SAINT ISIDORE-PATRON OF FARMERS
Feast Day : May 15
ST. ISIDORE, PATRON OF FARMERS, was born in Madrid, Spain of a poor family at the end of the 12th century. From an early age he was employed as a laborer on a farm outside the city. He married a lovely girl, but after the early death of their son they agreed to live in continence.
ISIDORE went to church every morning, prayed while working in the fields, and spent the holidays visiting the churches of Madrid. One time, his fellow workers complained thqt his religious practices caused him to be late at work. To test the truth of this accusation, his master hid himself ti watch. He noticed that Isidore did actually arrive late, but he also saw several angels assisting him.
ISIDORE's generousity to the poor was so great that he often reserved for himself only the scraps they left. One winter day, while carrying a sack of corn to be ground, he saw a number of birds on the bare branches of a tree. He opened the sack and poured out half of its contents for them.When he reached the destination, the sack was still full and it produced double for the usual amount of flour.
ISIDORE died in 1130 and since that time many miracles were attributed to him. His wife, who survived him for several years, is venerated in Spain as Santa Maria de la Cabeza.

WHEN, owing to the current media frenzy against priests and bishops accused of improper and even criminal behavior, many are inclined to cringe at the sight of the Roman Collar, just remember this:

If you are a practicing Catholic, we will remember that we saw this collar on the day our children were baptized and confirmed.

This was the collar at the other side of the Confessional when, burdened by sin, we wanted sacramental assurance of God's forgiveness; this is the Roman collar that the Church's qualified witness wore on the day we swore fidelity to our spouse, and this sight should give you some comfort (in fact, much solace) when, at death's door, we are weighed down by infirmity or old age.

It is this collar that brought us the balm of consolation when we lost a loved one. NOT THAT WE OWE OUR PRIESTS ANYTHING.

The point rather is that WE ALL have a stake in THEIR Holiness (or the lack of it). On the day each of them were ordained, we cheered them.

Do not join the mob that jeers now. Instead, pray for them. Warn them when they do wrong. Counsel them when they go astray. Keep them company and assure them they are not alone, for greater than any temptation of the flesh is the test of loneliness and that feeling that comes to priests that they are not cared for.

After all, they are human too, and they take comfort from the thought that we care for them -- enough to hold them up when they are weak, reproach them when they are in error, but ever assuring them that we do not write them off!

GOD BLESS OUR PRIESTS!!!
