papa Was Too' reached #15 ( #44 pop) in early 1967.

Recorded on December 1 1949, the Robins 'If It's So Baby' entered the charts on January 27 1950. It was the first of their three hits and peaked at #10. As the advertisment suggests it was actually the B-side; the A-side did nothing.

The Cash Box reviewed the record as their 'Award Of The Week' on December 31, 1949. They liked The Robins. A lot.

"A brand new quartet that zooms right into the limelight with their very first disk, reminiscent of some of the great combos already on the market, and click with 'If I Didn't Love You So'. The four boys call themselves, 'The Robins'. They're going to be easy on the ears in location after location. They simply sing their hearts out on this first platter and do so wonderful a job that it will simply wear itself out in any location in jig time. The grand harmony and beautiful balance of this new group, as well as their gorgeous voices, are sure to please juke box listeners everywhere. On the flip, 'If It's So, Baby', the boys are just as good as they are on the topside of this platter. This is wax that starts off a new combo for the New Year and will also start many juke boxes 'round the land doing terrific business with this very first disk they've cut. Just listen in to 'The Robins'--they’re terrific juke box money-makers on this first hunk of wax they've ever produced."

In case you were wondering, 'jig time' is an informal expression meaning very rapidly.

Marie Adams 'In Memory' was subtitled 'A Tribute to Johnny Ace.' Johnny Ace was a somewhat tragic figure who had a string of top five hits in the early 50s, including three . He died aged just 25 on Christmas Day, 1954. From a self-inflicted gunshot wound, which is code for losing a round of Russian Roulette.

Dustin Arbuckle is a harmonica blowing blues singer who has been playing around the traps for a couple of decades. When teamed up with guitar player Brandon Hudspeth and a rhythm section of Caleb Drummond and Kendall Newby you have Dustin Arbuckle and the Damnations. Their last album was recorded live at the Shamrock Lounge in their home town of Wichita, Kansas and includes 'Across the Desert' which appeared on the 2020 album, 'My Getaway'. The astute listener might note some similarity to the Red Devils 'Goin' to the Church'.

Lee Baker Jr. used the stage name Guitar Jr. until he moved to Chicago in 1960. Goldband released 'The Crawl' in October 1958. Eddie Shuler didn't like it,

"Well, the strangest thing that I find out about this music business is that the songs that you feel like not worth anything later on turn out to be the most valuable thing you've got. And you can't understand at the time you don't put out the record. You see my God that, for an illustration I had this thing by Guitar Junior called ‘The crawl’. Well, I didn't like to crawl all that much. I thought it was a pathetic piece of music, you know, and come to find out, it's the best thing I got".

Also from August 1965, it might look innocuous but...

Rebel was a J.D. Miller label. It quickly became Reb Rebel after this Billboard ad was published as there was already a bluegrass label named Rebel based in Virginia. Reb Rebel record labels featured two Confederate flags; the catalogue included some titles that were at best dubious and many that were out and out racist.

Sadly, these were big sellers and on the back of that a compilation LP was released in 1970, 'For Segregationists Only'. The cover proclaimed that the album was "Subtle, rib-tickling satire concerning the problems of integration and various political themes..." but for the avoidance of any doubt the liner notes explicitly spelled out the intended market:

"For those who take a conservative position on integration, this 'great society' program, the controversial war in Vietnam, and the numerous so-called 'Civil Rights' organisations, this record is a must!"

In a 1979 interview Miller attempted to justify Reb Rebel using a combination of 'look over there' and 'some of my best friends are black' arguments. However, I don't believe Miller was a racist. At his core he was a businessman, perhaps one with a questionalbe code of business eithics.

Drummer Willie Nix (born Nicks) recorded 'Just Can't Stay' in Chicago in October 1953, in front of a band that included Snooky Pryor on harp, Sunnyland Slim on piano, and Eddie Taylor on guitar. Nix didn't play drums on the record, leaving those duties to Alfred Wallace. This was his last recording session and Just Can't Stay was absolutely the pick of the four recorded that day.

You will notice a more than passing resemblance to The Red Devils 'Goin' to the Church' (credited to Lester Butler), which extends to Butler's harp lines and Paul Size's guitar noodlings in the background.
